DVD Player Suggestions: Progressive Scan AND Region-Free

I almost bought a Progressive Scan DVD player recently, decided I might as well get one that's region free as well.
Are there any good ones out there you folks reccomend? Or ones coming down the pike, since I can wait.

Here's where you want to be...

<a href="http://www.avdeals.ca/dvdplayers/jaton_psd7611k.htm" target="_blank">JATON PSD7611 Progressive Scan Multi-region Dvd Player Plays Region 1 to 6 DVDs</a>

Apparently the Malata DVD-N996s are no longer available.

Well, it doesn't necessarily have to be purchased there. But that is the unit you want to look at.

Just one Hound's opinion.

I've got the JVC S500 (not the retail version). It is region free, progressive scan and has fibre optic digital output (as well as coax). It is the bee's knees.

I hear the Malata and the Jaton are good too.

Go Jaton.

Best of the Best.

jaton is a great dvd player, but you should also check the 681p or even the dve-611

Oh yeah... The Cheap Route...

The <a href="http://www.nerd-out.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=25&sid=5d0764050ade4fc0ced172a321c 5d0e3" target="_blank">APEX 1100W</a> can still be purchased extremely cheaply and upgraded easily.

Always an alternative.

Although it should be noted that the Apex 1100W is not a progressive scan DVD player.

Also, I've heard a lot of good things about the Jaton but I've never heard anything from someone who owned one. Do some of you guys actually have a Jaton?

True. Thanks for catching that. I do not know anyone, personally, that owns either Malata or the Jaton DVD player. I do know that, damn it, I want one.

Whats the harm in buying a Region 1 and "hacking" it to play all regions if it already has Progressive Scan?

it's not as easy as buying a region free player straight out of the box.
Hmm, looks like I'll be buying the JATON PSD-7611 in June.

I'll either order it from <a href="http://www.avdeals.com/dvdplayer/jaton_psd7611k.htm" target="_blank">AVdeals</a> or <a href="http://aznfilms.com/product_info.php/cPath/14/products_id/549" target="_blank">AZN Films</a>.

Does anyone have any experience ordering from the sites above?

Thanks for resurrecting this, as I never bought the bloody thing due to buying a car...but I may soon wink

It should be noted that progressive scan is no good unless you have a TV that can read it. If your monitor isn't set up for PS, the signal will appear scrambled (much like Macrovision) on your screen. I know this from experience.

Basically, an HDTV compatible TV, correct?

From <a href="http://www.avdeals.com/DVDFAQ.HTM" target="_blank">HERE</a>:

Quote:
Progressive scan dvd players will work on any tv since you can select interlaced output. A very good and highly detailed explanation of progressive scanning can be found <a href="http://www.avdeals.com/classroom/Proscanexplained.htm" target="_blank">HERE</a>
Looking for more links...

Very good link, thanks...and it does answer my question:
"Progressive displays, such as high-performance CRT/LCD/DLP/D-iLA projectors and the new HDTV-ready TVs, can show progressive scanned images as opposed to interlaced."
Hey, I have that Jaton and it has worked great. I don't have a progressive scan TV, but I plan on having one in the future. The player can be changed to send either an interlaced or a progressive signal to the TV.

So far it has played Region 2 Pal, Region 3 NTSC, Region 1 NTSC, and mp3's burned onto a cdr. I haven't tried anything else yet. It's been fine with Episode 2 and Monster's Inc, which are two movies that have given other region free or hacked players problems. It's been a great player and I would recommend it to anyone.

Out of the box it wasn't region free, so don't freak out like I did. I just had to do a remote control mod and it's worked fine since then.

I purchased mine from HKFlix.com, but it is pretty much the same price wherever you buy it. I think HKFLix and AZN films both ship from CA, so I may take a few days depending upon where you live.

Hope that helped a little.
Cool, thanks!

Quick question(s), what exactly do you mean by a "remote control mod"?

Do you have to punch in a code, or something?
Yeah grim, something like that. I'll paste the instructions below that I recieved from the Jaton customer service rep.
----------------------------------
Jaton Multi region code free Operation

In Order to change your Jaton DVD player to Region Free

1: Power off the machine using your remote control

2: Press Clear button on remote

3: Select region # (O is for all regions)

4: Press Play

Unit will remain in the region you selected until you repeat the above to change region. Leave unit in Region 0 unless you get a “smart disk”

Should you get a smart disk simply use the above instructions and change the machine to the disks original region.
---------------------------------
I did that and haven't had any problems since. I haven't run into any of these "smart" discs, so I haven't had to contend with that.

Hope this helps.

Great! Thanks.

got a real dumb question, do you have to have an hdtv for progressive scan to work?
Well...you have to be using component video (the RGB cord) to think about it, and I haven't seen a regular TV with C-Video inputs. If you have a regular TV that does have them, theoretically, you could have progressive scan, but it won't do anything because the max resolution on a regular TV is 480 interlaced (one set of lines refreshes, then the next). DVD is at 480 progressive, so you can get progressive scan to work and make a difference on either an EDTV (480 p) or HDTV (1080 i or 720 p).
I have a regular TV with component inputs. My dvd player also has component outputs but it's not progressive (both the tv and dvd player are made by JVC). I did a comparison with s-video vs. component video and the difference was strikingly visible to me and to my wife. Otherwise I would have stayed with the cheaper s-video.

Slightly off topic, but maybe of interest.
Well, you would have to have a HD capable TV to get the true 480p progressive scan signal that the dvd player will send. I have a Sony WEGA, which isn't progressive scan, but it does have component inputs. I use these inputs and get a great image from my player. I have the player set to only send the interlaced signal to the TV, but I got the progressive player because I plan to upgrade my TV in the future.

If you have an HDTV that is also rear projection, remember to calibrate the image and you should end up with an amazing image onscreen. The RPTVs come out of the box with crappy settings, so you really should tweak them to get the best out of them.
