"Suspiria" or "Opera"?

Something I've been mulling over since I watched Suspiria on Halloween: I think I actually like Opera more.

Visually, Suspiria is a superior film. Production design, visual language, lighting...absolutely amazing and wrought for the upmost effect. Opera, on the other hand, doesn't necessarily suffer as much narratively and I think it's much more demented too.

Anyone else see where I'm coming from? Or are there a few of you out there who remain steadfast that Suspiria is Argento's best?

I gotta go with Suspiria on all levels with this one.

I do think it is Argento's best, but in saying that I will also add that it's not Opera, but Inferno that I've really enjoyed watching over the last few years.

I'm with ya on this one Rotten. Opera has been my favorite Argento film for a while. Guess I just like the plot of Opera better, as funny as that sounds. It's just a much more brutal film, and visually it might not be on par with Suspiria's insane colors and style, but it's up there. And it's got one of my favorite kills of all time in it (the peephole, of course).

i still like SUSPIRIA best. The occult angle really appeals to me, and I just find it plain old scary.

Visual language...that's a great phrase.

To me, Opera has the story ans Suspiria has the look.

Opera's idea of the killer suddenly grabbing the girl everytime he kills is a nifty trick at first, but wears out for me quickly and turns into a hokey premise.

Suspiria is like a technicolor nightmare. The visuals are awesome, but the story is good, if a little goofy in execution.

The double murder in the beginning is one of the best scenes ever filmed.

I still hold out for Tenabre as my fav Argento (owww, man those ax hits make me wince), with Suspiria a close second.

SUSPIRIA, for sure.

P.S. Ry, thanks for the goodies.

Have a whole lot of love for Opera. It was the first Argento I got to see on the big screen and although I think Suspiria is a clasier affair, Opera still does it for me. Its nihilism, its wildly inappropriate (but brilliantly effective) heavy metal interludes and Simonetti's lush "Black Notes" score cue, the savage violence and the audacious camera work. Plus it's a pretty nifty murder "mystery" as well.

Yup, not the better picture, but more of a favourite. though pale in comparison to Inferno and Deep Red (again, subjectively)

No prob! Wow, I'm still always amazed how fast you chaps get something from me while stuff I ship to my folks on the East Coast moves at a snail's pace.

The postal service knows not to fuck with the limey geek contingent.

I think tonally Suspiria holds together better, where Opera has some great highs, but some low points, and a weaker resolution.

But it has titty.

'I'd like to do a show where I rid the world of all these fevered egos that are tainting our collective unconscious.'

'Will there be titty?'

"and what will the titties do?"
Why...surely...they will jiggle.

'GENIUS! GIVE THAT MAN ANOTHER CHECK!'

My regular-job-job-type-job rings scarily true to this.

strax gets paid to review titties?

God, if only...(shut it, Butane!)

No I work in DVD marketing which means the more tits in it, the better for the sales team. Allegedly.

Consequently, we're always after the tits angle.

So it's for work. Honestly.

Absolutely. My Argento list goes:

1. Deep Red at the very top

2. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage

3. Tenebrae

4. The seriously underrated (even by the lead actress) Phenomena

5. Suspiria

With maybe Opera and Inferno bubbling under.

I'm in a monority, but I'd put Four Flies... in above Bird... and sneak on Inferno as my number 3.

Why is it when sub par Argento gets brought up no one ever sticks it to Cat O'Nine Tails with its "worst ever train-track death" lunacy ?

I'd like to give E-high fives to my boys on the Hicks bit. Totally perfect internet geekery.
