Recommended Region Free DVD Player?

Thread Starter
I am looking to purchase a region free DVD player. I see the thread concerning WHERE to buy them but was wondering which make and model people preffered.

I would like to continue using my fiber optic audio connection if possible. Also, I would prefer not to spend $600 for the unit.

I see numerous region free players for under $250. Are any of those units good enough to be a primary DVD player?

I currently have a nice Panasonic DVD player (not progressive scan), a JBL home theater setup and a Toshiba 55" TV (not HDTV).

I also have a PS/2 that I have heard can be modified to be code free with the Game Shark add-on. Is this sufficient or a crappy alternative?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Jaton PSD7611K Progressive Scan DVD Player

Malata N996 / DVP520

If I am right those puppies are some of the best and will fit right in with your home theater set up.

your PS2 will not convert a PAL signal, which many European discs are and the above pro-scan players will handle properly. i'd go with one of those models.

Nothing else I can add, except:

DO NOT EVER GET A DINGTIAN.

And I should add that the Daewoo fucked me over big time. But I did get a full refund, so it all worked out.

Thanks for the info.

I haven't found a whole lot of info on the Jaton but what I have found is very positive.

The Malata DVP520 seemed to get a little bit of negative feedback compared to the N996 that it replaced but also seems to get the most recommendations for what I need.

I'll compare a bit more and make a decision. Thanks again for the help!

I heard someone (I think it was DJ Dylan) mention that the Gameshark makes PS2 region-free. I doubt it's true, but does anyone know for sure? That would be great.....

Some more info from a website I have learned to trust. Pretty good little review. Hope this helps a little more.

Today, on TechTV's Call For Help at 5:00pm, they will be talking about multiregion DVD players and more than likely recommending a few players. So, if you can stand Chris Pirillo's annoying nasally voice, then you may have a few more suggestions.

Here's a link detailing more info:

Any region free player with the Mediamatics Chipset is your best bet for PAL -> NTSC conversion.

Three I know of that are the best:

JVC 5500
Malata N996
Laton P5D7611k

All cost rougly $230 - $300

It does make it region-free, but as the double-d explained earlier, the actual PS2 would still be NTSC and hence incompatible with PAL discs, which most R2 discs are.

Well it is basically down to the three players most everyone has mentioned:

JVC S500
Malata N996/DVP520
Jaton P5D7611k

Anyone feel strongly about one of these players over the others or are all three the exact same quality? Which player do you use to watch Region 1-6 DVDs?

At this point I am saving for one of them but it comes down for me for the Jaton and JVC. And if the Jaton has no problem fitting in with my home theater set up I will defintely go Jaton.
