DVD freeze

I have a reoccurring problem with DVDs locking up on my DVD player. I kep my DVDs pristine, so it is not a dust problem.

Certain discs have always given me trouble (and the problems are inconsistent), but It is at the point now where I can not play ANY DVD without it locking up somewhere. My question is, is this problem going to happen on all low end ($100-$150) players, or can I just by another player in the same price range and solev the problem.

My player is a samsung DVM-90 and about 2 years old.

I read about a similar problem a few years ago that was happening with multi-layer discs (they're a different color - gold maybe) but I think that should have been resolved when you bought your player. If that is the issue here, though, you should be fine buying another player in the same price range.

How much of the movies can you watch before you get to this problem? Is it always at the same point in the movie.

On some discs it happens at approximately the same place every time. There are a half dozen or so that I can ALWAYS expect a problem with and have been a problem since day one, and the other DVDs in my collection will frreze up completely randomly...diffrent places, different degree of severity, sometimes not at all. Discs that I have played a dozen times with no prob will sudenly act up and then never have a probelm again but, as i said, inthe last week or two it seems like every disc has major problems, freezing to the point where I have to eject and re-insert the disc and sometimes even that does not help.

I don't know anybody else who has had so many problems with so many DVDs and, as I said, I keep my discs in good condition. All I want is to watch the terminator without having to reload my DVD, is that so much to ask?!? is this an old DVD player problem, a defective player problem, or jsut the unavoidable result of spending less than $200 on a player?

Well my dvd player was only about $250, and that was 4-5 years ago. I have only had a few problems with discs not playing, and they've always been from Blockbuster. So I don't think it's an issue of "you didn't spend enough". Howver, the problem I described above would only describe some of the symptoms you're having. It could either be that you have more than one problem, or that my scenario doens't apply at all. Maybe someone else will be of more help.

It definitely sounds like your player is the problem. If you have another player available to you(say a friend) you could check some of the discs. Anyway, you can actually get a pretty good player in the $100-$150 range. 5-disc, progressive scan DVD players fall into that range, but they certainly are't of the high end variety. I would say go ahead and try a new player if your discs turn out to be fine.

I have had a similar problem with my Sony DAVC-770 dvd player. Damn thing won't play my Miyazaki discs(except Mononoke Hime). Fucker plays all my other movies fine, but can't go three minutes without getting all frozen and jittery on those discs. And their in perfect condition, hell I even exchanged them and the same thing happened at the same places. My other DVD player has no problems reading the discs, and it is a low end Samsung model from about 3 yrs ago.

Edited to add that you may also want to try and get a lense cleaner for your DVD player. it might help fix some of your problems if you haven't already tried one.

Damn, sorry to hear that. Well, I guess I should wish you luck in your hunt for a new player.

Same thing happened to me.

I think is has to do with the lazer they put in these players.

I had a Samsung model and I had the exact same problem. It seemed to happen more on DVDs with a lot of info on them but not always. I took it to the Samsung repair shop and he said it happens all the time with Samsung DVD players. New players out of the box that would freeze and skip were brought to him constantly. I bought a cheap $200 Sony and it hasn't frozen or skipped in the year I've had it. Samsung makes great TVs but I'm staying away from their DVD players from now on.

got a panasonic and it works beautifully, all the "problem" Dvds i had paly without a hitch. I will never by a Samsung anything ever again. This really was a case of a very defective product.

I don't know about not buying Samsung ANYTHING...

Their DVD players apparently are not up to snuff, but I've heard good things about their TVs, and the RAM in your computer could very well be Samsung (generally is if Dell or HP made it).

Samsung TVs are the shit.
My parents have one.

Just go to Best Buy and look at their High Defs, you'll usually see that the Samsung has a lot better picture.

I'm still a Sony man, but Samsung has piked my interest with their new front Projection model. Mmmm.
