Kick ass review, Micah. I never had any intention of watching (let alone buying) Jackie Brown until now. It just didn't seem like anything I'd be interested in, but damn if that review wasn't as enthusiastic as all get out. You did a brilliant job of explaining why the movie worked for you without resorting to hyperbole or giving anything away.

Best Buy here I come.

Yeah, great review. I too felt the movie got a lot better once I saw it on video. As usual, the soundtrack alone makes it worth watching. (Anyone else think Tarantino should try tackling a musical? No, really.)

Heh...also very big of you to mention your rethinking of that "other" movie...looking forward to that. (But please, don't feel the need to back down or anything. Be honest.)

Definitely his best film. And Micah explained why.

Thanks for the feedback. As for the "other" movie...I'm not going to make a big production out of it. I'll see it again soon, and probably a couple of more times after that just to give it a clean slate and to be able to soak it all in.

Then, when I have a definitive opinion of it, I'll mention it in a low-key manner, just as Django did.

But this thread is for Jackie Brown...a film that deserves all the loving it gets.

I feel the same way about this film the way Micah did after seeing it the first time.

Ehhhh....

Well, somehow I had entirely missed Jackie Brown when it came out in theaters, and popped it into the ol' DVD player Friday night...and I was stunned. I loved it dearly, and I think most because it seemed the least like a QT movie, or at least, free of his most obvious tricks. I'm a big fan of PF, but the love QT shows towards Jackie and Max Cherry, their maturity, their complexity...it's almost impossible to find in these days of hormonal one-upmanship. Micah's right on every point in his review (I wouldn't put it in my top 10, but man is it up there). Such a heart this film has.

Anyhoo, I rewatched it again this afternoon, and damned if it wasn't even deeper. Just marvelous.

Best. Chud Review. Ever.

Great job. Great read. Funny. And very well written.

When the film came out (especially with the 110th Street opening) I thought Tarantino was just jerking himself off, and playing it safe after PF. And it seemed like De Niro and Keaton were wasted in bit parts.

Maybe I had to get older to realize making a movie about a 47 year old black airline hostess is as bold a move as you can make, and that there's nothing wrong with casting good actors in small parts if they're good in their scenes.

You know, I loved this film from the first time I saw it, and have been trying to convince people it really is Tarantino's best flick ever since. the last year, I've beeen much more succesful in achieve that goal than before... I don't know why this is, but the (excellent) review reminded me of this.

oh yeah, the DeNiro "once you go black" caption cracked me up. hehehehe

Great review - perfectly articulating exactly why I love the film, and deepening my frustration that my copy of the DVD is still in the post somewhere.

Jackie Brown may lack the visceral gutpunch of Reservoir Dogs, or the story-weaving dexterity of Pulp Fiction, but for all it's "normalness", it's far and away QT's best film. It feels like it's a film about real people. Previous Tarantino characters were cyphers, cool and studied, but I could never actually believe they existed. Jackie Brown is a tale about lost and lonely middle-aged people. It just happens to have a crime story running through it.

Thoroughly deserving of the Micah-love lavished upon it.

Unfortunately I didn't feel the same way about the film but when I put some time aside I will watch it again. But great review and caps....

"Holy Shitcakes, Mike…..what the fuck were you thinking when you made Jack Frost?"

Loved that one....

That review made me feel better about myself for loving Jackie Brown as much as I do.

Most of my friends (at the time it was released) dismissed it as over-long, or (worse) boring. ADD is a terrible malady, isn't it. Micah expressed in words what I feel for this movie. Excellent review.

I love that Michael Keaton carried the Ray Nicolette character over into Out Of Sight as well. Apparently, Soderbergh was adapting Out Of Sight, realised that the character was also in Rum Punch, and asked Tarantino if he'd mind them using Keaton for their movie too. Tarantino and Keaton loved the idea, and Keaton even did the cameo in Out Of Sight for free.

Really enjoyed that review, Micah!

I too saw Jackie Brown in the theater and belonged to the "huh" contingent, especially after seeing and loving Pulp Fiction (which is also worth purchasing.)

I decided to give this movie another chance cause I really wanted to like it on my initial viewing, but just couldn't grasp it. It's already in my Netflix queue.

As for the "other" movie, I have officially seen it 4 times in the theater and once on DVD. The first two times were in the first week of its opening last holiday season and I walked out of both viewings with a headache. I didn't truly enjoy it until I saw it again on my birthday in late March when it opened with the special preview of things to come. And then, in June or July, I saw it at the Fox and REALLY enjoyed it.

That review should be front and center in the CHUD coffeetable book of reviews and captions. Micah hit on all the intellect and infused it with passion...great writing, man. AND MUCH MUCH love for "subtext up your ass". I'll be using that wherever possible.
I love Pulp the most...but this movie is perfection...undoubtedly...and Pam Grier can use me nine ways to New Year anytime.

Damn, I'm honored. I'm glad that more people are loving it. It's one of "da greats."
