Thir13en Ghosts

Thread Starter
Just finished watching for it for the god knows how many times.
When I first saw this, I thought it was ok. Not great, but not very good either. This time I hated it even more than ever. Has anyone seen the original? I liked it because you had to wear glasses to see the ghosts. Hehe. Eh, remakes usually always suck, with the exception of TCM.
I enjoyed it. I've always been a fan of Matthew Lillard and Tony Shalhoub.
The best part of that movie is when the lawyer gets cut in half(the long way).

Otherwise..........pretty basic stuff. Nothing new.
Nearly every aspect of this movie is retarded and makes no sense. There's no effort at all to build tension, characters, any kind of plot that makes sense, characters magically vanish with no explanation, the editing is awful, a lot of the make-up is awful, the list never fucking ends. I was kind of interested in the movie's set design but it's so horribly shot and edited that every single room ends up looking like the same glass box. Why the fuck does this haunted house movie take place inside the Lionsgate logo?

The only redeemable aspect is that, if you do a frame by frame, you can sort of see Shannon Elizabeth's bare titty jiggle. That was kinda fun.

Eh, this movie is terrible, but I can't hate Tony Shalhoub. I like watching him (For better or worse).
The movie itself is pretty dull. But I do admire just how much work went into the design of the picture. It's all pretty impressive for a b-movie like this. The props, the sets. All really top notch.

It's too bad nothing else in the film matches that kind of detail.
Yeah, I kinda like the attention to design, and how it felt like a video game with its bosses. It's irredeemable gimmicky schlock (in the Castle tradition) and I can't defend it much, but guilty pleasure? Sure.

Besides cementing my disdain for Lillard, this movie is worthless. It's not even fun to watch while drunk.

The real mystery is this: What made Hellraiser666 watch Th13irt33n Ghosts so many times?

Well, he'd probably already opened the Lament Configuration and Thirteen Ghosts was simply the next level of depravity and debauchery. As Pinhead states, "We have such sights to show you. First up? Thirteen Ghosts!!!"

I think this movie is a fine remake of a gimmickly, shlocky, shitty movie. It is mindlessly enjoyable and probably the best example of big studio B movie crap of the era. cut from the same cloth as the SCREAM franchise, but far less annoying thanks to the goofy personalities of the ghosts, and the wild sets. It's stupid all right, but better than the original to be sure (no big task)

Is that really a compliment?

Remember being excited for the Ghost House productions, but i don't think there's a one that's not garbage.

Besides loud and obnoxious, they're lifeless and empty. Too much so for the William Castle comparison to be an apt one.

I just don't see anything enjoyable about it. I figured it'd be dumb, but what enjoyment can be had? Some of the ghosts have interesting make-up, but none of them have anything resembling "personality". They're just invisible zombies. And there's not even the tension of a zombie movie because instead of people being slowly trapped and cornered by increasing number of ghosts, they show up at complete random, triggered by flashes of shitty editing.

I agree with Darkmite about it feeling like a video game, though. Pac-Man, to be specific.

I also think this movie owes as much to HELLRAISER as 13 GHOSTS. The whole house is like the Hellraiser cube deal thing. It also has a little bit of Jennifer Lopez THE CELL going for it. It's a real mess. You tend to forget there is a nice junkyard scene at the beginning too, since the rest of the movie is in the cube house. It's easy to hate this movie, but I would rather watch it than any other "90s Friends type horror shit" movie

Could you provide some examples? I have no idea what you're referring to here.

My gut says he's referring to the SCREAM movies, but I could be horrifically wrong.

Also, I'm kind of amazed that so many people are rushing to this film's defense. I always figured it was universally accepted that Th13t13een13 Ghosts was a piece of shit.
It is...apart from maybe the house/set itself.
THAT was fun, but doesn't eclipse the original.

NetFlixed.

I kid, I saw this when it came out in the theater's and I enjoyed it enough. Was it groundbreaking? No... but I'd like to think the character Tony Shalhoub played in this film was a corner stone of the Monk character.
I agree this film was terrible. I never saw the original & have no comparisons to make there, but the wasted potential in the remake itself made me want to scream. I would have liked to see at least a little more exploration of the "origins" of the ghosts themselves. That seemed like the most interesting aspect of this otherwise uninteresting film, and they let it slip through their fingers virtually untouched upon.
I hated this movie more than I can describe when it first came out. I don't remember it well enough to hate it anymore. The one think that irks me a little is when people say "sure it was shit but the set design was cool" I'd agree if it was a sci-fi or fantasy movie, but a great horror set should come furnished with something resembling atmosphere.

The movie did need more Wocka Wocka sound FX. If only.

But House on Haunted Hill kinda worked, right? A Stand up Double, at least?

Only because of Rush channeling Price. And a J Combs cameo.

I think the guy above is talking about "I know what you did last Summer" etc. There's no reason to bring 'Scream' into this thing (Unless we're talking Scream 3, a film that should be subtitled 'Contractual Obligation').

This is probably the worst of a bad bunch though, though thinking about it it might be neck and neck with 'The Haunting' as shittiest haunted house film. It makes 'House on Haunted Hill' look like High art (Though for the record, I found that film a lot of fun until it shit itself with the ending).

Totally agreed, which is why I'm still pretty curious as to what they were getting at.

Also, yeah, fuck The Haunting. That was the first time a "horror" movie actually made me angry.
I don't think 13 Ghosts is any good, but it's head and shoulders above The Haunting. It's not hyperbole to suggest The Haunting is one of the worse films of the 90's, and certainly a contender for biggest turd from a major studio.

There are degrees of shit, and like Jake said, The Haunting makes you actively pissed that you're watching it.

That was quite the spectacular career killing one two punch of Speed 2 and The Haunting for Jan De Bont.

QFT. And THE HAUNTING even had the benefit of Spielberg's (whatever it was... "uncredited executive producer") involvement and Liam Neeson. Very rarely am I ever scared by CGI (DRAG ME TO HELL being one of the rare exceptions), but it's not supposed to make me laugh during a scary movie. The original shames the remake every which way.
Thir13en Ghosts and The House on Haunted Hill are much fun. Way better than that p.o.s. The Haunting, which is one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Why???

When you can just watch American Pie and see Shannon Elizabeth masturbate, then why bother freeze framing for the titties here? She GIVES you the titties in American Pie, just as the princess chick in this movie gives you hers (although hers have scars on them; take that as you wish).
I remember very little about this film except that it was awful. I can't imagine anyone defending it.
I just wanted to jump in and bitch about The Haunting as well. It's an unbelievably bad film. Thir13en Ghosts at least is fun to type.

I'll take it as-read we're talking about the remake here.
