I saw the movie a few hours ago, and it was very nice looking. The completely computer generated monsters looked really good I thought. I also like how Del Toro brought back his Blade-2 yellow nights. The story confused the hell out of me mostly... and I wasn't sure if the plot was moving along at some parts... but then again I never read a Hellboy comic. Overall, I'd give the movie 4 out of 5 DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN!'s

Also, before they unmasked him, that ultimate assassin was cooler then a dozen Boba Fetts!

Yeah, I don't thinn Newark, New Jersey has the kind of architecture, but I could be wrong. To me it was quite obviously Prague.

I liked it. A lot. Monsters, great characters, monsters, cool (but not over-done) one-liners, and monsters. My only real complaint is I wish there had more of a variety of monsters, instead of just new hellhounds all the time.

One big thing, and I can't believe no one noticed this or mentioned it if they had; there's a shot when Hellboy is walking into a room, talking over his intercom thingy with someone, and the Right Hand of Doom is on his left hand. And it's not a quick cut, it's on screen for a few seconds at least. How does stuff like that get past everyone that worked on the final cut of the movie?

But yeah, great stuff, can't wait to see it again with hopefully more of a crowd. Judging by the amount of people posting to this thread, I'm guessing it ain't gonna hit #1...

Saw it last night with a sizable, but not packed, crowd.

A brief preface: I love Hellboy. The comics, the characters; Mignola, to me, has created a world that embodies everything a horror fan - who's a comic book nut too - would want in a monster hero.

That being said, I love what Guillermo's done. I can't help to think that the film is missing one little spark - and I can't put my finger on what that is - but hopefully that might be remedied when the director's cut comes about. For now, I've got to judge it on the theatrical release at hand.

Del Toro's made a genuine film with robust themes, wild action to make any monster fan go ga-ga, and above all terrific characters. Their emotions are real.

Perlman is an absolute standout. The energy between Hellboy and Prof. Broom is palpable, the father/son vibe that bridges them? Wholly believable. (I love the fact that Hellboy is "grounded.") Action, FX, color scheme, production design...all meticulously crafted and lovingly displayed. Marco Beltrami's score grew on me, especially the main theme. I thought it was strange that the Nick Cave song found its way into the film (it's appropriate though) because that very tune was also in Scream, also scored by Beltrami.

Going to check out Hellboy again for sure. It gets a four and a half out of five Dracs rating from me. Guillermo has found his place next to Michael Mann as my favorite director working today.

Sad news, folks ...

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/c...4-04-02&p=.htm

HELLBOY made a measly $8,780,000 on Friday, which means it'll probably make $25 mil. this weekend. It's way ahead of The Rock's WALKING TALL (#2) and Di$ney's HOME ON THE RANGE (#3) but considering the budget and the expectations I'm afraid this will be considered a bomb. BLADE 2 made almost $40 mil. on it's opening weekend so this will also be a step down for GdT box office wise.

Which means we can can kiss our sweet wet fanboy dreams about AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS goodbye.

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to PAN'S LABYRINTH as well and I'm glad Guillermo has it already set up to roll in Spain but damn, a big budget Lovecraft flick would have been sooo damn cool.

Hopefully this will be a good word of mouth flick like passion was, Hopefully it will have a good second weekend

Yeah, because if it drops 50-60% we can not only forget about ATMOM but also any potential HELLBOY sequels ...

And because of the studio's stupidity it will also bomb in the rest of the world. Not because the film is bad. Not because of shitty word of mouth. But because of a half-year delay, countless illegal downloads and imports of the US DVD. Bravo, Columbia/Sony/Revolution! You not only shot yourself in the foot with this one but in the head!

Let's not jump the gun here, folks.

Besides, it wasn't like Guillermo was on the cusp of doing ATMOM right away...

8.8 is not bad news.

I loved this movie. The whole Cthulu-Nazi vibe was great. And that was one WICKED ass assassin.

I think i can accept the idea of releasing Sammeal just for the sake of sowing confusion and destruction while planning your real plot. there is so much going on that Abe never even uses his powers at a few critical points that woudl ruin the master plans.

So there were a few holes, but as soemone who has never read the comics, the movie was a damn fine introduction for me.

But lets not compare this to Blade II. Sure, there are TONS of similarities. There are even a few similarities to BladeI i thought, like when HB is being lifted by the Cthonian at the end, with the grenades was very reminiscent of Blade 1, with the blood God and the belt of Vials.

But Blade II did well based on the success of Blade 1, and the name of Wesley Snipes. That is a HUGE pull for audiences. Plus it was R rated, which meant a lot of people will go early since they expect less kids to be there.

I think over time this will do fine.

From AICN:

AICN: But you also have (H.P. Lovecraft’s) AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, which is one of the most incredible horror stories ever written.

Guillermo del Toro: That is totally dependent on studio financing. If I’m lucky enough that the studio “gets” MOUNTAINS, then, by all means, I’ll do MOUNTAINS. But if it happens to be 1920’s, period, crazy-ass tentacle monsters that come from another dimension… there’s a moment where a character is praying as a preacher is approaching, and the preacher says, “Your God is as young as yesterday. My master was here way before.” Ultimately, all horror movies with monsters turn into aliens. This one doesn’t. This one stays ominous and existential all the way to the end. We’ll see what happens.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The situation is very similar to when BLADE 2 was released. GdT was getting ready to direct MEPHISTO'S BRIDGE (based on a pretty damn cool horror novel titled SPANKY by Christopher Fowler) but he was also trying to get HELLBOY made. And HELLBOY was his priority, it just didn't seem likely to get the go ahead. When it did, Guillermo shelved MEPHISTO'S BRIDGE and jumped onto HELLBOY.

Same thing right now. He has PAN'S LABYRINTH ready to go in Spain but he will only do that if Dreamworks passes on his MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS script. MOM is the priority, PAN'S LABYRINTH is merely an insurance pollicy.

That answer shows no indication that the project was to immediately follow Hellboy or Pan's Labyrinth, or whatever else he may do next.

I'm not going to speculate on how Hellboy is going to affect AtMoM or anything else he may do in the future. Not at this point.

I just think it's a bit batty to throw up our hands and jump the gun with assumptions after Friday numbers come in. That's all.
I liked it, but did not love it as much as most of you. I thought that it was well made and that Perlman was great, but something seemed a little flat to me. I have never read the comics and maybe that is part of the reason that I don't feel much of an attachment to the film. I did think that the make up effects were great, but did not like the CGI eye stuff that was done on the nazi. I did love his body on the table, though. Great design work. I liked the human elements of Hellboy and did enjoy the film. I would give it about a 7.0 out of 10.

Exactly. Especially seeing as if Hellboy did have an opening weekend in the $25 million range, it'd be a damn good opening, not a disappointment. This is a movie based on a little known (for all intents and purposes, downright obscure) comic character, starring a little known actor, and by a director who isn't yet a "name" director outside of cult circles. This isn't an easy sell by any means (even the name is more than a little goofy) so for it to open well at all is some kind of triumph.

I have to say I loved the movie myself. It has its flaws, sure, but it's still cool as hell.
just saw it... It was alright...but i didn't have high expectations to begin with...nothing mind blowing. I felt like in the begininng i was watching the wolfenstein video game with the nazi's and shit. The demon was a spitting image of the 'Dagon' demon. the one liners were pretty bad though, he really was not very funny, i thought hellboy should have had better dialog, a bit cheesy sometimes. I liked the atmoshere though, but somethingsin the plot were ridculous. I thought Hellboy looked great. Although I have a hard time with comic book movies anyway.... hell the best comic movie made so far i thought was 'the hulk'.... so that shows where i fit in with most peoples attitude toward comic book movies, I'm on the other side, cause most people hate that film. i give Hellboy, 2 3/4 stars out of five.
Well, the good news is that HELLBOY made #1 at the box office this weekend. The bad news is that it grossed a mere $23.5 million, thereby not even making back its marketing budget ($25 million). I guess it's not a total disaster and maybe I really was stupid to expect this film to be a big success but I can't help feeling disappointed. Let's hope it doesn't drop like a stone by next week ... I think HELLBOY has the chance to do OK for the next two weeks because next week's releases are hardly genre fare. The week after that it'll be goodbye for the big red guy as THE PUNISHER and KILL BILL 2 will stomp the competition.

Maybe not in many cinemas but if you're going to a bigger US city you should definitely still find it playing here and there.

The cinemas I go to in Florida are pretty big! They're one in Downtown Disney and One in Universal studios Florida!

C'mon, Wetbones, think about it. A comic book movie starring pretty much no one that anyone knows based on a comic book no one's probably read. Making #1 at the box office with that working against you, even if it is shy $1.5 mil the cost of making it, shouldn't be considered a dissapointment. And I'm not speaking of how Hollywood thinks, but as fans of the director and the source material. It's fucking great if you ask me.

there's also the fact it could make it's budget back before end. then there are oversea's figures and dvd sales. so it could end up being pretty profitable. also it's based on a hardly popular comic. well popular among comics and animation fans but not among regular people.

still dont know if it'll garner it a sequel. if it does the budget might be lesser. i mean who wants to put up another 66 million for something that won't give you double return in the U.S.?

I mean anyone here who liked it would but studio's are different. i think we'll see a sequel another four to five yrs down the line but weirder things have happened.

Knowing nothing of Hellboy previous to seeing this flic, I've got to say that it was wonderful, I loved it.

HellBoy.... maybe Cthulhu Boy...

This movie was awesome... and I loved the entire Cthulhu mythos ref/ambiance.

I love the merman, Abe. What a fantastic creation.

I love the intro in the 1940’s.

8.5/10

Very cool. Go see it right now.

Cheers!
^agreed.

i've never read the comic so didn't know what to expect going into the film.

it's basically an "origin" story(which is usually the safest bet for the "first" movie).

i liked the character hellboy alot. a very different character and one the audience seemed to adhere to.

the part was written extremely well. i liked the cigar chomping and cats and baby ruth items which gave hellboy the humanity we could relate to.

the acting, special effects, direction, etc all top notch.

a fast moving and fun comic book movie. del toro nailed it.

recommended!
I've been a fan of both Del Toro and Mignola since their early days and in my opinion, both are geniuses in their fields. That being said I saw the movie yesterday and was left a little flat. The theater was about half full which was not bad for a sunday afternoon but the vibe I got from the crowd was really subdued. No one gasped, cheered, or clapped (including me) and only during a couple of times was laughter heard. When I went to see Blade 2 it felt like a riot was about to break out...people were excited. HB felt like the Hulk and I would give both of those films the same rating.
The film looked wonderful (Abe is perfect) and the Lovecraft elements are very cool, but it didn't seem to have those little touches that sets GdT's films apart. One liners and character splashes (he likes cigars and cats) don't really do it for me. This may have to do the fact that it was an origin story and the film maker has to try like hell to get all of the book's elements in the story. It may be that GdT loves the comic so much and wanted SOOO badley to translate it to the screen that he could not seperate himself from the material. Great comics build character slowly over months, years and sometimes decades but it's hard to do that in a comic book movie. It may just be a matter of taste, I loved the X-Men film series but didn't like Spiderman very much .
Hey, Big Red said, "Pamcakes," so I'm satisfied.

To preface, I've been a Hellboy fan since the very beginning, and it is simply my favorite comic ever. On the other hand (the smaller, non-stone one), this was a good movie. It lost some of the "epic-ness" of the comic and simplified the story some (no way in hell *ahem* that comic Hellboy is putting any hand in ANY keyhole for ANY REASON!), but that part at the beginning with the Nazi lamp floating around in the void and clanging against the big nasty, which then OPENED ITS EYE -- that scene alone convinced me that we were in good hands, and I sat back and enjoyed the ride. I'm hoping to see more character development and interaction in the DVD (seems Lord of the Rings has really set the stage for that type of filmmaking), but what was there was just enough to show us that these were real characters, and everything going on with them isn't emblazzoned on the screen to make it easy for us, ala Spielberg. I probably won't see it again because I'm saving up for a Toyota Prius, but I'll definitely be buying the DVD.

My only complaint is that it doesn't retain the Judeo-Christian/Devil and Hell universe of the comic. Sure, Bruttenholm is a Catholic ("among other things") in the film, but there is no real explanation why Hellboy looks like a demon when he appears to come from the Lovecraftian "void" rather than Hell itself. In the comic, Hellboy is literally the son of the Devil, and Hell is a real place full of demons who are trying to convince Hellboy to regain his crown. --As an aside, movie Hellboy with the full horns and flaming crown looked absolutely awesome!-- So my minor beef is that the film mythology is all Lovecraftian without mixing in any traditional God/Devil, which is all over the comic. Maybe we'll see some traditional folklore stuff in the sequel. If there IS a sequel.

There better the hell be a sequel.

Watched it today, don't ask me how or I'll tell you the dirty details about how I had to blow a magical hermaphrodite midget and promise to bear its children in order to travel 5 months into the future to the time when this film will be released across Europe ...

Was kinda disappointed by the first 2/3rds. Sammael, despite how cool he/they looked in the production artwork just didn't do it for me. Kroenen was the best part of that section of the film IMO.

The flick really kicked into gear when they're below the cemetary in Russia. Gigantic pendulum. Tentacles out of the sky. And despite all the drool inducing Lovecraftian imagery del Toro also brought the film home with a great emotional scene between Liz and Hellboy.

So yeah, I dug it quite a bit. Kinda sad they had to fade to black just when the Behemoth was about to tentacle-fuck Ilsa, though, but that's PG-13 for you, I guess ...

Might as well keep the good box office related news coming ...

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/c...4-04-09&p=.htm

HELLBOY was #2 this Friday, beat only by the resurrected THE PASSION. None of the new releases, including Di$ney's megabudgeted ALAMO were able to beat those two films. HELLBOY could make another $15 million this weekend. A sequel looks more and more likely.
I've done my part to ensure a sequel. I've just bought The Chained Coffin graphic novel and I'm ordering up that 18" Hellboy figure from Amazon soon. I must have Big Red on my shelf. I saw the movie again today and I liked it even more this time. Some little things that I missed the first time are much more clear to me now. This time I saw the jar from ‘The Devil's Backbone’ amongst the relics. I also saw the 'Left Hand of Doom' as Johnny pointed out earlier. I wonder if they will fix that scene for the DVD? Ah, that special edition DVD can't get here soon enough for me!

In the same scene, right next to the DEVIL'S BACKBONE embryo you can also spot the angel figure in which the CRONOS device is hidden. Cool stuff. Now you'll have to watch it a 3rd time ... Muahahaha!!!
I saw it and liked it overall. There wasn't anything revolutionary in story or look. The Lovecraft stuff was really neat and so was Kroenen. I haven't read the comic but Perlman really made the character. Abe Sapien was great but suddenly disappeared. Yes per the story it makes sense but it was sudden. I did have trouble making any sort of solid emotional attachment to anyone however and that removed me from the action. I do wish some more time would have been spent with Hellboy and his father. Seeing a softer side to their relationship was noticably absent and that would have helped with impact in some later scenes. I would also give it a 3 out of 5.
