Attack of the Clones DVD - Page 3

post #101 of 105
I actually dislike the way they do the commentaries as well. I'd much rather have a Lucas commentary all his own, because he spends his time discussing the story. I'm in agreement that all the technical stuff is boring. Besides, that's what the documentaries are for. For instance, in the opening scene between the Jedi and Palpatine in his office instead of listening to Lucas discuss some of the underlying story developments here, we have to listen to Rob Coleman talking about CGI Yoda the entire time. Dumb. Especially since ALL of that same stuff is in the "Puppet To Pixels" documentary.

Almost all of the commentaries were recorded separately, so perhaps one day we'll get the solo tracks. But, as I learned at both of the junkets, the THX guys required a minimum bitrate bandwidth for use on the transfer and soundtrack, so the decision was made to edit and combine the commentaries. This was the same with TPM.

Another thing about the commentary:
McCallum = Prick.

AS sucky as the prequel commentaries might be, nothing compares to how awful the tracks were on the Laserdisc Ultimate edition CAV releases. For the entirety of the trilogy there was probably about two hours of commentary spread out to chapters listed (but not necessarily correct) and no soundtrack (at all) behind.

That sucked.

Yep. And I think Lucas' commentary track as presented, actually disproves the myth Lucas only shares technical info on these discs. Lucas has NEVER been as forthcoming about his storytelling decisions.

And Andre is right. Those '93 laser discs were the dark times. Awful supplementary. Although audi/video was damn fine.

Here's a new theory. The end of each prequel gives a hint of the feel/tone of the succeeding chapter. I always felt that scene between Yoda and Obi-Wan at the end of TPM was a hint of EP2. In turn, I believe the incredibly dark feel in that meeting of the SITH, is a true preview of what to expect from EP3. Williams' music is almost horror-like in that scene.
