Mike's "Italian For Beginners" review

Mike,

I am glad you enjoyed this film, as I did as well. I saw it when it ran in limited release in Atlanta back in the spring. My sister absolutely LOVES this film (she saw it 3 times), though she is obsessed with Italy after living there after college.

I went to Italy for the first time with her in September to the town where my paternal great-grandfather was from, where I met Italian cousins for the first time and also traveled to Rome, Florence and Venice.

If you ever have a chance to go to Italy and have never been, DO IT! It is absolutely wonderful place to visit.

Now I am enrolled in a Saturday morning "Italian for Beginners" language class at Emory. So far, I am really enjoying it.

And in closing I wanted to point out that this film won the Silver Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival and is also the 12th film to produced under the terms of Dogme 95. No artificial light is used in the Dogme films...it's all natural light, hence its picture quality.

I have no knowledge of this film but I feel I must point out to Mike that this film is from Denmark, and therefore the language spoken is DANISH not Dutch (which is the language I usually speak, except on CHUD, of course). Maybe you should correct that little bit of info....

I stand corrected...I always make that mistake. It has been changed in the review.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the movie Andrew! This was one of the best films I've seen in a long, long time.

Andrew looks for any opportunity to discuss all things Italian.

Indeed. I am proud to be an Italian-American. Aren't you Nick?

And I've noticed that some reviews, despite how good the film is, warrant little response from Chewers, since it does not cater to their normal movie viewing tastes. This seems to be one of those movies.

That's MOST DVD reviews Andrew. Beauty and the Beast, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, and Waking Life were all notable exceptions, and two of those three were due in part to the minor controversy those reviews generated.

You just get used to it as reviewer, I suppose. I rarely find myself motivated to request feedback anymore.

BTW, Lud...tops review. I think I'll check this film out for myself soon.

I think people use their "heritage" a little too liberally. When it boils down, where we're born and where we're raised is the point. The rest is a crutch. You have an Italian name, but once you start talking... it's obvious you're from the South. I may grow hair faster than Starbucks serves coffee but when it boils down I'm a NY transplant.

True, I am a Southerner by nature, but I am just in that phase of my life where I have discovered my heritage and am enjoying what things it offers. Not everyone is given this opportunity, so I am making the best of it.

And as for the Italian hair gene, you're not the only one. I am Robin Williams, Jr.

I am trying to do reviews where I don't give away very much of the story and instead talk about what I liked/disliked, so that people reading them who haven't seen the movies can go see them and not have the experience ruined by me and my big mouth. But yeah, without some CHUD-favs in the mix, I am surprised that this review has recieved as much attention as it has. I shudder to thing what my Divine Secrets DVD review will garner here in terms of responses...
