Ravenous

I noticed 'Ravenous' mentioned in a different thread so thought I'd see what others think about it. I rewatched it a few weeks ago and I think it's a really great flick. It's got the whole 'Dances with Wolves' cinematogrophy going but with cannibals. I love the final sequence. The stew was a nice touch as well.

I caught this opening night at the Ziegfield Theatre in New York City on a blustery winter night with a crowd that totaled maybe fifteen people (compared to the seating compacity of the theater, that's not a good number).

When I left, I was like, "What the fuck did I just watch? The answer I found? Perhaps one of the greatest cult films of the '90s. I use cult in the lightest sense of the word because you need a sizable, but obscure following, to constitute "cult."

Ravenous, perhaps, has a fanbase that could probably fill a small coffee shop.

It's just so fuckin' bizarre, hilarious, and grotesque yet, it sports some rockin' performances from all these great character actors, it has a memorable score, beautiful scenic photography, and a highly original premise.

Dig it? Yes, I do.

Hell yeah RR. Couldn't agree more with all that. More horror fans (or movie fans in general) need to see this movie. Definitely one of the best of the 90's.

I've loved this movie from the first time I saw it in the theaters years ago. I need to rewatch it too, it's been awhile.

Ravenous is one of my favorites. It's also one of the only movies I know of that every single person who has seen it (that I know or talk to anyways) absolutely loves it. It's a rare feat to be universally loved like that. It's too bad more people haven't seen it.

I love this movie. It's one of those flicks that I've always wanted to buy yet never get around too. Love the ending as well.
I think the main problem with Ravenous is that people just forget about it. Reading the post, it seems like everyone hasn't seen it in some time. I love the movie, but I always forget to mention it whenever someone asks me about what horror flicks I really like. It just has this forgettable quality to it, but as soon as people remember it, they remember a modern masterpiece.

Huge fan of Ravenous, one of the first DVDs I bought too (when it was like $29---I see it all the time now in Best Buys $6 rack!)

The trailers were kind of lame...but it's a hard movie to market. When my old theatre opened it I screened it at close the night before and was blown away! I put it in my biggest house (I had nothing else realy big at the time) and I think the most crowded it got was about 15 people at a time. It did however, make one person throw up---which I've never really understood, but the guy said it was the film, not that he was sick or anything.

Justa great feel to the whole film and very unique. I mentioned it in another thread, but the soundtrack's worth picking up to. There are some really choice tracks on it.

And I'm proud to own, as part of my movie memorablia over the years, Ravenous brand beef-jerky that was sent out as promo for the film. I have two or three left, I'd open one and eat it, but I'm afraid if I eat one...I'll forever craze more. Don't live to eat...eat to live.

Yes, definitely a great film. I caught it on video shortly after it came out in theaters and was knocked flat on my ass. But sadly it looks like it has ended Antonia Bird's career before it even really began. Whatever happened to that woman in the last few years? Last I heard she was rumored to direct some Dean R. Koontz novel. The horror genre could benefit immensely from her talents. Studios (or independet companies) need to give her another chance!

What a great movie this is! I love it!
When I show this to people, they either love it or they hate it. Those who hate it drop down a notch.

Another major fan, here. Watched it at the recommendation of someone who looked at me all bug-eyed in a video store and whispered with a voice I'm only used to hearing in church: "Do you want to see something completely different?"

I bought the film the next day.

I guess I'll be ordering a double mocha at the "Ravenous Cafe."

'Ravenous Cafe' nice.

I agree with the forgettability of this one. I saw it in theatres but as much as I thought it was an amazing horror film it completely slipped my mind. A few years ago I had an urge to watch it again but no freakin store carried it and noone even knew what the hell I was talkin about. I went to my local video rental store and had them check on the last rental time and it had been months since anyone had checked it out so I bought it from them for 5 bucks.

Very strange. Good to see all the love but what the hell happened to it? Most underrated?

Don't eat that jerky Doc. That could be a very rare item indeed someday if it ever makes a comeback or gets a sequel. (doubtful but it should get one)

I finally managed to see it this summer... and I loved it. It was much better than I had thought it would be... great performances from everyone...

But yes, it then slipps the mind. I haven't thought about it in a long time, but the second I saw this thread everything flowed back again.

I remember that the trailers for Ravenous made it look like a serious horror movie. Then when I went to it, the words 'Eat me' popped up on the screen with a wacky sound effect that set the mood perfectly. I thought it was a great movie and part of what I liked about it was that I wasn't expecting any of it. My favorite part was when the psycho chases the little preacher through the woods to the sounds of that strange hillbilly music. Hilarious!

I also love the movie. A real original in an age where such things are quite regrettably rare. Robert Carlyle's performance is fantastic.

Watch this and then watch Wendigo and tell me which one nails it.

I just checked the IMDB for Antonia Bird and all she's done since RAVENOUS are two TV movies. One of which has the "promising" title REHAB ...

Please, someone give this woman more genre work to do!

This is easily one of best horror films of the nineties.

I remember when the film came out, the trailers and adds didn't really rub me the right way. They all seemed kind of generic and never really tapped my interest. I forgot the movie existed.

Then it arrived on DVD and I decided to rent it and fell in love with the quirky tone and bizarre characters. I quickly bought it and have cherished the disc ever since. From the hillbilly music to the quirky characters and performances, it all seemed to hit me just right. It's a decidedly one of a kind film and I'm still utterly baffled as to how this thing got made.

I have a friend who has horrible taste in movies until he sat me down one night and made me watch Ravenous. I have only seen it once...as I had to pretty much squirm through most of it. I absolutely love it..but I felt very uncomfortable watching it, not like "watching Session 9 late at night by myself" kinda a way but more like a "oh my god will this movie please end before I want to eat my roomate!!! Kinda way. When we get together this movie pretty often comes up in the discussions..I remember fondly stumbling out of a local pub screaming "HE WAS LICKING ME!!!"
go back and watch this movie with this one thought...The best weapon against a crazy Cannibal is lumber

talk amongst yourselves

Awesome movie. Can't wait to watch 'er again.

While I wouldn't say that I love this film, I definitely liked it a lot. I listened to one of the commentary tracks on the DVD and they mentioned how disastrous the shoot really was. As I recall there were multiple directors for the filming, numerous script rewrites, producer disagreements, weather problems and they went over budget. It's a miracle the film was ever made.

yeah.. i remember hearing that too.. antonia took over after the original director bailed or soemthing..

thats my only beef with the film.. i think its noticeable when watching it. somethign is just a little bit off. the direction and pacing could have been tighter.. otherwise itd have been almost perfect..

Chalk me up in the "loved it" column (which is the only column so far). The soundtrack is beautiful. Been meaning to pick it up. Made me an instant Guy Pearce fan as well (reinforced by his performance in Memento).

That's a legend that generally deserves better treatment than it gets. Ravenous and (sadly enough) Marvel comics treated it much better (in my opinion) than, say, August Derleth did in his short story treatment.

No there's 2 columns. "loved it" and "liked it alot".

This is one I'd actually like to see brought back to the big screen at a dollar theatre or maybe as the Ravenous 10th year SE re-release.

Fantastic movie. Now that I think about it, it is one of the few Carlyle movies i lvoe and do not own yet. Would make for a great weekend film fest to watch ...

Ravenous
Plunkett and McClaine
Count of Monte Christo
Brotherhood of the Wolf

and finish with...

Cannibal: the Musical!
Well maybe it’s the fact that I am Canadian or that I have taste, but count me in the: “This movie had awesome potential if it wasn’t for the horrible, horrible musical score that ruined the whole movie and turn it into a horrible farce of a movie”.

Who the hell composed that music drugged cowboy clowns on PCP in a redneck carnival.

Here is a site suggestion for all those involved in the musical score; http://www.solutions4recovery.com/

Well if you’re still confused about my opinion, well count me in the: “I hated it, on account of the lame ass musical score”.

Cheers!

The movie reminded me a bit of a new style of Hammer, with less pedigree.

I think it was a nice idea to have it be a period piece.

A good movie.

The "he was licking me!" line cracks me up, no matter how many times I hear it.

This movie is 6 bucks at Bestbuy. I found it in the discount dvd shelf that's on the far left behind the tv/documentary dvds.

One of my all time favorites, from the setting to the acting to the music, man does it rock. Who knew accordions could be so EVIL sounding.

Accordions always sound evil.

A little late I know but I just bought this off ebay. Loved the flick I really do. Can't wait for it to arrive.
Love the score. wasn't Damon Albarn (Blur singer) involved?
I saw it when it first came out and loved it. I rented it a few weeks ago and forgot how good it is. It is for sure on my dvd want list.
Went to Best Buy through holiday rush JUST to buy this movie. Fought the crowds and came out triumphant.

Showed it to 2 friend, both now own it!

Just a great movie all around.
I remember wanting to see Ravenous so much back then that, when my local theater decided not to show the film, I paid nearly sixty bucks in all to get to Montreal and see the damn movie... with 6 or 7 other people in a 200-seats theater!!!

I never regretted spending this much for a movie as good as this. And I grabbed the DVD as soon as it was released.

It's sad to think however that, since that, no other non-festival film has ever done this to me again.
I just bought a copy of it for me and a friend for just $10
post #37 of 40
I finally got around to seeing this. What an odd movie. I really liked it though. As others have commented already the fun comes from really not have any idea on whats going to happen next.

I'm only guessing but this may be one of those rare movies where somebody actually sat down and wrote and submitted a whole well-written script rather than just blathering and fumbling around with ideas, concepts, stars and special effects.

Did Robert Caryle play the Wendigo guy? At the begining he reminded me of the little weasal thing that kept trying to eat Foghorn Leghorn in the old Warner Bros cartoons.

Just watched it again last night. Brilliant!

I could describe the movie in one word. Intense. There were so many parts of the movie that made me squirm a bit in my seat, from the way the 'hero' won his medal at the beginning, to the final fight at the end. It's a shock of a movie, and one I enjoyed.
Some how this movie slipped past me all these years. I ran across it while reading the best horror movies of the 90's thread. I rented it and was blown away. Top notch horror movie i would have to say. I can proudly say i now own the DVD!
