Recommend a 32"-36" (non-HD)TV

We're selling our 27 in WEGA to the in-laws (and not even ripping them off - damnit!), so it's time to upgrade. I'm not going to make the leap to HDTV or even HDTV ready at this point. "Just wouldn't be prudent at this juncture."

I'm looking for a sub-$900 dollar (preferably in the $500-$750 range) 36 incher that, put simply, doesn't suck. I'm not married to flatscreen either if it means I can get a bigger tube. My list of must-haves is short:

1. Component and S-Video inputs in addition to standard RCA inputs.
2. Quality of construction, good brand reputation. I want this sucker to last.
3. Ideally 36", but if I can get more of these features/better quality for the price range in a 32", I might go that way.

That's about it. After a while, I wasn't impressed with my low-end WEGA. The horizontal separation produced by the Trinitron kinda bugged me. The smoothness/softness (without sacrificing sharpness) of some of the non-flat screen monitors actually looks better to my eyes. (side note - I love Trinitrons for computer monitors, but at TV resolutions, they just don't like quite right to me.) Also, the WEGA took forever to warm up and produce an image when first turning it on. When viewing black images, often some faint blue diagnal lines could be seen as well. That ALWAYS bothered me. So I basically am ruling out another WEGA or any other flatscreen that has these issues.

I've got a little 19 in. Toshiba in the bedroom that's almost 15 years old and works like a charm. Are they still that good? I've read some favorable reviews, but I was wondering if anyone here can share their recent experiences with Toshiba or Panasonic? I know RCA is the kiss of death - has Zenith improved, or do they still vomit up Abe Vigoda?**

Any help or opinions will garner muchas gracias.

I just realized that many of the phrases in this post sound filthy when taken out of context. YES.

**"vomit up Abe Vigoda" is stolen from another chewer whose name I've forgotten. You deserve your props for that nugget, oh nameless one!

Check out the Toshiba 32AF42 flat-screen. I looked at this model extensively but ended up having to settle for the 27" version(which I am SUPER fucking pleased with, btw).

Both 27" & 32"-sized Toshibas are the number 1 picks on Consumer Reports in their size respective categories and the picture is fantastic. Repair history for Toshiba kicks ass, and mines got component in, at least 2 S-Video jacks and standard RCA connectors.

I definitely recommend you search the web high and low for consumer reviews, and then march into Best Buy or some other place with hundreds of tvs and see for yourself, but this particular Toshiba series is great.

In case you don't have a CR login, here's the top 5 Consumer Reports rated models for last year fwiw:

Toshiba 32AF42 $750.00
JVC AV-32F713 $800.00
Sony KV-32FV300 $1,200.00
JVC AV-32D203 $550.00
Zenith C32A26 $450.00

I also have the Toshiba 27AF42, Big Black. I recommend it highly, and I went from a 27" Magnavox with amazing simulated surround sound that I really liked. I spent a few days doing a side-by-side comparison between the 27" Toshiba and Sony flatscreens, and I went with the Toshiba based on overall picture quality and spatial sound. I was also on a budget, so the Toshiba made more sense than paying an extra $100-200 for the Sony name.

Do you run yours through a home theater system? That will be my next addition I hope.

If you want to go on the cheap get the mid-level Toshiba standard tubed 36incher.

<a href="http://www.toshiba.com/tacp/tv/current/36A42.html" target="_blank">Toshiba 36A42</a>

You can get it at <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11159861&m=1&cat=24&scat=26" target="_blank">Best Buy</a> for $699 or if you shop locally it probably could be had for $599 to $650.

Take the left over money and buy your wife something nice. Like a stack of DVD's.

Seems like my Toshiba instincts are on the mark. I'm off to Best Buy/Conn's/Fry's later this week to compare images and prices.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah, I went the cheap route and picked up a very simple Sony set for about $300. I'm pretty clueless about this stuff and again, just went to Consumer Reports and picked up their #1 set, which I think also happened to be the cheapest.

It's the Sony HT-DDW740, and I'm really happy with it. Sounds fucking great, especially in DTS, but the trade-off for the price is that it's not going to be blowing the toupees off any guests' skulls, and is a relatively low-power unit.

Here's their top 5 from last year:

1.) Sony HT-DDW740 - $300
2.) Pioneer HTD-510DV - $400
3.) Panasonic SC-HT75 - $400
4.) Yamaha YHT-500 - $600
5.) Yamaha YHT-300 - $400

Thanks for the info. I'm also kinda clueless about home theater systems, and I don't have thousands of dollars to set up a THX quality system. I'll probably get one like those you listed. I live in an apartment anyway. Neighbors don't like it when you blow the walls out with your stereo.

$300-$600 for a 32"-36" TV? W have to pay $999 minimum over here for a 32" set.

If you have a little more money to spare, you'd probably be better off buying the receiver and speakers seperately. Just like in computers, intergration is not the ideal way to go. I'd recommend a receiver in the $200-300 range (some good brands are Yamaha, Onkyo & Denon), along with a speaker package like the Onkyo SKSHT500. I've seen it at Circuit City and it looks like a great speaker set for the price. Later on, you can upgrade your speakers and not have to buy everything over again.
