Stupid excitement about my new Dish receiver...

I got a new Dish Network PVR receiver for Father's Day, and I just realized it's got an optical out on the back of it. Therefore, I can actually take advantage of the "Dolby Digital Where Available" message that comes up on various shows. Bought a new optical cable today and will hook it up tonight. Woo hoo!

Ok, that's my excitement for the day. Just wanted to share.

Sweet! I'm going to drop cable and make the switch soon myself.

Thread tangent with first reply: For those with experience and/or knowledge, what are the pros and cons of Dish Network vs. DirecTV, especially for someone with an HD-Ready TV? I'm finding it difficult to choose.

As far as HD reception goes, neither Dish nor DirecTV have a boatload of channels. That's one thing the cable companies keep touting (for now), is that they have more HD channels that either satellite providor. But all Sat. channels are digital, and unless you have digital cable, you're not getting that good a reception.

For us, cable wasn't an option, as we moved into a new subdivision, but about 750 feet off the main road. So when the cable company came, they told us they'd have to run "hard cable" down to our houses (we share a driveway with another house) and it would cost US (not the cable company) $2000. We said "FU" and got Dish. Plus, our monthly bill (although now we have America's Everything Pak, plus the Sports Pak, plus locals on 3 outlets) was cheaper and had more channels than cable.

As far as programming options b/w Dish and Direct, it's pretty much the same. Direct is a tad cheaper on some things, but when you start getting into movie channels, available channels, levels of programming, etc., it all about weighs the same. I actually have a spreadsheet of channels vs. cost that I did when I was thinking of switching to DirecTV from Dish--if you'd like it, let me know. The biggest 2 things I can mention are: DirecTV has NFL Sunday Ticket exclusively (they keep paying through the ass to the NFL to keep it) and (if you're into wrestling), DirecTV has NWA-TNA exclusively. It's not on Dish--instead of being syndicated or on a network like WWE, they do PPV shows each week for like $5-$10 a pop. Also, I think TiVo has it's own DirecTV box, whereas Dish has their proprietary PVR system. The difference being, Dish doesn't charge a monthly fee...but, they also don't do the TiVo stuff like watching your interests in programming, and then try to record programs it thinks you'd like. I really didn't care about all that (although it sounds cool), and I hated the idea of the subscription fee. But if you really want TiVo, I think it's compatible with Dish as well.

Hope all this helps!

Thanks for the info!

I already hav a Tivo, so I'd be getting the PVR-free version of either (if I can). I don't really care about the sports programming or wrestling either. If I'm more interested in movies and a variety of non-sports related programming, it sounds like Dish might be the way to go.

Cool.

I've got my DirecTV receiver connected via optical cable, but I'm getting NO activity from my rears with any of the channels outputing 5.1. Since those things are so damn sensitive, it may be a problem with the cable. I know most programming mixes very little sound to the rears, but I'm sure AOTC on HBO-HD should have been noticable.

Just watched the Dolby Digital version of "The Ring" on PPV, and it rocked. As soon as the movie started, sure enough, the "Dolby Digital" LED lit up on my tuner. Sweet!

Hey man, I'm glad you posted this. I'm just about to sign up with Dish Network and I was just going to get the crappy low-end receiver. If the PVR has DD, than I'm going to get that one instead.

I wish I had the $500 to fork-out for the HD receiver though. Maybe next time, when they have more programming. There's supposed to be some kind of 28" oval SuperDish coming out next year that can pick-up three satellites and bump up the number of HD channels. That should be cool when it gets here.

The triple-LNB oval dish (DirecTV) picks up three seperate satellites. Some of the newer HD channels (like Showtime-HD) are on the 3rd sat.

Hey and in two years you can get a cheap large flat screen TV!
