DVD Player Trouble/Replacement

Howdy. I hope I can get some suggestions here. My DVD player, around 3-4 years old, started this lovely habit of telling me it can't read this kind of disc when I put certain DVDs in. This leads to me opening and closing it an infinite number of times in hopes that it will finally read the disc. You can imagine how pleased this makes me.

I thought about getting it cleaned, but the guy told me it probably needed optical alignment, which would run me $90 an hour for labor. Like hell.

So, I'm in the market for a new DVD player. I don't need the latest cutting edge stuff. I want to spend about $100-$150. Can someone recommend something that should be fairly reliable?

In that price range, no one brand or model is significantly better than the others. You won't find features on one that aren't on another. Toshiba, Panasonic, JVC, and Sony are all fairly reliable and you won't have any problems finding one for $150 and under at any Best Buy or Circuit City. Stay away from Sampo, Apex, RCA, Ronco, Magnetbox, and Fuckfarmer.

And make sure the one you go with has the connectivity you need (s-video? component? composite?) to hook up to the rest of your system.

Thanks. This one was a Panasonic, so I'm a little perplexed at these problems. I may go for a Sony this time.

No problem. Panasonic typically has problems playing bootleg DVD snuff films from Asia, but you should be good to go with Sony or Toshiba.
