Anyone pick up Spider Man yet?

This DVD is a comic fan's wet dream. It is absolutely packed with extras and special features. I went to my local Best Buy and was totally caught off guard by this, that I had to purchase it immediately. It was on sale for only 15 bucks, and after taking a look at the back of the case and shitting my pants on the spot at the sheer amount of extras this thing has, I bought it.

That was two days ago, and I haven't even touched a third of the specials yet.

Definately recommended to ANYONE.

I don't know who to unleash my wrath upon: DeepDiscountDVD or the college mailroom. I ordered the gift set weeks ago, still don't have it. I've been dissapointed as hell all weekend.
This is a damn good gift set. I am going to frame the lithograph.
picked it up yesterday at Target for 15 bucks. Was not sure if I was going to get it, but now that I have, I'm glad I did.
is good. 15 bucks at best buy... on the way out, i torched the full screen versions. i'm writing this from jail.

Does anyone else have a Toshiba SD2200 DVD player? I do, and I noticed the little factoids feature of the Spider-Man disc turns itself on every twenty minutes or so. I'm glad I rented instead of bought.

Has this been a problem for anyone else?
Well I just recieved some very depressing news: My Spider-Man gift set will not be arriving until, at the latest, the 13th. THE 13TH. Shit, FOTR:EE will be out by then.

Well I play mine on a Toshiba laptop, and I don't have that problem.
anyone know if they included an easter egg similar to the one Nick referred to in the FOTR-extended cut review?

That mtv parody had me in stitches when I saw that...
I think if there is an easter egg of that MTV parody (agreed, hilarious), no one's found it yet.

But the mailroom finally had it! I rushed back to my room and popped it in. I'm the happiest boy!
The technical side of the disc is grade-A. Nothing to complain about. As far as the special features go, the comic side is filled with good stuff including a look at Spidey comics across the decades and how his look has changed.

However, the movie side of the special features is 1000% fluff. Nothing very informative. The commentaries are rather dry and boring, and FILLED with silences. And the majority of the cast/crew commentary IS NOT Sam Raimi, which was a mistake.
I got the disc yesterday and I must say I´m a little bit disappointed with this 2 disc set. The transfer could have been better(It´s not bad). The effects looked better in cinema. The extras are okay but as this is a very popular film couldn´t they have made any in depth documentary about the project. Just some commercial stuff.
Cheese and Infinite are correct: most of the extras on this disc are PANTS. The comic documentary owns, but it should be way longer. And I shall destroy E! one day.
I'm rather sad to say that I saw this coming. When I heard that they were not including the original teaser trailer, I could see they were playing it safe and weren't going to go out of their way to bring joy to the fans. I was very interested in how the film got made, as the road it went down is a rather lengthy one. Hell, you could probably make a whole 3 season TV series about how long it took this movie to get made.

Anyway, I was interested to hear in the commentaries how many budget problems they had. With this and X-Men, you'd think studios could recognize solid comic book films when they see them and offer a wee bit more money to even things out.

Here are the scores I give the Spidey DVD:

The Film: 9/10
The Video: 8/10 (I can't complain)
The Audio: 8/10 (nothing fabulous, but nothing bad)
The Special Features: 6.5/10
The Cover Art: 8/10 (nice how the back is just a picture of Peter and Mary Jane in the upside-down kiss, with no plot summary or critic babble)

(Edited for grammar)

Raimi sure wraps up that commentary in a hurry.
so... what about the movie?

i gotta admit... unfortunately, i enjoyed the movie lots more the first time with the giddy joy of it simply not sucking. i still love it, but seeing it at home makes the flaws a little more glaring.
I'm amazed how imbalanced it is. Some of the scenes are glorious, but they're interspersed with bits that, especially for a Raimi flick, are frankly yawnsome. This includes most of Kirsten's scenes.
I guess I'm just a big old fanboy. I've seen the film 6 or 7 times now and it hasn't lost anything for me.

I still think it's a terrific tribute to the comics and the best superhero flick ever made.

The DVD on the other hand......
I notice some of the bad effects now on DVD. But I actually enjoy the film more now than I did before. Good stuff.
A lot of people have been saying this movie loses something at home. I have yet to get the DVD so I can't say for myself, but I'm shocked at the number of people who're downgrading this movie left and right.

Wait until you read Nick's review...
Movie hasn't lost or gained anything for me, but I am VERY disappointed with the technical quality of the disc. The trasnfer is, quite frankly, pretty weak for a film and title of this character. The Audio is pretty good, but nothing stellar. Oh well.

Oh, and if this wins the Oscar for Best Visual Effects who can I kill?

All in all, I still like the film very much. It's definitely above average as far as comic flicks go, but I still say it falls short of the first two Supes flicks.

i think my only real problem is with the "movie romance". Peter has lived next to MJ for 12 years and never really spoken to her, but by the end of the film she's in love with him? that's more leeway than i can give. it would've been easier to swallow if they'd at least been somewhat friendly when growing up, or if they'd just been complete strangers.

other than that, my gripes are actually pretty minor.
that and i think Dunst is wrong wrong wrong for the role. should've been Jessica Biel or Alicia Witt.
I guess I'm just a big ole fanboy too, 'cause I love Spider Man. Seen it four times and I most definitely will watch it at least four more times. I've waited years for it, and it was worth the wait.
My major complaint with the discs is that you need a magnifying glass in order to tell which menu features are selected...

I didn't see Spidey in the theatres, but picked up the DVD on the exchange program. I enjoyed the movie, but there were some terribly slow and "off" moments ... whose idea was it to have entire dialogue scenes played between two immovable masks?

So true, DD. And on the DVD, she's frankly embarassing.
Gwen Stacy took the loss across the board when it comes to this film.

And I agree with some of you. Dunst harms. She and Elfman's "score" are the two glaring weak links of the film. Don't have a problem with too much else unless I was nitpicking, though.
Agreed.. the score, particularly the opening titles, has grown on me since I saw in theatres.
I bought the gift set on its release date, came home, and opened it up. Love the Romita(s) art, the film cell is rather pointless but nicely displayed, and that Stan Lee's Monsters Mutants and Marvels is actually pretty darned interesting (except for Kevin Smith's tendancy to say "uh huh" and "right" after every one of Lee's sentences). I threw on the second disc of the movie thinking I was in for some good making-of action, and what do I get? E!.. an EPK fluff job.. a "gag" reel, wtf. Turned off by the whole experience I put the disc away and haven't actually picked it back up again until tonight.
The only redeeming quality about this second disc is the Comic section. Damn well done.
As far as the documentaries and making-of's go, they're completely studioized ass-kissing tools of the devil. If you actually want some informative, thoughtful behind the scenes on Spider-Man, turn on the spidey sense thing when you watch the movie and click when appropriate. Cool stuff, those webisodes.
Yep I always liked Alicia Witt she would have been awesome. Weirdly before Spidey came out I thought Dunst looked terrible in the previews and when I saw the film I was surprised at her performance. Granted it wasn't great but it was serviceable. I think the real problem was how MJ and Gwen Stacey were mixed together to create Mary Jane in the film.

Spiderman I think was a solid effort but it wasn't great. More shocking than anything was Elfman's lifeless score. When I heard he was doing the score I thought he'd create an original theme that'd resonate the way the Batman score did boy was I wrong. Anyways I would have purchased the DVD right away had it been a more mint package too bad.
Fuck a duck, I love this flick and I love more with everytime I see it. And I actually LIKE Durst as Mary Jane. Shoot me, I do. The word SOLID is a perfect mate for this film. Greatness, it is, says I.

Now, the score I can do without. It's not bad in the least (for that to happen, Euro-techno would need to be involved), but it does not match the solid film it was scored to.
I like Durst as MJ, but I don't think she's the MJ of the comic. Where as the MJ has a sly sexiness to her, Durst plays it like the girl next door. I mean, can you ever picture seeing Durst's MJ saying the infamous "Jackpot" line?

Again, I like Durst's MJ, but I also have some love for comic book MJ.

But I do have to agree that the score is pretty weak. With the exception of the opening titles, the score become's practically non-existant. Just check out the composer profile and it's proof of the score's weakness. It's basically: if you drop out all the voices and sound effects, you may here someone tuning up their instrument and calling it music.

BJs with MJ, of course. That's what we're talking about right?

Fuckers, the Chocolate Goblin and the Hot Dog Flavored Spider-men is over in the Sex forum.

I have a quick question about the image quality of the dvd, to see if maybe I got a bad disc that needs returning...or if it's just the way they all are.

In the scene just before the Green Goblin wipes out the board of directors and takes out the balcony...MJ and the guy are having a talk.

In the frame where the camera is on MJ the screen jitters slightly up and down a little (kind of like that scene in Fight Club where the hose guy sprayed the priest...and the camera man couldn't contain his laughter). It only does that when it's on her, and nowhere else.

thanks in advance.

So there I was, watching Spider-Man on opening day, May 3rd, and when I walked out of the theater, and thought to myself: I didn't like it. At all. I had some reservations with the plot, some acting and whatnot.

Meanwhile, months pass (yes, I only saw it once in its entire $403 million dollar theatrical run) and lo and behold, out comes this dvd set. So, I figure, what the hey, I'll rent it again, give it another chance.

Well, on the second viewing with no pressure and not caring, it's a damn entertaining film. Nothing more, nothing less. I still have some reservations with some scenes (i.e. Goblin and Spider-Man on the rooftop - why didn't he just take off his fuckin' mask?) and some costumes (Goblin, The Chin's), some plot (I want more with Uncle Ben and Aunt May damnit!, Every scene with Oscorp and the flying board is uneven, at least to me) but all in all I had a more enjoyable time the for the second go around.

Anyways, that's my story, take it or leave it.
I have to agree. I was actually sort of bored with it the second time through. I mean, I was absolutely smitten with it when I first saw it and still love it to death but it's just a tad weaker now.

Just wanna make clear that I still LOVE the film but think it hardly stands up to repeat viewings.
Yeah, hu, bout the "loses interest on repeated viewings" thing? Disagree. Saw the movie four times in the theater (which I hadn't done in 4 years) and each time was sweeter than the previous one.
But that's because in France "Private Ryan" is pronounced "Spiderman."

I still think this movie is great, and the DVD is a solid addition to my collection. Now that I think about it, Elfman's score is kinda weak. It reminds me too damn much of the Batman theme. But other than that I love this movie and I love the DVD.
It's only grown on me more.
Actually, I saw the majority of the film for a 3rd time last night and the 3rd time's a charm. It's growing on me even more. The commentary was great....nice hearing Kirsten talk about her underwear. wink

I really wanted to lean over the atlantic and punch her after hearing that commentary. Sam should have bitchslapped her. Dumbest actress ever.

I saw her a couple of years back on Celebrity Jeopardy!, and it was embarassing. I swear, an SNL parody could not have made her seem dumber. She actually got a multiple choice question wrong b/c she chose an option that WASN'T one of the choices.

I will always be disappointed that Laura Prepon (that 70s show) was not cast as Mary Jane. She would have been PERFECT in my opinion--the right mix of sassiness and sweetness. Not to mention the look. Rowr.
Except that Prepon would have towered over Maguire. MJ was a model; Prepon is a horse. They could show a screening of Spider-man on her ass. Nice tits though. Biel was my choice or Vinessa Shaw but Dunst was fine.
Anyone else having trouble with the "Making of" material on the 2nd disc? I can watch the movie just fine, and all the comic book features, but when I go to menu for the behind the scenes stuff, it's like my remote locks up. I thought the batteries had gone, but it's only on this disc and this menu.

There's nothing in there that I'm particularly fussed about - but it does bug me.
There was a rumor way back that said Alicia Witt had been chosen for the part of MJ. While I was fine with Dunst, I would have loved to see Witt take a shot at it. Plus, she's a genius so we wouldn't have to put up with a dumbass commentary.
Witt was a popular Internet geek choice based almost entirely on hair color. Don't think she ever had a real shot at it.

THEM'S FIGHTIN' WORDS!

Seriously, though, I seem to remember comics where MJ was at least as tall if not tall than Peter Parker. I don't get the horse comment at all. And if Laura Prepon's ass is too fat for you, well, welcome to Anorexia Acres. wink

I stand by my choice. Strength, sassiness, sweetness. She'd have been better than Dunst.
