Defective disc or defective DVD player?

Well, I tried posting this question to the general DVD board but it got ignored, so I'm hoping someone here can answer it.

I have a Toshiba SD-1700 DVD player. It works fine with every DVD I have. Lately though at times it makes a squeaking sound sometimes when it plays, other times it doesn't. When it does squeak, it usually stops after about 10-15 minutes. Has nothing to do with the DVDs, because sometimes it will squeak, sometimes not when using the same DVD.

But my actual question is this...

I recently got the Challenge of the Superfriends (cartoon) DVD, and I've noticed that if I pause any part of the disc, it "wobbles". That is, the frozen image flickers and splits into two overlapping, flickering versions of the same image. If I advance frame by frame, out of every 5 frames, two do this. In other words, when I freeze frame it, that is frame 1. I hit pause again, advancing it to frame 2, and it's still fine. Frames 3 and 4 flicker, then back to normal for frame 5. So it's always frames 3 and 4 flickering out of every 5 frames when pausing/going frame by frame.

It doesn't seem to do this with any other DVD. I tried about a half dozen or so.

So...does it sound like an error in that particular disc, or is it likely that ALL the Challeng of the Superfriends have an encoding error? Or could it still be some problem with the DVD player that's not showing itself on other discs?

Any help would be appreciated.

A friend of mine's DVD player (yes, it's a crappy Apex) actually had a squeak/whirr sound occasionally when a disc was inserted. After investigating, I found out the tray that you place the disc on retracted into the player too fast and dislodged the DVD by enough to throw the balance/camber off, thus creating a wobble, and very often, read-errors. I didn't figure out how to fix it, but I did work around it by holding the tray with my fingers as it pulled it in, keeping reverse-pressure on it, thus slowing the drive. Probably not the best thing for the motor, but at least it spun correctly and read fine.

As for the particular DVD you mentioned, some DVD's are actually lighter (in weight) than others, and it might be moving more in the cradle than other discs.

Just some thoughts.
