The Convent

Anyone seen this film? Its been sitting on the shelf of my local renter for months now and I finally brought myself to rent it. Maybe its because I had NO expectations for this movie, but I really enjoyed it.

It had some great humor to it and the gore was pretty good too. You could tell this movie was made for basically nothing, but it still plays really well. I really got a kick out of some of the characters too - Coolio's bad acting made it even better. For a movie this cheap it actually had pretty good cinematography as well.

What does everyone think?

There used to be five or six threads on this, and in each one I professed my unashamed love for it. It is teh funE. And Adrienne Barbeau makes a real case for herself as a Reggie Banister/Ash level zombie fighting badass, which is very good.

The commentaries on the DVD are a blast too. You can tell they had just as much fun with it as I did watching it. Thumbs up.

I'm the only one who didn't care for this and being the neagive nacy (as opposed to you positive pansies ) that I am I simply have to tall you all! I think I semi-chuckled once because of that Satanist but otherwise I thought it was boring mess. But everyone else LOVES the flick so I'm probably full of shit.

I saw this in the theater a few years back. This was before it's video release when the filmmakers were still looking for a distributor.
I had a great time and so did everyone else in the audience. The humor gets a little forced from time to time, but otherwise it was a blast. Some good performances and make-up effects. The goth chick is HOT, but then I'm partial to goth chicks.

I agree with you Wetbones. Overrated pile of ass this movie is.

I have seen this movie twice on tv. I like it, except the monsters look funny.

I'm a Mike Mendez mark, so yes, I like this one fine. Not as much as Real Killers, but it's definately fun.

Real Killers? I haven't seen that one yet - I'll have to check it out. Thanks.

I dig the movie a lot.

Good gore...obnoxious characters...you can't ask for more.

The characters were annoying, but I believe that was the whole point. The guy Frijole was a riot, and they needed to showcase him a lot more.

the Satanists were fucking hysterical, easily the best part of the movie.

Adrienne Barbeau is still hot (thank you HBO's Carnivale for showing some skin) and she plays the tough bitch pretty well.

The part with the motorcycle and guns was a bit goofy, but who cares. This was a fun movie that didn't take itself too seriously. It reminded me of Night of the Demons a little bit.

A fun little time was had.

You get an idea of what kind of movie it is early on when the kids are running through a suburban neighborhood, turn a corner, and sitting there is a huge matte painting of like the Bath Cathedral or something, which is the Convent. A huge fucking gothic cathedral within walking distance from suburban housing. Mendez at this point on the commentary laughs out loud and says, "Yes folks, we're putting the 'special' in special effects." Hilarious stuff.

Also the "flashback" to the demon possessed nuns running the Convent makes me smile every time.

Only thing I didn't like was the black-light effects, but that was minor. The Satanists were funny, the gore was good, Barbeau was a badass. I love this movie.

The satanists do a commentary too, in character. Not as funny as their movie roles, but still entertaining.

Personally, I could've done without the fluorescent Day-glo paint and rapid-head-shaking editing that was popular for about a minute.

Just rented this movie, and I'm firmly in the "this movie is great" camp. it was just fun, fun, fun. I saw the whole movie with this huge, stupid grin in my face.

I don't know why but I actually think it looks pretty cool. I think it works the same way as most of the demons in Buffy: they're cheesy and funny but there's something scary about them at the same time (remember the gentlemen in Buffy season 4?)

I don't typically go for the intentionally tongue-in-cheek horror flicks, but this one is fun. Adrienne Barbeau has never been better, and besides, it's got COOLIO in it, for Pete's sake!
