Home Cinema Help

Thread Starter
I recently bought a Yamaha VS-10 Home Cinema setup. I've installed it all and stuff, but when I watch movies, every so often, the sound cuts out for a second and then returns. Anyone know if my system is faulty, or have I got something wrong somewhere? I'm still a novice, home cinema wise.

What happens to the picture when is does this? Does it also freeze?

Picture is fine. Just the sound that does it.

Check and make sure all your plugs are secure. The other day I hooked up my XBOX to my PC and suddenly my sound was fishy.

It turned out to be a loose right surround channel cord that was running to my subwoofer. It had come loose when I was moving things around and was the sound was going in and out.

Maybe the DVD is just changing layers for the sound.

That's what I was thinking, but if the picture doesn't pause then that can't be it...they never change just an audio layer {not that there IS such a thing}...

Is it multiple discs, Fett? Like everything you watch, even cable? Or a particular disc?

It's on every disc I watch. I don't have my cable hooked up there though. It also happens to early and too frequently to be the layer change.

Like Mol said, check the cables and make sure everything is hooked up right. If that's cool, then I would think about calling the company or checking with others that have the same system {CNET or other forums would be good}.

My last resort would be to take it back and get a replacement, but that might be a good idea no matter what if it's a recent purchase.

How'd you hook up the XBox to the PC?

I'm curious about that.

I have an ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder video card installed in my PC. It came with a bunch of cables. One of the cables I can run from the back of the video card and on the other end are the red, yellow and white RCA inputs. Then I have another connecter running from my video card to an alternate input on my sound card.

Then I installed the ATI Multimedia Center and opened the TV tuner and switched to the composite channel.

I had a friend who is more of a technie than I am help me set it up over the phone.

It worked great, once I had my sound problem fixed. Then the other day, when I would open the TV tuner, I would get sound, but no video. I checked all the cables and even reinstalled my video card and the MMC, but I am still troubleshooting the problem.

But, when it worked, it was awesome and the video quality was much better than a regular TV.

So, all you need is a video card that allows you to hook up coaxial, S-video or composite. Most sound cards have the proper input to plug the cord running from your video card into (it's the blue earphone jack.)

Fett,

Check to see if you have "Dynamic Range Compression" and if so, make sure it's off. I had it switched on and it caused what sounds like the same thing you described.

Dynamic Range Compression is good if you are going to be watching at a low volume, but if you crank the volume you'll get the audio dropouts.

Hope this helps.

Hey Fett,
Try changing your digital assignments in the menu; respectively where it asks you dolby digital on and dts on and pcm on e.t.c
A colleague of mine had a similar problem that was related to the settings in the audio menu!
