I seem to recall that each of the three gift set designs will work together as a whole -- and, after all, we don't need a set of bookends for each inch-and-a-half of product...

So, I think The Two Towers Gift Set will have a bookcase, and Return of the King will come with a house.

I love the new cut. LOVE it. I can't believe no one has yet mentioned just how different it really is. It is not just that they added and expanded scenes, the whole movie has been rescored! Even in scenes where the music is exactly the same, it isn't. The music is quieter in most places, and in some places totally silent... It seems to me that there was more faith placed on the actors to drive the emotions of the audience than the theatrical release, which was at times dependant on a bombardment of (really awesome) music (dwarrowdwelf, for example).

Definitely a lot of treats, especially for people who love the books. There is so much love for the book put into this movie, by everyone from the cast to the writers to the miniature makers... (anyone else shocked by how many shots were begun in miniatures?) It is hard to speculate what a person who was not familiar with the story would think of this cut. It feels way more like the book to me, and that is why I love it. The more stuff they put in to set up aragorn, the more I anticipate the next two movies. There are a lot of references that will go over people's heads, but still add to the richness and mystery of it all, I think. A lot of people love the books without ever understanding what 75% of the references which are made really mean, or the full story behind them. (like the many songs sung in rivendell, and where the light in the phial of galadriel originally hails from) and no one understands them all, except JRR himself, maybe.

It felt even less like any other movie I have ever seen than the original did, a completely foreign experience from what movies normally do for me. I love it.

I am at work, as I type, and I fear that I have begun the "wraithing process."

While I agree somewhat, Dwarrowdelf was the cause of my one complaint of the film, which is Sam's 'Now that's a sight for sore eyes...' line, which I felt interrupted the awesome soaring music rather clumsily.

Funny you should say that. I felt that the awesome soaring music almost drowned out that line rather clumsily. Didn't seem as bad on the DVD.

Am I the only one whop thought that Gandalf's response to Boromir nearing the Ring in Rivendell was extremely fucking awesome?

Indeed, as is Elrond's reaction to Gandalf using the Black Speech.

But I think my favorite moment in the whole set is in the Fellowship of the Cast doc when Christopher Lee bellows, "I cannot walk up these goddamn steps!" Hilarious.

There is some inspiring stuff on Disc 3. When one of the guys....I forget his name....is talking about "hope". Saying that you have no idea what the future will be like, so why despair? There's always hope.

I love this stuff, will probably tackle more of it later on.

I can't find the ticket that I'm supposing I should have gotten. What gives???

Capt, I think it was inside the plastic-wrapped Hobbit-sized Official Fan Club Magazine (and, I just learned that we all got the same 3 Hunters cards as stated on the back of that Magazine). Have you removed your Argonath bookends yet? If not, it could be hiding behind it. That's a great $10 deal!

Got mine this morning. Unfortunately, the "I have to go buy food or else I'll starve soon" plus the fact that I also got the last 3 Preacher TPB will detract from my "spend week end watching the goddamn dvd" plan. But it sure feels good to have it in hand.

Just finished watching the extended cut.

This'll be relatively short and sweet.

Not much changed. I appreciated the additional characterization, but it wasn't really that helpful.

Still got the same plot holes, the same inconsisitencies, the same violations of its own logic all over the place. And it betrays almost every meaningful moment in the film, especially Gandalf and Boromir's deaths.

And so it remains...a wonderfully acted, but imcomprehensibly plotted and indulgently directed sprawl of a film.

The one thing I DID appreciate more was the break in the middle. In fact, watching this at home when you can stop it for bathroom breaks and to rest your eyes is the ideal environment for such a film.

And as long as these films are in the 3-hour range that's really the only way I want to watch them. I'm not damning the other two yet sight unseen. But I certainly don't want to spend another 3 hours in theater only to emerge frustrated with a new list of plotholes and leaps in logic. I think I'd watch them the same way I did this one. I'll borrow somebody's DVD.

But kudos to New Line for the superior presentation of this film. And kudos to those involved for at least trying. That counts for something.

No dice. (Or tickets for that matter.) Back to Suncoast to get the ticket.

Well while you think they're "trying" Micah the fact remains they have succeded.

I really thought this version would have changed your mind about the film but hey you were a trooper and actually went ahead and watched the whole damn thing which I can see is more then most would have done.

Well if you want the that 16.99 (nice price aye? ) DVD its all yours and I really mean that.

I gambled. I lost frown
Well, if they'd succeeded, you wouldn't be offering me the DVD, CT.

And as before, I say nay....pay it no mind. I don't need compensation for a failed adventure I willingly undertook TWICE.

It's just not what I consider a good film.
I'm not surprised the extended cut didn't change Micah's mind. I think you have to at least like the original to appreciate the extra scenes. I think more than anything else the extra scenes are a bonus for thoughs who loved the original cut and the source material.

Hey, he tried and that's more than most would do. Watch a 3 hour film once, not like it, and watch an extended cut of the same film and still not like it. Most folks wouldn't bore themselves so much. Wish I knew such open-minded people off of this board.......

Yes. I would never watch a film again if I didn´t like it. Especially if it is 3 & 1/2 hours long. But kudos to Mikah for trying.

Does anyone know what Pippin says at the beginning of the song at the Green Dragon? The first line of the song.

I'm not sure, but I do know that Greedo shoots him first.

Quick question for those who've watched the commentary tracks:

I've watched two thus far and they'll just leave one of the speaker's names at the top of the screen for long periods of time, regardless of who is actually speaking at the time. Has this happened to anyone else?

Not for long periods of time but sometimes for a few seconds.
My discs do this occasionally. It's playing the wrong subtitle track for the commentary. Turning on the commentary track you're listening again seems to reset it.
I haven't listened to the commentaries yet. Just trying to absorb everything I can from the extended cut without any added info. I've seen the extended cut about 4 times now. It just keeps getting better and better.

Pure. Bliss. And. Joy.

The bit in A Day in the Life of a Hobbit where Wood, Boyd, and Monaghan take turns grousing about each other behind their backs was downright hilarious.
I agree!
I love when they ask Monaghan what he thinks about Billy and he says something, I can't remember exactally what, but something endearing and then Billy comes on laughing saying that "Dom's an idiot." And Monaghan has a great knack for imitating everyone else's voices! Very funny!

I got a pretty big kick outa Sean Bean's fear of heights and the way he was getting on location hiking and climbing. Also the bit where they are talking about John Rhys Davies and him really throwing ax shots at the stunt guys lol.
Me too! I also thought it was really funny when he (Sean Bean) was talking about how he couldn't get the hang of the boats so he would knock Orlando's boat off track.
LMAO yeah also one of the things that I thought was really cool was when they were talking about Viggo and when he first saw his sword. How excited he got and how he took it and kept it with him at all times. Also the story of his son was great.
Oh I know, and then these people called the cops on him! It would be a pretty odd sight I suppose!
I laughed out loud at how Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan kept Elijah Wood in the dark for a year over the rules of Tig-Tig. These guys sound like they're a blast to hang out with.
Oh, I didn't see that! What disc was that on?

Also, I think someone said something about Sam cutting his foot on a rock in the last scene of the movie and Frodo was just laughing at him...am I making this up? If anyone knows what I am talking about, where was that?
Yeah, Sean Astin stepped on a rock or something when he was filming the scene where he runs from the shore near Amon Hen after Frodo. He cut it quite badly, bled a lot, and had to be airlifted to a hospital, but Elijah Wood couldn't stop laughing.

HATE the new opening. HATE it.

The only good bit is the Bilbo as ring addict scene.

I prefer the theatrical cut opening to the new one, but I don't see why it should cause such hatred. Perhaps a more detailed explanation, Rath?
I dunno, I do prefer the Extended Edition storywise (the Lothlorien scenes are fantastic now), but the theatrical edition flows so much better. I dislike the new opening as well, and I don't like the re-cuts at the end (I think that Boromir getting shot doesn't work as well in a dramatic sense in this one. the build up of Lurtz approaching, taking an arrow, targeting Boromir, etc. feels rushed now. also don't like the new piece of music there). I'm sure that I would have had no such feelings if I had only seen the EE, instead of having watched the Theatrical Cut about a gazillion times....
I also don't really like the new Shire introduction. The original was tighter and had a greater sense of wonder and magic. But I have to agree that Lothlorien was GREATLY improved. This material shouls have been in the theatrical release.

I'm slowly making my way through the appendices and I have to say that the amount of work done for these films is amazing. It's almost insane that they managed to pull it off and not self-combust 5 hours into the pre-production process.

And I'm really feeling sorry for the poor soul who had to assemble all the chain link armour. I bet he is totally insane by now.

I agree with this 100% and I shared so with Nick when we were talking about it the other day. Otherwise, I love the EE. But I really did prefer the tone, pacing, and editing of the Theatrical version of the Shire & Gandalf introduction.
