Here's where to talk about all things Hellboy, Rasputin, B.P.R.D., Abe, and Liz Sherman-related. Guillermo del Toro's movie isn't arriving until April 2nd from Sony, but you can talk about new photos, the trailer, posters, toys and more here.
Hurray! Finally a single thread for this stuff!

o.k.........to make it official.....

WHERE IS THE HELLBOY TRAILER!!! YAHOO!!! YOU COLD FICKLE BITCH!!!!
All right, I'll port this over from the "unofficial thread":

From what I've learned on a similar thread on the CHUD MAIN boards the HELLBOY trailer will appear online at the same time it premiers on "Access Hollywood". which should mean that we'll all be able to watch it ... in 4-5 hours ...

Forget that, I'll probably have to wait until the end of the program to see the damn thing. They'll probably be talking about Micheal Jackson the whole time, anyways.

I'll wait until Monday for the Quicktime release.

Most of that typical trailer shit is from the minds at Sony, I would hope. I can't imagine Guilllermo thinking smashing titles on the screen like so many other (bad) films have done is a great idea, and Sony's already going to have a bitch of a time convincing the general population to see this.
Well the trailer sounded awesome, I say that because lets face it you need a fucking magnifying glass to see what the hell is going on but I think I got the gist of it, any some are saying they got the x-men vibe but it reminded me more of the trailer to the new breed, get the dvd and watch that trailer im telling you that had to of used the same template.

How hard can it be to convince a majority Christian population to see a movie about Demons? I mean, they love demons! Especially the deep south. Anyway, the movie looks kick ass.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. First off though, I dug that trailer...ahhh to finally hear Ron Perleman's voice as Hellboy. Very cool. I agree with many above, I don't need the camera panning over the super cool logo behind all the text in yet another comic movie, but as you noted, that's just typical studio marekting dept stuff.

But I'm still almost in disbelief this movie's being made...or done as the case may be. Everytime I see a pic, or the poster, and now this trailer I'm like, "my god, Hellboy the movie is actually coming out!"

But I get worried...and don't want to be negative, but I really do wonder how much this film's gonna make. Will the general public have any interest in this? I mean, I love Hellboy, I'm just glad it's Del Toro who did it and I'll get to see it, but I'd like for it to be a big hit too. And I just don't know if that's gonna happen.

Ok, I'll stop being negative and just go watch that trailer again

I assume a "discussion" thread about a film that won't be released for a few months will be filled with speculation and vague hopes, as well as opinions based on ... umm .. well ... opinions ...

Why is everyone so gung-ho about this film ??? ... This being a horror fourm and all, I figure something as corny as this would meet with at least a little aprehension ...

Like I said, it won't be out for a while so this is said with very little info, but ... I dunno .. It just looks stupid .... Granted, I'm not the biggest supporter of comics being made into films, but even so, this thing reeks of so much of what I dislike about movies ...

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents, eventhough this seems to be a highly anticipated film and no one is gonna agreee ...
Another reason why elmie isn't my cup of tea...against adapting one of the greatest comic books of all time. Man!

So, I worked on this film in Pre-Production ( as a storyboard artist) for those of you who are new here. So I'm going on what I've seen from my own 2 eyes.

I can assure you that it's going to be a helluva lot of fun. Guillermo del Toro has put a lot of care into this film, more than I've seen in a long while. This film is in a similar position as The Lord of the Rings - the right filmmaker at the right time.

This initial trailer (which in the interest of fairness, I haven't seen yet) wasn't cut by del Toro, but by Sony Marketing. If you don't dig it, know that you'll be inundated with Hellboy material between now and 4/2/04 - there'll probably something that gets you going at some point.
*Edit*

The movie will kick the ass out from under the unexpecting

remember....that trailer isn't from the final cut

as beautiful as it is

Have you read the comic?

The League of Gentlemen comparisons sound about right... This is nothing I'd go out of my way to see.

Perlman is usually watchable though.

... in all honesty, not one in its entirety ....

But I really don't see what that has to do with the medium of film ... I mean, I love the Ramones and T Rex, but that doesn't mean I like car commercials ....

I think that, for me at least, certain comics make for interesting films ( ie GHOST WORLD ), however, comic or not, I'm just into the whole cheesy "character/superhero/McFarlane" bit .... TheMATRIXES, BLADES, STAR WARS, LORD OF THE RINGS, SPIDERMANS etc are just so forced to me that I can't get past the pretense ....

oh well
The trailer is far from great but it has some great scenes. The main problem I had with it is that it makes the film look like LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY MEN IN BLACK. Maybe that's a good idea when trying to sell the thing to Joe Average but then again, LEAGUE bombed ...

But as has been said above, this trailer doesn't come from GdT himself. It's not his idea of selling the film but that of the marketing monkeys at Sony.

Personally, I would have liked to get some information about Hellboy's origin. Footage from the nazi ritual where he is summoned and subsequently saved by the Allied Forces. That would've been cool. Well, maybe in a later trailer.

I loved Bruttenholm! The way he looks and talks is just perfect. Abe is great as well. Kroenen kicked ass. The flash of Rasputin was way to short! There was more footage of him in that clip from Comic Con that is up on AICN somewhere. As for Hellboy himself ... I love his voice and how good his facial expressions look. But the general texture of his skin is severely lacking and occasionally had a rubber suit look. Maybe that's because of the utterly crappy quality of Real Media so I'll kind of withold my final judgment until Quicktime comes around. The Liz stuff looks nice and Selma Blair is hot ... I think I remember seeing her in some sex comedy where she's blowing a guy and gets stuck because her braces catch on his penis piercing. Or something. It was pretty funny. Was that really her? Anyone know what that film was called? Some chicks dragged me to see it ...

The stuff I was most excited about after SJRs write up was of course the monster footage. Predictable this is what looks most unfinished of all the effects in the trailer. Especially Sammael looks very rough and sketchy. GdT has said that 70% of the effects in the trailer are unfinished and you did notice. But I dug how Sammael moved. Kind of like a cross between a crocodile and a tiger. I've been in love with that monster ever since I saw that Wayne Barlowe pre-production artwork years and years ago. And the tentacle at the end ... kick fucking ass!!! Tentacles just plain rule in all shapes and forms, even if they don't rape schoolgirls.

So, this are my thought about the trailer. As for why we discuss it here, dude, it's a film about a demon fighting Lovecraftian beasties! How could we not discuss it here and look forward to it? So what if it'll be PG-13 and not a total gory bloodbath? If you want that watch BLADE 2 again. HELLBOY will be a great monster flick that will appeal to pretty much all ages. Wich means it will make that much more money and the kids will get to see something actually cool for a change instead of SCARY MOVIE 3 or some other comedy crap.

Thanks for the siggage, Wetbones

This movie looks pretty set to kick my ass. Perlman rocks.

Well, he's NOT A SUPERHERO , but rather a Detective of the Paranormal. He doesn't fly. He beats the crap out of monsters. All the while, he fights his apparent destiny - to bring about Armageddon.

The source material transcends it's genre, believe me. This is why people get so excited about Hellboy. The art is head & shoulders above anything out there. The writing is head & shoulders above anything out there. Next time you're at your local Borders ( or whatever) pick up one of the collections and take a look at it. I think someone of your discerning taste will recognize what it has to offer.

Well I'm a recent Hellboy convert and this Englishman is jazzed to the max (yo ?) to be honest.

And - this is me being a neophyte comic guy - isn't Hellboy meant to be goofy ? The character, I mean. I found that to be part of his charm - too gruff to be "aw shucks", but in that affable kind of loveable grouch who happens to be the size of Poland ?

Am I off base ?

No, you be on base, dawg.

The beauty of Hellboy (the character, not the messageboard poster, who looks like a bag of spanners ) is that he's not some supercool hero. He's basically a guy with a big stone hand who can take a lot of damage. He's a blunt instrument, and his approach to solving problems usually boils down to hitting stuff. That's balanced out by Abe, who is the quiet meditative yin to Hellboy's yang.

There's a reason his catchphrase is "Aw, crap".
The best thing about being introduced to this to me was that the whole look and aesthetic is basically a thing of beauty. Something I'd never associated with "comics" I'd read as a kid. To see those frames translated to the screen as they so faithfully are, - from all reports, from those involved and observing alike - will be pretty much "the queen's tits".

YOU BASTARD!

A bag of spanners? (Spanner=Wrench for you non-Anglophiles)
You wish you had my girlish figure, you giant Cockney Ape!

And, yes - the bluntness of the character is totally his charm. He has a big gun, but he can't hit the broadside of a barn. In frustration, he always has to resort to the Right Hand of Doom...as he says "They always have to do it the hard way!"
The one thing Whitehead ain't (aside from foppish, demure and straight) is Cockney. He's one o'them northern twonks.
OK, how about a Giant Northern Ape, then?

How far North? Manchester? Liverpool? Glasgow? The North Sea? Is he a Brian Lumley Cthulu-esque Spawn from the darkest depths?

Well, I still like him. No matter what his pedigree.

...the bastard.

On a map, it's just to the right of the top of Wales (that pointy arsed bit sticking out on the left).

Aye, them's the darklands. They speak in tongues...the annoyingly affable cnuts.

Cheshire. It's like Fangorn Forest, only with lots of buildings. And people who aren't trees. Mostly clad in bright tracksuit bottoms. And very few Hobbits.

It's as cold as Cahadhras, though. But only because I'm from the South...

Fuckin' A. At work now and finally got a chance to see the trailer. Heading to the mall now to get some fresh boxer shorts.

Ahem, great trailer even if they played to that broad spectrum of viewers. Hellboy smashes car? Ow! That's some goooood cookin', ma!

"Behind this door...ancient evil."

I haven't had a geek-out feeling like this since high school.

That's because by all/most accounts LXG SUCKED. Everyone knew it would suck before it even came out. This movie will rock. I think it will be at the very least a modest success. Well no, actually I believe that it could be a BO smash very likely. If they market it right and I dearly hope they will, this will easily breech the $200 mil mark.

For fucks sake.... Is it possible for me to see this thing without it skipping and pausing. All I get is a freaking slide show. I want to see it damnit.

Ok... End Rant.

Is sounded cool though.

Ho. Lee. Shit.

I haven't read any of the comics yet *quickly ducks to avoid flying projectiles* but this trailer kicked ass.

Any of the comic fans out there want to recommend a good TPB I can pick up to read up on this one?

Boys #22 : Elmie can't get past the Pretense of Blade or Spider-Man, but likes Ghost World. Buddy, that is all you have is your pretentious movies to watch it would seem. If you don't like Blade, Spider-Man, Matrix, Hellboy etc. what are you doing here for the love of God man! I hate those people who only watch "high brow cinema." Why don't you go watch Amores Perros or Gosford Park.

... what am I doing here ??? ... I come to exchange opioions, learn about films and engage in discussion ... If a fan comes to a discussion board ( look it up if this term is unfamiliar ) for the sole purpose of surrounding him/herself with similar opinions, then that sorta defeats the purpose, doesn't it ???

SPIDER MAN was one of the worst films I have ever seen ... So what ??? ... I'm not suggesting my standards are higher than yours, I just think the film ( and those others mentioned ) are heartless and sterile ....

I suggest you hang around here more often and read all the threads, not just the ones you feel comfortable and familar with ...I know, I know, you are happy feeling comfortable and familar, that's why you enjoy those above mentioned films, but sometimes with a little searching, you might find something new to enjoy ...

Amores Perros can take a running jump tho, on that much we agree.

I have read a lot of comic book(mostly marvel, between years 79-93). I don't know Hellboy, I have seen him often, but never picked it up. The trailer don't do nothing for me(don't forget I like this kind of movies).

It didn't help that it was fucking pausing every time.

For now I won't go see it, I must be convince with another trailer. With LOXG, I liked the first trailer, but I really went beurk... after the second one. So there is still a chance.

If only peoples who know the Hellboy can appreciate the film, I think it won't make a lot of money. Comic book movies should be made to be a good film, not a good comic. Ask Mr. Singer.

How could Ghost World be pretentious? Don't use a word if you haven't looked up the definition. Have you even seen Amores Perros? It's thrilling, balls-to-the-wall-violent, well directed, and thoroughly kickass. I am not the biggets Gosford Park fan, but it's almost as if you just walked through a video store and wrote down titles of films you have never seen and saved them for a rainy day when you felt like posting a stupid, and uninformed rambling. I love The Matrix, Dawn of the Dead, The Apartment, 8 1/2, X2, Blade 2, Harold and Maude etc. It's not like a film fan is bound by a specific genre. I like good movies, and I also suffer from ADD. So what's your excuse?
