Trailer for THE MACHINIST

It's the new film from director Brad Anderson (SESSION 9) and screenwriter Scott Kosar (TCM 2003). It also stars the annorexic American Psycho:

interesting. longest teaser trailer in fucking history. did nothing to sell the film. a couple of good moments here and there. but scott kosar and brad anderson are good in my book. so ill definately be checking it out. hopefully a full trailer will give a better idea of the film.

Actually I liked that they gave so little away. I think US viewers are too accustomed to those big studio trailers that are basically 2 minute summaries of the entire film with tons of spoilers. This teaser trailer simply illustrated what was already known from the plot synopsis and gave you an idea what the film will look like, what kind of visual style it will use.

I'm pretty sure that this is the same footage that was recently shown as part of a Filmax promo reel so maybe it is not exactly a theatrical teaser at all.

This I must see

ahhhh....my kind of movie

The cinematographer did Nacho Cerda's sublime Genesis and David Alcalda's insane b/w short Doctor Curry - it's one good (if grimy and sparse) looking picture. Anderson certainly knows how to frame.

That said, it's probably the worst trailer I've ever seen and makes the plot look incomprehensible.

Well, a cinematographer who made corpse-fucking look so good is certainly the right guy to light Christian Bale's annorexic almost-corpse!

But I really don't understand what your problem with the trailer is. It goes on for 3-4 minutes and shows nothing else except a guy who hasn't slept in a year and is getting increasingly paranoid ... or is he? What's not to get or "incomprehensible" about that?

Genesis was the semi-sequel to Aftermath, the "corpse-fucking" picture, as you so delicately put it...

A trailer's primary job is to lay out the beats of the story in a compelling, stylish and enticing manner, to sell and market the picture's energy, its mystery to an audience - to "trail" the manner in which the film is presented. If it's presented, as this trailer sells it, as a series of (albeit beautifully composed) scattershot scenes with incongruous music and effects dropping in and out with no rhyme nor reason and scant regard for sequence building or narrative coherence (in a cinematic sense - any good trailer will have a rhythm and pace and mini encapsulation of a film's plot all to themselves - not literal story sense), then you can count me out. It looks like a pretty The Mangler from the trailer. Something you might expect from Filmax, but not Anderson or Bale.

I'm pretty sure it is the promo reel that Filmax is showing to sell the film and NOT a theatrical teaser trailer. That would be insane. It would not be the first time that Filmax would make Promo Reel footage available online. They did it for DARKNESS and ... um ... the gem that was ARACHNID.

@ stiffie: Now you have to tell me about the surprise ending! Don't you think you can claim something like this and not be asked to spill the beans. If you end up being right I'll salute you (or make hot man-love to you, whatever you like! ) and if you're wrong I'll have a good laugh at your expense! Just make sure you use that clever invisible typing stuff for it or you'll start a flame war!

i.e they're too cheap to cut a proper trailer.

Shame, because the first 30 seconds are rather good.

No, they're being generous.

They are making public what usually only suits see at your average film market probably months before they start to advertise the film in theaters.

You'll get "proper" teasers / trailers when they start to promote the film to the Spanish Joe Averages.

Nope. I work for a distributor, and if we were given that to look at, we'd pass on it quicker than raw pork through an unset stomach.

Filmax do do quite nice show reels - Beyond Reanimator and Dagon, which we ended up buying, for instance, but this is just awful.

Ultimately, it rests with the MD and money police, but the joy of being an indie distributor is your much freer to bring things to peoples attention no matter where in the company strata you are - I'm a DVD marketing co ordinator for the record - everything from sales to design to copy to...

*edited to clarify* the picture itself maybe fine ( I actually think it'll probably be a neat little head fuck), if you know Anderson's work etc etc...however, you'd be hard pressed to sell this to your finacial director based on that garbled editing job.

hmmmm..

this thing actually made the CC news page as a "trailer"???

come on, folks..

theres no WAY thats a trailer.. the website clearly labels it a teaser.. and its obviously not the kind youre gonna see in between episodes of the simpsons.. its just some promotional footage.

the least that could have been done would be to call it like it is.

how in the world are people here actually judging it as a trailer?

any idiot can tell its no where near a finished trailer just by looking at the freakin FONT used for the title cards.

Looks pretty damn good. The 'mindfuck' genre is one of my favorites.

I agree (see my posts above) but the problem is that Filmax labeled it as "Teaser 1" on their website ...

BTW, if you try the link from the CC main page or my initial post again you'll find out that the trailer/teaser/promo-reel has VANISHED from the Filmax site!

They must've been reading the negative posts here!

They probably want to sell it to Straxboy and got scared by his hate speech!
Wouldn't be surprised if it turns up in our office in the next month or so...
Where exactly can i find the trailer on the filmax website?

Below the poster of "THE MACHINIST" there's only the option 'stills'...
they took it down..
use your zen skills and be patient. my spider sense tells me a trailer will hit the web verrrry soon
post #23 of 24
its back up

essentially the same, but theyve cut it better, tighter.. now it seems to flow properly. Improved the music too. and a coupla new shots slipped in there.
I wonder if we made a difference.

I still maintain there's a really good 1 1/2 minute trailer buried somewhere in there.

And the synth-cod-Goldsmith chase music is still clunking.

But, as I said, Anderson's got a wicked eye. I'll bite.
