So who's a fan of this ghostly masterpiece?

When I have more time I'll tell you something REALLY cool about the stage play version...
Ooooooh yeah, this is one creepy, and yes, scary movie.
Highly recommended!!!

There's no gore or chainsaw weilding aliens, but it is one hell of an effective scary movie.

I dare you to watch it at night with the lights off.

A firend of mine talked this up for about a year before I finally found it. Fucking awesome.
I blind bought this about a year ago. I hadn't really heard anything about it except that it was a ghost movie. I love watching movies without knowing anything about them. I was not disappointed in the least...creepy little flick this one.
Jeez, I'll have to watch this tonight!

Hey, Addix, I noticed on another thread you said you bought this on DVD? Was it region 2? Granted I didn't look very hard, but all I was able to get was a VHS copy. I haven't popped it in yet as I've said, but if I do--and the quality is shitty--AND I know I can find a DVD of it somewhere, sometime, I'll stop watching it and wait till I grab the DVD.

Gotta love Nigel Kneale.

I have a Region 1 DVD that I got from bestbuy.com (I think...I'll go double check that they have it). It's bare bones and not the prettiest thing you've ever seen, but it's better than VHS.

Edit: Holy shit! It seems to have gone OOP since I bought it or something. I got it for $20 from Best Buy and now the lowest priced DVD on amazon.com is $79.99. Damn...if only I had a DVD burner, I would sell my copy. I won't do it unless I have a copy for myself first though...I sold one rare OOP box set (the Puppet Master box set if you're curious) without copying first and I still regret it. This one I would definitely regret not having.

Yeah I got the video on Ebay, but its just a copy someone made. It was only like $12.

Damn. I'm thinking that maybe I should take my birthday money to buy a DVD drive for my computer so I can rip this DVD and share it out or something. It's a great movie and it'll be a shame if no one can get it.
Now normally I don't condone piracy, but 80 bucks for a dvd? That's just insane!!

Hell, I'd offer up the use of my dvd writer just so people can see the movie.
WOMAN IN BLACK a favorite of mine too .... The atmosphere is genuinely creepy and sincere .... Great film and a great non-cop out ending ....
has anyone read the book by susan hill? how does it compare to the movie?

i'm really new to kneale's work and i must say i'm looking forward to seeing this and the stone tape.

Don't forget the Quatermass movies and one of my favorites, The Abominable Snowman with Peter Cushing.

I only really condone (and participate in) piracy when it is pretty much the only way I can get a damn movie (if/when the movie does become available, I still buy the DVD). If there was ever a near perfect case of that...this is it.

Show of hands please

Just out of curiosity, if I were to buy a DVD drive (I've been meaning to do it anyways) so I can rip this, how many people would need a copy? Since I would be ripping it from an original DVD, the copies would be damn near DVD quality (so this includes you too Doc).

There would be few ways that you could get it.

1) I will rip it into avi format and then re-encode the movie as an MPEG-2 and burn it as an SVCD. The process would take a couple of days, but it could be played in many DVD players. You can check here to see if your player supports SVCD format. If you need a PAL SVCD, I can also convert it from NTSC to PAL.

2) If your player doesn't support SVCD, but will support VCD (most newer players do), I can re-encode the file as an MPEG-1 and burn it as a VCD. You would lose some of the picture quality though (not too bad...still usually better than VHS...especially a second or third generation VHS copy (Doc )).

3) I will also release the avi file for download on eMule. You could download it and either watch it on your computer or do the encoding yourself so that you can play it in your DVD player.

They don't seem to be as big of assholes when it comes to getting nabbed sharing movies as they are with music...not yet anyways. It seems that only the larger American companies (Paramount, MGM, etc.) are going after people at all, and all they do is send a letter to your ISP. Your ISP in turn sends you a letter saying that you need to remove the file in x number of days or your service will be cut off. You sign a thing saying that you deleted the movie and that's it. I'm not speaking from experience (*knocks on wood*), but that has been the way it's been handled in all the cases I know of. Luckily none of the movies I share, with the exception of Darkness and Los Sin Nombre, have American distributors (I only have hard to find Asian stuff for the most part) so I should be ok (*knocks on wood*...again).
Well Addix, my lawyer says I can't answer your question one way or the other, but just allow me to say in a perfectly hypothetical situation that I HAVEN'T seen "The Woman in Black," and WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO SEE it, theorhetically, of course.

*nudge-nudge, wink-wink*

Say no more...
Add me to the list of VERY much like to see it.

Also hypothetically, what about an .ISO of the whole dvd for those people with a dvd writer?
Addix

Since the movie is out of print a company would be hard pressed to take you to court over piracy. The reason ROMs are so popular (and legal) on the internet is because the companies can't make money off of them anyways so they could care less what's happening.

That said, I would definitely buy a copy if you ripped a DVD for me.

I'm not sure if the software I normally use can do that, but I'm sure I either have (or can find) the software to do it without much problem.

They aren't for sale.

Of course if someone or another wanted to help me cover postage and stuff I wouldn't complain, but I don't expect any money.
I owe you some postage for another care package you sent, so I'll be glad to chip in $5 or whatever you think is fair.

You're a credit to your country. I mean that.

Addix,

I would be very interested in a copy of The Woman in Black on VCD. Unfortunately, my DVD player does not support SVCD format.

Let me know what I need to do...

Thanks,

Chock me up as another that would love a copy and I, as well, owe you for one of your past care packages as well. So there is no problem throwing postage your way..

Thanks for the offer...

Oh, I would loooove, love my own copy of this movie.
Of course i would cover shipping if it ever came to that.

Addix, I don't know if this would apply to what we are talking about, but just in case:

http://news.com.com/2100-1026_3-5106...l?tag=nefd_top

I know they specify pre-release movies, but who knows where this action will lead.

Just something to read...

Did you also check to see if it would play VCDs? If not, check and see if it does. VCD is a much more widely supported format...if your DVD player was made within the past year or two, it should play them. If you are still out of luck, you could always play it on your computer (shitty...I know).

Count me in if you need some cash for postage, or anything else. I'd be more than happy to help out to see this movie.

Thanks for the link. I'll have to keep an eye on that just in case. That's strictly concerning films that haven't been released yet (rips of screener DVDs, etc), so I'm not too worried about it.
Well I'd say the interest is definitely there, so I'm going to go ahead and pick up a DVD drive either tonight after work or tomorrow. Give me a couple of days to do the technical type stuff, and I should be ready to start sending them out.

For those that want to pitch towards covering my postage costs and stuff, I guess the easiest way to do it would be through Paypal (rgenovese@swri.org). To those who do help, THANK YOU!! I really appreciate it. Sending out a movie here and there isn't a big deal, but it seems like this is going to be on a bit of a bigger scale. For those who choose not to, seriously don't worry about it...I'm not going to. I just saw this as an opportunity to help out my fellow fiends.

However, I am seriously considering throwing a couple of copies up on eBay just to see what happens. Hell, if people are willing to pay like $20 for a crappy VHS dub, I'd say that charging 10 or 15 bucks for a much higher quality copy would be reasonable.

The Woman in Black

Hi Addix,

I typed in my DVD player (Samsung M101) in the link you provided a few posts earlier. According to that web site, it supports VCD but not SVCD. I purchased a few "bootleg" DVDs off of ebay a couple months back and they seemed to play just fine. I believe they were in the VCD format. I bought the DVD player about a year ago. Thanks for the dvdhelp web site. It's great being able to search on a player and find out all the formats that are supported. Eventually I want to purchase a region-free DVD player so this web site will help tremendously.

I also have a crap DVD/VHS combo machine made by Sylvania that I think can play VCD too.

I can cover the cost of shipping as well.

Let me know if I need to do anything.

Thanks,
-CB

Before you shell out the money on a region free player, check that same site to see if there is a hack for your player. Go to DVD Hacks on the left hand side of the screen. The one for my player was literally 4 button presses on the remote control and I was region free...and it works beautifully.

The Woman in Black

Hi Addix,

Thanks again for the info.

How much should I put on PayPal for the shipping?

Let me know...

-CB
I'm going to just send them out in the Priority Mail flat rate envelops (go go free shipping supplies!! ) so postage is going to cost me $3.85.

Edit: I do have one request. If you send me a payment, make sure you let me know who you are on the boards (more of a curiosity thing than anything ) and let me know what format you want the movie sent in. Just put the info in the message space.

If you don't send payment, please send me your address and the format you need by PM. Again, if you can't or don't want to pay, don't worry about it. I won't think any less of you and I'm going to keep all of this confidential.

Btw, I may end up just biting the bullet and springing for the DVD burner. If I do that, you will also have a DVD-R option (gee...I wonder what everyone is going to pick ). I'll let you know if I can do that or not when I know for sure.
Well I went ahead and got myself a shiny new DVD writer for my birthday, so DVD-R copies will also be available. One catch though...if you want a DVD-R copy you have to give me something for it. Those things are fucking expensive!! I'm still not going to set a price, just please be reasonable about it (like $5 maybe?). I was fully aware that I was going to be out some money by doing this when I made the offer (and I honestly don't care...to me it's worth it), but if I can avoid being out a ridiculous amount of money that would be very cool.

RalphWiggum: I'm already going to send you a DVD-R, so you don't need to bother with requesting one. Thanks again!

One more thing. I've decided to go ahead and give eBay a try. Hell, if I have the fucking holy grail of DVDs, it would be a serious waste not to. Plus I'm kind of sickened by seeing all of these people having to pay $20+ for a freakin' VHS dub. Cashing in a bit because you have the good fortune of having a rare movie is one thing...ripping people off is another. I think charging $20-25 for a DVD copy is reasonable in this situation. If all goes well, I'll make a little bit of money without feeling like I just raped and pillaged the innocents and they will get a pretty damn good deal (considering the alternatives). What do you guys think?

On to a little favor. Could one of you who have already seen this movie write me up a good description of it for my eBay listing? I'm just not very articulate...ok that's sugarcoating it a bit...I fucking suck at writing. You will of course be rewarded for your contribution...with a free DVD-R upgrade and your choice of another one or two of the movies that I have available on SVCD. Or, if you are willing to wait an extra day or two, I could make you a copy of anything in my DVD collection.

My VCD/SVCD list:

VCD

Bangkok Haunted - High quality
St. John's Wort - Decent quality
Kairo - High quality

SVCD

A Tale of Two Sisters - Near (if not) perfect quality (NTSC)
Wild Zero - Decent quality (NTSC)
Undead - Excellent quality (NTSC)
The Park - Good quality (NTSC??)
My Little Eye - Excellent quality (PAL)
Darkness - Near DVD quality (PAL)
Ghostwatch - Very good quality (PAL)
Los Sin Nombre - Excellent quality (PAL)
Fear of the Dark - Excellent quality (NTSC)
Whispering Corridors - Very good (NTSC)
Jigoku - Very good (NTSC??)
Phone - Very good (NTSC)
Ichi the Killer (uncut) - Very good (NTSC)
Tell Me Something - Very good (NTSC)
28 Days Later - Ok quality (PAL)
Pirates of the Caribbean - Excellent quality - (PAL)
Once Upon a Time in Mexico - Very good - (NTSC)
Kaidan (Kwaidan)

Sorry about the rambling guys...I'm done now. Hey, I'd like to see you take 40mg of d-amphetamine (yes by prescription...I ain't no speed freak) a fucking day and not get a little rambly.

Edit: Btw, if you guys would wait at least a couple of weeks before you start hawking copies of this on eBay yourselves, I would really appreciate it. Kind of a temporary gentleman's non-compete agreement if you will. Don't make me have to watermark this shit.

Got it and thanks!!

Ok, I'm going to work on getting the DVD-r requests that I have so far done tonight (since I can just direct copy them) and ready to be mailed out tomorrow. I did a test copy last night and it came out as an exact duplicate of my original. The DVD doesn't exactly have any special features or anything to begin with, but what little it does have (hahaha...meaning the screen selection crap) transferred over fine. Have I said "I LOVE MY NEW TOY!!" lately?

I have run into my first disappointment though. I have the Canadian SE DVD of Ginger Snaps (the one that is loaded to the gills with extras) and I tried to make a copy of it just to see if all the extras and stuff would copy over or not, but it was copy protected.

Sorry, I've been looking for Stone Tape myself. Just PM me with your address and let me know what format you want it in (VCD, SVCD or DVD-r). If you want to send me money through paypal use rgenovese@swri.org as my email address. If you do Paypal me, don't worry about the PM...just give me the information in the message block. The only format I am kind of "requiring" payment for is DVD-r because they are so damn expensive, but it's not a set price...whatever you think is fair.

Alright, I've got the following people's stuff ready to go...I just have to drop them off at the post office tomorrow during lunch.

Ralphwiggum
The Bat
mdamien13
rogueboy
DJ Creep

Ok, just a couple of things. First of all, please excuse the fact that I have the handwriting of a serial killer. Secondly, no you can't skip that annoying ass super long preview at the beginning...you have to fast forward through it. It's not a flaw in the burn or anything, those heartless tyrants really put that crap on the DVD that way.

Just so you know, this DVD is bare bones. All of the special features (which consists solely of Scene Selection...YAY!!) were transferred over.

DJ Creep: Don't blame me for where A Tale of Two Sisters is split...I got it that way. Apparently no one bothered to tell whoever did it that you don't split a movie in the middle of a frickin' conversation. Hell, if I had done it it would be on one disc to begin with.

PanhEaD: I need your address.

Standridge: Check your PMs.
Addix why would I blame you....you so rock in my book, in helping us all see movies we cannot get ahold of.

Now if I had a DVD burner..I would share any hard to find movies as well.

Thanks again!!!!!!

....Horror fans are the best fans, they actually care about movies...and this just proves it!!!
Hey Addix,
Sent you a pm regarding the Stone Tape and Woman in Black.
I know that there USED to be a thread devoted to this movie but I could not find it...

Just cause we were mentioning it in this thread...I FINALLY got my hands on a copy of the movie "DARKNESS"
(Thanks again to that person who is MORE than generous with the time and effort spent)

This was prob the best horror movie I have seen in two or three years...

You know when the planets just allign for you and everything goes right...That was Saturday night...

After spending a day at a collectable show getting in for free and scoring some really great deals on a butt load of hard to find dvds and posters. I got home and ordered take out from my fav place and sat on the couch and threw this movie in. I was in that mood for a good ghost story, the kind of mood where you dare the movie to be good, but at the same time keep your expectations low enough so you will not be let down. I was willing to let alot go- to enjoy this movie that I have waited over a year to see and a movie that came so highly recommended.
Turned off the lights, threw it in, (got by the first 30 seconds of svcd tracking trouble my dvd player gives me) and fell into this movie hard.

The first movie in a LONG time that actually physically gave me chills.

I usually watch movies and see where THIS shot might have worked better- or THAT scare was just cheap and if they left the music blare off- it might have been alot more effective on the creepy scale...

Well not this movie. It all worked on almost every level for me.

It hit a nerve with me. I have a thing about the dark so much like Blair Witch...It totally got to me.

The cinematography and lighting in this movie was beautiful. Much like the Nameless it def gave a very dark and moody atmosphere. The score was just as haunting. Only once relying on a jump scare it just added almost a low brooding uneasiness to the film...Leaving YOU to have to notice "what in this shot scares me?" and then finding it and it is even more frightening as it was there the whole time. (Much like Bill Johnsons "Don't Worry, It's Only your Imagination" for those lucky enough to see it) One scene in point was when Anna Paquin was on the phone in a well lit kitchen and we see the dining room in back of her in darkness. Well what you do not notice is that there are about 6 children sitting at that table watching her from the darkened room. Very disturbing scene as you are not bashed over the head to see it with close ups and musical swells. All just background...

Only complaint: The acting was a bit off.
The father was a little over the top, and the mom was pretty unrealistic. But Anna Paquin and the little brother were perfect. As was the grand father.

I could go on and on about how much I loved this movie...But will not.

If you are a ghost/haunted house movie lover as much as I am...Do whatever you have to do to try and get a copy of this movie.

It is not going to be for everyone. But those who stuck with and think that Session 9, the Changeling, and even Blair Witch are the classics that they are- this movie is for you.

Again-HUGE amount of thanks to the person who got me a copy...(Name withheld to avoid a rush to their email box )
