DVD On The PS2 For Dummies

OK, since my brother is getting a PS2 for Christmas we'll forget about the combo thing. I have a couple of questions related to DVD on the PS2:

1. How good is the PS2 as a DVD player?

2. Is there any way for it to play multi-region?

Please give as much info as possible. Thanks!

Adequate - depends on what TV and leads you plan to use. The quality would make DVD snobs vomit, but for yer average mainstream viewer, they probably wouldn't notice. Get a remote as well, because navigating a DVD menu with the joypad is horrible.

Yep - buy the Region X tool from Datel. Plug it in the memory card slot and your PS2 is All Region.

It's like getting an alarm clock with a radio in it. You wouldn't use it as your hi-fi if you had the choice, but at a push it does the job.

It was probably just my TV, but I got some edgy outlines of characters/objects in the films I watched on it.

I hate using my PS2 as a DVD player, but until I rescue mine from my girlfriend's house, it has to do. The main problem I have is the fact that it doesn't read half of my discs. I had to go through 20 minutes of coaxing it to play Blue Velvet the other night, only to give up and play Amelie instead. I finally ended up watching through my computer on my TV. Sadly, that was easier.

Will the region X tool mess anything up in the long run? Are there any mishaps that can occur because of it's use?

Not at all. The region X tool is completely safe. It operates just like a Gameshark. I use one for my mod-chip, no problems as of yet.

Do you have to have a mod-chip to use Region X?

(Sorry, this is all new to me)

No. It's a CD and a plug-in that goes in the memory card slot. But, like the GameShark (or Action Replay as it's known in Britain) it can be used in place of a mod chip by interrupting the PS2's boot sequence, allowing you to boot from an original disc, then swap it for a pirate game.

This is why Sony rape Datel with lawyers on a regular basis.
