Signs review and discussion - Page 2

SPOILERS

Saw Signs yesterday. On the plus side, the scary bits were done very well, and Gibson had some great laugh-out-loud comedic scenes. On the down side, I though the deep/meaningful stuff was pretentious garbage, and various plot points contrived beyond belief (especially Gibson "finding his faith again"... seriously, that was pukeworthy). Also, Syhamalan needs to stay BEHIND the camera in future. His appearance was pure vanity. A fun Hitchcock style walk-on is one thing, but when you're a shit actor and you give yourself a role like that, then it ends up harming the movie.

Question: When the family emerges from the basement and they're walking up the stairs, in the background you can see weird patterns made by the sunlight shining through one of the window boards. It looks kind of like a child's stencil set with star symbol, crescent, etc. I think I might have missed something... What was the significance of this meant to be?

I always thought that the aliens who terrorised the family were juvenile aliens sent to play around and cause trouble while the real soldier aliens tried to "take over the world".

The shapes were carved out by them...probably showing their immaturity and curiosity about space.

I'm fairly sure that the aliens didn't carve those shapes, but that they were already part of the decor of the house. I found the cartoony stars rather ironic, really, since there were bad aliens about that the world under attack, then we see a childlike version of the nighttime sky.

Definitely one of the most emotional films of 2002. "Did somebody save me?"
"Yes, I think someone did."
and the aliens were not bad looking. For one thing, how can we judge how good they look, when we dont even know if they exist? The design was mostly based on drawings that abductees usualy draw.

The piece of wood used on that window comes from the childrens climbing frame/slide in the garden - the one the girl hides on after the dog attacks her. Definitely placed there as a cute visual motif for when they emerge.

And I didn't think Shyamalan did a bad job in his role.

maybe its my dvd player, but i noticed an unusual amount of grain on this dvd, especially in the earlier scenes. As for the review, excellent job as usual nick.

My four year old is entranced by the "Night's first alien movie" footage on this DVD. She covers her ears, and has to turn away from it for most of the 1 minute running time, but she's hooked. It's kind of cute... a little future horror fan being hatched.

I saw this last night and was floored. I took way too much disappointment into this movie. "The end this, the symbolism that." I thought , for what it was, it was just right.

I finally saw this over the weekend, also. I loved it. I kept waiting for some big twist right up to the party footage, then I knew the twist was out in the open all along. And what a great way to reveal the aliens.

And I should probably change my screen name to littlebitch41 because I teared up during the last flashback when Gibson talks to his dying wife. I'm a big girl.

Excellent film. And since I've finally read the review- excellent review, Nick.

I'll remember to do that should I send you some new content in the mail littlebitch41...

I agree about that segment really being lump throating inducing. Which reminds me how lumpy throaty I got when the Elves showed up at helms deep in the two towers.
