Polanski's THE TENANT

I just saw that DVD for 5$ so I'm very temted to pick it up. And it's not even a used disc but brand spanking new! I've never seen this film before and have heard it described as everything from psychological thriller to horror. Is there a reason Paramount dumped it on a cheapo DVD? I like Polanski's early films and I love ROSEMARY'S BABY. So ... any advice, fiends?

If you like Polanski then you'll dig it. I liked it alot. It shares alot with both Repulsion and Rosmary's Baby. I don't know why it's dumped on a five dollar disk, but damnit man for five bucks you could do WAY worse. Pick it up... enjoy.

I picked up the $5 version of The Tenant earlier this week and will probably watch it this weekend. I saw about a third of it years ago and I liked what I saw. Now I own it all for the price of a rental.

I also bought The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari for $3.

Bump from way back.

Sppoky and creepy as fuck, this is one that gets under your skin, and builds terrifically as it goes on. Due to the volume of media coverage, it's hard not to think of Polanski's personal life when thinking about the level of paranoia and alienation in this, but even putting that to one side, it's an incredibly atmospheric descent into madness, triggered by the horror of seeing and hearing Nicole scream in the hospital and amplified by the deeds of the other tenants.

One of Polanski's strong points in the films of his I've seen is his endings, and that's no different here- the last 15 minutes are dramatic and horrifying. great stuff.

This movie really fucked me up when I first saw it as a teen. The howls in that final scene... jeeze. Gave me nightmares. I feel that this movie is aching to be discovered by a new generation. That said, for me, the film is also inexorably linked to Skinny Puppy's song Choke.

Yeah, it really needs to be rediscovered rather than remade- it feels authentically tense, scary and personal. I also reckon the cross-dressing stuff would be seen to be offputting for the audience the recent slew of horror remakes is going for.

"No one does it to you like Roman Polanski."

That's actually a pretty great trailer.
