FOTR: Extended Edition Discussion

OK, I've started the features. It's gonna be a heck of an undertaking, so bear with me. My goal is for this to be Monday's headline.
Good luck my man. What's that like 12 hours of viewing time alone?

(BTW What's the status on the Domain project?)
Good luck. I can't wait till this comes out.
I'm interested to hear Nick's take on this, but the truth is it doesn't matter. I'm buying it no matter what.
I'll be interested in reading how he ranks the special features.

Although I'm buying it regardless, I'm wondering if these special features are truly informative or just quanity over quality.

However, the easter egg of the MTV Movie Awards parody is a definite plus in my book.

Can´t wait to read your review! Haven´t you seen the extended cut yet?

No, I haven't.

I already gushed for the film plenty in my reviews, s this'll be a little different of a structure.

Well as a person who has seen 6 hours of the docs I can tell you they are not quantity over quality.

They are filled with more goodness then your mom's cherry pie!

Nick did you use the lovely play all feature?

From the Empire magazine review:

Want to know more? That Andy ‘Gollum’ Serkis also voiced a Black Rider; that Elijah Wood has the sweatiest feet; that Christopher Lee kept tripping on his skirts; that John Rhys-Davies pictured Galadriel as Julie Christie; or that the mention of “tomatoes” is an anachronism? Of course you do.

Detail — lovely, luxuriant, unpretentious detail — is what this magnificent four-disc package gives you in spades. Tolkien, after all, craved background, and this wealth of knowledge and experience would convince even the old fuddy-duddy that these guys care.

Granted it is an expensive package, but you will return to these discs for years to come. There are literally weeks of material here to absorb, and not a second of filler.

Not one aspect of the filmmaking process is left unexamined, from old master Tolkien himself, to Wood’s camcording of the Hobbits’ arrival at the Wellington premiere. Eagle-eyed obsessives should look out for further cut scenes interspersed amongst the chit-chat.

I've finished all of the special features and two of the four commentaries. Almost there, killers.

I wish this was a 20 disc set.

How does the extended cut compare to the theatrical version?

Damnit I cannot wait for this.
MUST BUY! MUST BUY! eek!

And all this time you've been letting that poor Ratner man take the blame. Damn you, DeLude!
On a side note I saw that Toys R Us will be selling this for 29.99$. Thats the best price I seen on this yet.

Interesting.

But I can't think of even a film I like that I want to watch THAT much documentary material on.

I understand that, but most movies don't have so much material. There's so many years of material here, from the books themselves to the years of work to get this pup made. They were just wise enough to gather it.

I agree. I could see such a thing being done on perhaps Titanic....T2...Spidey....maybe the Matrix sequels. Not many movies have that much going on. And I think the technical craft behind LOTR is first-rate and should be well-documented.

Especially since WETA isn't (well, until now) the brand name that ILM or Sony Imageworks or whatever is.

Anyway...fantastic review. Like Carl's AOTC, I felt the love and passion for the work and it radiated throughout the piece.

I guess we all have our "sunrise" we're not crazy about.

LOTR. Radiohead's OK Computer. Pretty much any film in the "It Ain't a Classic" thread.

But at least we all have our other sunrises that we do love.
Wow. Much like the extended FOTR I will have to read the extended FOTR Review 3 or 4 times to take it all in. Great review Nick!
Great review. Since you've review the film twice already, I really liked the stream of consciousness thing going on. I can't wait to get my hands on this set.
Nick -

That review was incredible. I simply have to put my appreciation out there right now because up until now (with maybe the exception of Carl's AOTC review) I had never read that kind of passion and love of film in general in a review.

It is my belief that anyone can analyze a film and breakdown the good and the bad, but to give a review humanity - bravo.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go weep like a little girl because I have to wait till at least next Tuesday to get this gem.
Great stuff!

More DVDs like this and AOTC and we're going to need a whole new server to hold our reviews.
Thanks Nick!

Great review!
This DVD sounds too good to be real. Kind of like the film on the eve of it's release. I even dreamt I was watching it the other night. You know you're obsessed when the damn thing is penetrating your sub-conscious. (You're not the only one Nick!)

Good job on the review, but you've just made my week that much slower.
Excellent review Nick.

Now to scrape together some cash...
Great review Nick. Of course, I was going to buy it no matter what. The theatrical version was perfection to me. I can't wait to see some more. While watching the first DVD, I had the same thought. How can The Two Towers top this?
Awesome review Nick only makes me slober even more to get my hands on this puppy.
And to think I'll be seeing this on the big screen tomorrow night!

Poxy, I'd like to take this oppertunity to tell you how jealous I am, and also that jealousy makes men do crazy things...
Fantastic review Nick and thank you for this. Your review has me even more excited about getting this classic.....

PS: For me, this is one of your best reviews to date
post #40 of 191
Great job. I hope they put this version into wide release, and soon. It would kick ass to watch this the night before The Two Towers opens.
What do you mean Heat could have used an edit???
Missed that too. wink

Thanks, all. It was a long review to write, but the feedback's worth it. Please tell me one of you thought the idea of HIDE AND TRANSEXUAL was amusing.

Actually that was my favorite screencap.
Actually the Lord of the flies bit had me chuckling so much I had to take a pause and then continue reading .
<sigh> I knew I shouldn't have put it on my Christmas list... now I gotta wait a month and a half. Damn.

Great review.
Nick, it's great to read a review as loving as this one. excellent stuff! I cannot wait for my copy.

And I agree, Sean Bean as Boromir was amazing. just like pretty much the whole cast.

Personally, my fave screencap was the Shane McGowan one. hehehhehehe
post #48 of 191
Anticipation has reached a fever pitch thanks to your excellent review Nick. I'd be happy to purchase the Platinum Edition for the extra footage alone, but after reading the Goodies section of your review I've had to set aside the next two weekends of free time for all the goodness.

Incidentally, I didn't watch the MTV Movie Awards, but was that Jack Black in the last screen cap?

Use the link Nick provided on the review page and you'll pay $25.99 through Amazon, with a kickback to CHUD.

Yeah, and there's Sarah Michelle Gellar in the background. It's a hilarious parody.

Danke Rob.

I heard a buddy of mine say he thinked the Academy should have nominated Sean Bean for best supporting actor. I couldn't have agreed more just a real gem of a performance.
