Hard Target - Page 2

Jesus Christ.  7 years later and still no Director's Cut?

An official disc with different cuts is ridiculously overdue. Can you imagine how good this shit would look on Blu-Ray?

What's the difference between the director's cut and the unrated cut?  From what I understand there's not just violence cuts in the R-Rated US version, but is the unrated cut you can get in Europe effectively the director's cut?

No, the  Director's cut is 116 minutes long and has never been released.

An "uncut" version of  HARD TARGET was released on dvd in Europe. I think it's about the same length as the US version. Here's what's different between the US cut and the Euro "uncut":

I echo the cry for Woo's intended cut fuck you Universal get on it.

I wonder if Woo even has any interest in going back to it. Doubtful, although I'd love to have it on disc.

Also my favorite American Woo film, Face/Off is still good fun(and the closest to his HK work), but has lost some of it's charm for me over the years.

"YOOOOU shuut know bayter!!!"

I wonder what Woo's intended SHOT COUNTS were.

In the R rated cut, Sven Ole Thorsen (aka "sorry bout the shirt" guy) gets shot a measly 12 times.

In the "unrated" cut, JC shoots him about 30 times.

I'm guessing Sven gets shot about 58-60 times in the Woo-approved director's cut.

This is the first time I've noticed that Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert were producers on this one.

I always liked Raimi's "Woo is to action as Hitchcock was to suspense".

He was a big fan and one of the people who encouraged Woo to come over to these shores. The "should've stayed in Hong Kong" crowd will tell you this was a mistake. But they are wrong of course, because Hard Target exists.

Sam Raimi quote I still remember from when he was promoting HARD TARGET (from Los Angeles Times or Fangoria/Gorezone, that I forget) in '93:

"It's John Woo at 70%, but John Woo at 70% is still better than most Hollywood action directors at 100%"

That's a great compliment, but I have to wonder if there's also a teenie weenie bit of annoyance there over MPAA resubmissions/emasculation.

It's a shame what happened to Yancy Butler later. Her alcoholism and everything. I actually was a fan of her WITCHBLADE Series.

It was odd to see her pop up somewhat randomly in Kick-Ass.

Where was she in Kick-Ass?

She played Red Mist's Mom in an early scene, when his family was introduced.

Thanks Felix. I know she looks way different now than she did in her Hard Target days, but yeah, I didn't recognize her at all.
