I am pretty self-sufficient tech-wise, but have come to a place where I am out of ideas. Anyone with Windows tech knowledge, please, throw me a line...

I run Windows 95 (I know, old...) and have recently gotten back online after being offline at home for a few months.

I attempt to download Yahoo Instant Messenger. Run into a snag. One of the .dll libraries won't open properly. A few days later, I try to download the latest Shockwave. Same exact problem.

Windows/System/kernel32.dll is the bastard file. It is present in the correct location, but when I attempt to download programs, I get a dialogue box that states roughly:

the .dll file (above) isn't loading properly, downlaod failed

Being an amateur computer-fucker-upper, I went to the file, tried to remove it and run without. In some cases, the computer can generate a file when there is not an old one. Wouldn't work. Access denied, file in use.

Apparently, the kernel32.dll file is immovable. Can't delete. Write-protected or in use. Copied it, tried to change names on the copy. Just to mess around and see what I could do.

No luck.

I need suggestions how to get around this lil fucker. I offer you an acre of land, and a mule for your help.

kernel32 is essential in actively running the 95 OS. The term kernel can be taken very literally: it's the most material and central part, or core
of any operating system including Linux, Mac, and Win. It's primary functions are as a memory manager/task balancer that makes sure the system won't crash under any single or combination of running processes. This is why you can't yank it out and replace it in Windows - it's actually keeping the system running and protects itself by being inaccessible while Win95 is in operation. Most upgrades in UNIX-based systems are essentially replacing the kernel and system libraries, and the process is fairly stream-lined(uh, sort of). Not so in Windows.

Dude. I hate to break it to you, but usually incessant kernel32 errors are going to necessitate some for of reinstall of Windows. Without an update or patch for Win95 that directly addresses the problem, it may be your only option - and since those updates require a download, which you can't currently perform due to the issue at hand...

One more thing:
This would be a really good opportunity to upgrade your Windows version to whatever newer OS your system can handle. I know Win95 can be quite reliable for some time, but Win98: Second Edition is very similar in look, feel and compatibility and far, far more reliable. Get a copy from a friend and I don't think you'll regret it in the long-run.

BB,

Thanks! I assumed that it was needed to run the system, since it was in use when I had no other programs running at all. As for updating my OS, I figured that would have to be the case. I will look into it.

Appreciate all your help!
