Recommendations on a new TV

Well, I've finally saved up enough pennies to purchase a new television and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

Caveats:

I can probably afford about 300-400 dollars for this.
I don't have a speaker system or stereo so I need the TV to have decent sound.
I haven't decided on 16:9 or 4:3 but I'm leaning toward 4:3 due to the percentage of regular television programming to Widescreen DVDs that are viewed in the household.

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know of any 16:9 TV that can be bought with $300-$400 anyway, so that probably isn't an issue.

About eighteen months ago I was able to get a 32" Panasonic TV with fine-by-my-standards pictuer and sound for about $440. I'll dig up the model number. I've been happy with it.

Well, Costco always seems to have some weirdbeard tv's cheap... why not a 16X9? Your tv sounds good though...

I haven't seen a 16:9 TV on EARTH that goes for less than $899, and if you found one that did, the materials would be so shoddy, I'd recommend against purchasing no matter what manufacturing name was attached to it.

You can see why I need help if I don't even know that! I'm very deficient in my knowledge of electronics, due to my usual lack of funds for that area.

When I'm shopping electronics I look here for reviews:

epinions is another decent place to look, but for both sites READ THE REVIEWS. Don't judge a product by the number of stars. Lots of green, leafy types post reviews (plants).

I would say Costco is your best bet. At my office, we recently got a 32" Toshiba Flat Display TV with VCR and DVD for right around 400 bucks. Not a bad pickup, if I do say so myself.

keep saving. move the couch or chair closer to your existing tv.

I was plenty surprised to see a relatively decent sony projection tv (46 inches, wide screen, hd-compatible) on sale for $1600 the past few weeks at various outlets.

If you're going to spend money at all, buy something you'll truly be happy with a long ways down the road from now.

The same advice applies to computers as well...

I got a 24" Sony FD Trinitron as a graduation present. It costs about $380. And it has a really good picture and the sound is superb. I also has component inputs. But it isn't Hi-Def or 16:9.

Of course you could get a 27"-32" for around the same price. It just wouldn't have a flat display.

That's not true. You can still get flat screen, but it wont have all of Sony's bells and whistles on it.

If you get a tube TV, get something with at least a digital comb filter. This helps clean up the picture.
Try to get a flat screen TV.
Stick with brands like Sony and Hitachi. Panasonic isn't bad either, though their picture tends to be darker.
Unless it is a High-Def TV, you probably won't gain that much by it having component inputs. So they aren't necessary, but they are nice all the same.

Working at Circuit City has allowed me to gleam some of this information.
