Hal Ashby

Somehow this guy came out of nowhere and is slowly becoming one of my all time favorite directors. I have been watching his movies a lot recently, saw Being There for the first time last year, and I'm simply in awe of his work. Being There, Shampoo, and Harold and Maude are as good as films get. I've never noticed any Ashby love on the boards before, but he deserves it. I really hope that some of you will check out his films if you have never seen them before, they are fucking amazing, and they can't be beat.

I have to be honest. I haven't seen any of those films. What is his style like? I'm interested.

Now this is more like it, Bateman!

Check out "The Last Detail" with Nicholson. Great movie.

A talented and idiosyncratic filmmaker whose influence looms over modern directors like Spike Jonze and Wes Anderson.

Well that sounds like my cup of tea!!!

That's funny... now that I remember, my wife just bought the book "Being There" on a friend's recommendation. We planned on checking the flick out.

I'll have to report back once it's viewed.

Almost every thing Wes Anderson has done feels directly inspired by his work, especially Harold and Maude.

Re: his style. It's a very naturalistic, and human take on a lot of important issues but he infuses a lot of cynicism, but somehow he manages to be optimistic.

If you don't dig the three films I mentioned then I will be very surprised.

Good to hear. I'm about as big of a Spike and/or Wes fan as you could get. So's my wife, so we'll definately be checking these out. Thanks, I'm always looking for stuff like this.

Don't think I am implying that Anderson or Jonze are not worthy of all their acclaim, I think they are the future of filmmaking and the closest thing we have to the great output coming from the studios during the 70's. They are two of my favorite contemporary directors, period.

Just watch how people talk about him in Decade Under the Influence of Easy Riders, Raging Bulls. There is just a pure love for the man from his contemporaries. Apparently he just loved making movies.

Definately see The Last Detail.

You're obviously not as well-versed as you claim to be.

The Last Detail is fucking incredible. It's an odd mix of drama, comedy, satire, and bitter cynicism--which is a great thing in my book. The movie seemed headed towards a somewhat melodramatic ending, which still would have worked, but ole Ashby turned around and made the most cynical ending you will come across. It's not a comedy, but there are a few moments that are absolutely hilarious. The bit with Randy Quaid doing the signals toward the end and Jack's suprised reaction are priceless.

"I'm the motherfucking shoreguard, motherfucker!"

This wouldn't be the first time something went over my head.
