Will my DVD player play DVD-R's?

I have a JVC XV-S45, about a year and a half old. Will it play those wacky DVD-R bootlegs people sell on ebay? From reading several online FAQ's, I get the impression there may not be a definitive yes or no answer to this question, but maybe some of the chewers can help.

Looks like it will.

<a href="http://www.apple.com/dvd/compatibility/" target="_blank">Apple's dvd-r dvd compatibility chart</a>.

<a href="http://www.videoxb.com/compatibility.html" target="_blank">VideoXB</a>.

I found these links, and many more, from <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22JVC+XV-S45%22+%2B+dvd-r" target="_blank">here</a>.

Here are some user reviews from <a href="http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=JVC+XV-S45&Search=Search" target="_blank">dvdrhelp</a>, although the model is listed as JVC XV-S45GD.

I'm not sure if there's a difference.

Thank you much. I'm considering getting my wife a Buffy bootleg for her birthday, but I wanna be at least fairly sure that it'll play on my player first.

There's always the pc route as a last resort. Also, if at some point you decide to purchase a second dvd player, many asian discount machines (apex, sampo, daewoo, etc)will play DVD-Rs and just about anything else (mp3, cdr, vcd, svcd, etc.) I bought my daewoo at Sam's Club over a year ago and it has played everything I've spun on it.
