Looking for a good cheap DVD player

Thread Starter
My parents have asked me to help them find a DVD player. My parents are the most technically inclined people, so they need something that's easy to control. They also surely don't plan on wanting to replace this anytime soon so they need something reliable. I figure we're looking in the range of $100 +/- $25. They don't need any special features like digital output or even s-video for that matter. Any suggestions?

Most DVD players come standard with RCA, S-Video and Even Composite.

I'm a big Sony fan so I'd say go with them or RCA, or JVC or Panasonic. I know some people have had good luck with the cheaper brands. IE, Daewoo. Those run around 60 bucks and up.

Now if you can score a DVD play for around a 100 dollars that has progressive scan, then you got one hell of a deal.

Wal-mart, Bestbuy, Circuit City usually has some good deals. I'm sure you can find something nice for $100.

Costco had a Samsung for 80 that had S-Video, digital audio, mp3, vcd, svcd, dvd, and all that other jazz. About the only thing it didn't have was progressive scan. Now, I think it might be a different brand like Panasonic, but it's good quality and cheap.

don't know if it matters or not but I'll add that I was annoyed upon discovering that the new sony we got doesn't have an optical digital output(sound)...compared to the low-end brand it replaced.

Samsungs are good to go for. They're essentially low-end Panasonics anyway (both being owned by Matsushita), and some are comparable to some of the higher-end players. I myself own a Samsung 709.

I think you mean RCA, S-Video, and Component outputs. RCA and composite outputs are the same thing (analog yellow/red/white).

Samsung was bought by Matsushita? That must be why their quality has gone up.

Save some more cash and buy an X-Box or PS2.

If you want one on the cheap, go with Philips, Samsung, Toshiba or (my favorite) Pioneer. Sony is great, but much too expensive for the features you get. If you want one REALLY cheap, and your parents probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, you can get an APEX one for $60 bucks, around $90 if you want component and S-video.
