DVD +R DVD -R

I want a DVD burner for my computer but have noticed both +R and -R. I then heard that one of them might be obsolete when companies choose one or the other. Is this true, and if so is there any ideas which burner will win out?

I want it for authoring, so is one better then the other for that purpose?

DVD +R. I keep hearing that it works is most DVD players. DVD -R works in something like 25% of all DVD players.

I use dvd-r's and have yet to find a dvd player that they haven't worked in. Even my extremely old player that won't read cd-r's will play the dvd-r's I burn.

I am still a bit confused on what the difference is between +R and -R. Anyone care to clarify it for me?

I'd say that if these people's helpful advice hasn't swayed you one way or the other concerning which format/burner to buy...invest in the Sony DRU-500A.

It's a dvd-r,-RW,+r,+RW burner all built in one. So you win both ways deciding on which is most compatible of the formats. It ain't cheap but no dvd burner is these days. The bundled software is said to be weak but a steal anyway you paint it.

Funny, I was really bored at work tonight and I read a great article in Smart Computing that backed up everything that I had thought about Dvd+R/R. They are almost exactly the same. They use the same technique for burning, the discs are almost identical, and so is the compatibility with set-top DVD players. The Sony writer is only the first step to the merging of these two formats. The one that is on its way out is DVD-RAM, which is mainly used for PC data anyways.
