Does X Box Play All Region?

I have one PAL disc so it doesn't matter much if it can or cannot play PAL but I was wondering if this plays all dvd regions?

Or do I need to either hack it or place a whole new chip in there?

Or do I place a Britney Spears DVD in there (sister's) till it is prepared to do anything I request?

No, I don't think it does. Cause I have an X-BOX and a PAL disc and if I remember correctly, it didn't work.
For some reason, the pal version of Cannibal Holocaust I have doesn't work on anything but my xbox.

But it doesn't play a couple of region 3 movies I have. So I guess not.

PAL-to-NTSC conversion - Yes.

Region free - No.

The makers of the Action Pro Replay (or whatever that cartridge is that lets you enter cheat codes into games) were supposed to release one for the Xbox that allows region selection. No sign of it yet and it's been delayed a lot.

The mod chips do allow for changing regions though.

DVD Region X is a disc that allows you to change regions without messing your hardware.

I've pre-ordered it, but the damn thing keeps changing release dates. Now it's supposed to be out mid-March.

I hope it does, because I have my share of Region 1 discs.

The day that comes out is the day I buy an X-Box.
Also heard (and you may already know this), the X-Box can't play DVDs unless you buy the little DVD player kit, which is essentially a remote with an IR plug that goes into a controller port. Is that true?
Yes, it will not play dvds without the remote and IR sensor.

Acording to amazon.co.uk the Xbox DVD Region X comes out on 3/7/02 or 7/2/02 for you folks overseas.

Watching my PAL Drive special edition dvd on the xbox as we speak. Unlike my multi region dvd player there is no squeezing of anamorphic pal discs. Once the dvd region x comes out I'll be able to watch all my pal discs in their proper format. This is so cool. Too bad the xbox won't output films in progressive scan. Not that I have a widescreen tv to take advantage of it anyway.

Allow a simple person to clarify:

If I buy an XBox from my local Best Buy, and get the DVD Remote and IR connection, plus get this Region X CD, do I then have all that I need to play any region/any format (PAL or NTSC) DVDs on my US Television?
Yes.

The only problem so far is that DVD region X is not yet released.

Once it is, you'll be able to do exactly that.

To make things a little more confusing for you, if you already have a PS2 you may be able to do this. There's already a version of Region X out for this format in Europe. If there's a US version out there, you're set to go.

Does the PS2 have the PAL-to-NTSC converter built-in as well? I've already got a PS2, but I'm selling my Genesis, Saturn, and PS1, and with that $$, we're buying an XBox.

If your TV is PAL/NTSC compatible (most decent large models are), you should be fine. Better check it out before buying anyway.

Good for you, boyo!

Shit! Region X for the XBox is no longer listed on Amazon.co.uk, and the few other sites I've checked, the release date is now "CANCELLED". What the hell happened? It was supposed to be released next Friday (June 13th). ARGH! Anyone know what the deal is?

This is a dark dark day....

PS2, on the other hand, doesn't even play DVD-Rs.

what if the x box is connected to a computer? would region still be an issue or is region determined by the dvd player and not the output reciever?
It does matter and having it connected to your computer has no effect on whether DVDs will play (regardless of region) on your XBOX. To watch DVDs on the XBOX, you have to have the remote and IR sensor add-on (runs about $30.) I had my XBOX plugged up to my computer until recently, but DVD Region X seems to be the only solution for those of us who have DVDs from more than one region who would like to be able to watch them on our XBOXs.

When I stated earlier that the American XBOX would not read PAL discs I was somewhat wrong. I had tested one PAL disc in my XBOX and it didn't work. But when I bought Drive: Special Edition from the UK as well, it did work on my XBOX when it wouldn't load on my DVD player.

Yeah, I saw this. I ran a search on Google and here's what I found.. These 2 sites say it is available and link to the page at Amazon.co.uk, saying the file is missing:

http://www.priceclash.co.uk/xbox-dvd-region-x

http://www.xboxregionx.co.uk/

I would keep an eye on that second link though, as it seems to be the official site for the tool and maybe they will eventually let us know what is going on.
Looks like that second link is dead. And so are my hopes of watching my R1 disks on my Xbox.

Deep down, I always feared this would happen, with the release date getting pushed back all the time...

The link opens just fine.

It was dead the other day, but the link on it to Amazon.co.uk is dead. When you click to it, it says something to the effect of "The link you requested is not found".
It's official, Region X for the Xbox is dead.

I sent an e-mail to the company that was developing it and here's their reply:

Unfortunately, at the moment there are no plans to release a DVD Region X for XBox. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.

Kind Regards

Well, that's a punch to the pants. Damn. I guess I'll have to resume my search for a region-free DVD player.

You can buy a nice one for about $200+

In the end, if you are a region-free nut, you are better off buying a region-free player.

See, I'm not a region-free nut, but there are a few DVDs I'd love to own that are only available outside of Region 1 (Ford Fairlane, for example). And if I could find something that would have opened the XBox to being Region Free, that would have worked for me. I don't want to replace my DVD player just for something that I would only buy a couple of DVDs for.

Toshiba SD 3900 is $99. It does region free out of the box via remote and can do perfect PAL 16x9 to NTSC 4:3 conversion. As it's a Toshiba, I have to believe that its build-quality and warranty will be better than a budget player only company.

That particular model didn't get a very good review over at Audio Review.

Get this model from Best Buy (MINTEK 1600) and then go here ( http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/ ) to download the program you burn onto a cd, play it in your DVD and viola!

You now have a region free, Pal to NTSC covertering DVD player...
2 pages worth of DVD nerds at www.dvdtalk.com seem to think that the SD-3900 is a solid player.

Actually, I just put a new DVD-Rom in my PC, and found the firmware to make it Region-Free, and then downloaded a piece of software to allow my DVD player software to bypass the region setting. A co-worker of mine is from Hong Kong, so I'm going to see if she'll bring in a couple of those Region movies and see if it works. Total cost: $39.99 plus tax.
