New friend, looking for a Sony DVD player that will also play CDs in the $100-$150 range.

What would you recommend?

Does it have to be Sony?
Panasonic have a couple of good players in that range.

A Panasonic or a Toshiba.

Seriously, why the emphasis on Sony?

The Sony player I have is great. I bought it years ago when the damn thing was $300, but I believe the model is down to the range your friend is aiming for. I'll check the model number tonight and get back to you.

I asked her why it had to be a Sony. Call it "brand loyalty."

She had budgetted about $250 for a dual DVD/VHS player. I talked her out of that idea.

I'm sure she can find something easily in that price range. Amazon has a Sony single disc, interlaced player for $129.

Because at low-end, Sony is the best and longest lasting.

Check this one out. MSRP is only $150 from Sony and they offer 1 cent ground shipping right now.

I'd link to Sony but their url's are too freakin' long....but you can go to www.sonystyle.com and look it up...

The Sony DVP-NS315 plays CD's, CD-Rs, CD-RWs and MP3 CD's for $130. The Sony I have has been flawless for 2 years. For $250 the DVP-NS755V also plays super audio CD's and is progressive scan. That is a pretty good deal.

I would be careful with the Toshiba players, because if I remember correctly, they have a storied past with not playing certain DVDs.

I have a Panasonic, but when I bought it in the fall of 1999, it cost me $300 and I am sure that it costs a whole lot less these days.

Thanks for the input, people. I'll give the information to her this afternoon ... and in the days to come (if there's more).

CHUD rocks, this reason among many.

I would seriously consider the Panasonic RP-32S (I think that's it). Anyway, it is available anywhere for $119.99 or less (at least not from what I've seen). In my opinion, Sony overall is coasting on their established name and are being passed in quality in many cases (namely CRT Projecion TVs). That model Panasonic is highly ranked by any consumer magazine and far above the comparable Sony model (315 something or other), which doesn't even have an optical surround output (only coax), and Panasonic is also commonly ranked higher with scratched discs.

Hope this helps.

we love the hell out of this player that resided now in our bedroom...will probably be moved to the living room once we settle on a bigger screen hdtv set. We too subscribe to brand loyalty...only because my wife is into colors/logos matching n' stuff like that.

It's a sony progressive scan player, handles cd-r/rw & dvd-r/dvd+rw, mp3 discs (which was a revelation the first time I heard them with surround sound compared to plain jane stereo on my pc), but unfortunately no video/super video cd compatability.

Cost is pretty low at $218...within your friends budget. You can't go wrong Blo...
