Coolest moments in cinema

Thread Starter
What are the ones that stand out for you.

I remember in 'Goodfellas' when the camera does that slow zoom on Deniro and 'Sunshine of your love' is playing. I thought that was so fucking cool.

In 'A Few Dollars More' when Clint kills those three bandits after saying 'who says I was joking'. The music in that scene was so eerie and the way he motions for them to get up.

At the end of 'The Wild Bunch' when they kill the general and everybody freezes. Pike looks around, sees the german and his face basically says 'Fuck It' and he shoots him and all hell breaks loose.

Anyone got any?

Laurence blowing out that match....

Scarlett staring at the sunset with her father....

Gandalf riding down the hill with the Rohiriim at Helm's Deep

Luke staring at the twin sunset in Star Wars with John Williams' score playing.

Luke getting fried by the Emperor in ROTJ, saying "Father..please" and then Darth finally deciding to do something, lifts the Emperor up, Darth gets electrified and we see that he really is "more machine now than man."

Sean Connery in Dr. No, sitting around the game table, uttering those immortal words, "Bond.......James Bond." with the Bond music playing after.

First time we see Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Clarice is walking down the hill after getting all these warnings from the jailer and we see that Hannibal is standing there waiting for her and says in a chilling voice, "Good Morning".

That was definitely an "OMG WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" type plot twist in the movie. Definitely one of several in the movie that kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time.

For A Fistful of Dollars - the "bullet proof vest" showdown.

Equilibrium - The puppy-in-the-trunk shootout.

The hotel scene with Slimer in the banquet room. All around awesome scene, with the perfect blend of comedy and excitment.

The Suspects walking in for their line-up.

Bogie handing over the Maltese Falcon, with the words "That's the stuff that dreams are made of."

Indy stepping out from the shadows after disarming a traitor who was about to shoot him.

Max walks over to the rig and tanker on its side, and instead of the fuel rushing out of the tap it's simple dirt instead, the fuel in reality having gone with the women, children and the elderly.

And

Tequila sliding down the stairs with a gun in each hand blasting away the gangsters.

Tequila doing a flip over the powder than landing, with his gun point blank from the triads face. He looks like a ghost because he is covered in powder. The triad just killed his partner, so almost without hesitation he pulls the trigger, thereby making his face white and red.

Every scene in HK The Mission.

The Usual Suspects... when Kilnt begins to walk without the limp at the end.

T2... when Arnold is walking with the box of roses and pulls the shotgun out.

Fellowship... Boromir getting back up after the first and second arrows.

just a few of my favorites.

Rambo stealth-killing all those russkie soldiers in Rambo: First Blood part 2.
trying to think of moments, and not just lines.

one of my favorites is in the matrix, the climactic scene where we realize neo is the one... only not because the virtually invincible agents can't hurt him, or because bullets can't touch him, but because of his passivity while it's all going on. that's why that scene is so powerful. he's like super gandhi. plus that wagnerish music playing in the background.

so many moments in goodfellas...
I only recently realized just how cool that moment with deniro is when "sunshine of your love" plays... I had never noticed the look on his face, we get a bit of the ol' bickle. I think my wife thought I was nuts at how giddy I got when I saw that.

"Rambo - First Blood":

When he takes out all the officers in the forrest and we can hear their (very authentic) screams... "Will...OMG...Wiiiiilll...."

"Heat":

The gun battle

"Saving Private Ryan":

Opening Scene

"Shawshank Redemption":

The empty cell...

The Union Station shootout in The Untouchables, with Andy Garcia sliding under the baby carriage just in time to prevent catastrophe. This works as both an utterly cool sequence on its own as well as homage to a classic film.

In Star Trek II, just before Khan gets his molecules scattered, he intones: "Khan: From hell's heart, I stab at thee. For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee." KABOOM!

The scene in Pulp Fiction where Butch Coolidge spots a samurai sword hanging above the door on his way out, grabs it, and then heads back downstairs to teach two rednecks and a gimp the lesson of lifetime.

The opening scene of Once Upon A Time In The West, all ten minutes of it, culminating in Bronson facing down three gunmen.

And in Escape From New York, when Snake Plissken plants the nail-studded baseball bat in his opponent's head and is greeted with chants of "Snake! Snake! Snake!"
The brutal murder of the printer/photocopier in OFFICE SPACE.
Stuber beat me to the ending of The Usual Suspects. That was classic.

The restaurant scene in La Femme Nikita.

Damon taking out the 4 guys in the embassy in The Bourne Identity. And Statham kicking ass in the house after his car blows up in The Transporter.

Travolta's opening monlogue of Swordfish (see sig) - taking time out from his op to discuss filmmaking - very cool.

Desperado - Antonio and nameless scumbag racing to find a loaded gun and then a quick snap of the neck with an exasperated "FUCK YA!"

Classic.

Also, Die Hard - The final face-off between McClane and Hans, with the laughing, the shot, and the look on Bruce's face when he says "Happy Trails, Hans."
2 scenes from The Last Samurai:
1. The Samurai slowly ride into Tokyo while everyone flees or bows.
2. The final charge of the Samurai.

Gladiator: Maximus reveals his identity to Commodus.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture - When the Enterprise is entering V'Ger. No modern special effect will ever come close to the creativity and uniqueness of that reveal.

Bridge on the River Kwai - The climax. I won't bother giving it away, but I'm sure you guys know what I mean if you've seen it. I can't remember a time when I couldn't decide which person I should be cheering for - absolutely ingenious.

Vertigo - Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak near the shore. No explanation needed.

The Neverending Story - When Atreyu is flying with Falkor, and you see all those wide shots of the environment with the kick-ass music. Even though it's more of a nostalgia thing, I still get goosebumps each time I see it.

Akira - MUTATION!!!
A ditto on Desperado.

"There he was and in he walked. He was dark too. I don't mean dark-skinned. No, this was different. It was if he was always walking in a shadow. I mean every step he took toward the light, just when you thought his face was about to be revealed...it wasn't. It was as if the lights dimmed, just for him. "
Seven - the end.

Angel Heart - when he realizes who he is.

Lost in Translation - the whole damn movie.

Alien - when it uncurls in the escape pod.
I'm afraid that the coolest thing I've seen in recent memory would have to be Morpheus taking out a speeding S.U.V. with a katana. That shot of him standing in front of it right before he steps out of the way, in particular. Coolgasm.

Slowly seeing a little speck of black turn into Lawrence as he emerges from the desert after risking his life to save a friend and then seeing the kid on the camel going all crazy screaming AURENS AURENS!!

Pure cinema bliss.

Glory- Shaw's "Come on 54th!!" right before getting gunned down by seccesh.

Boogie Nights- The SLOW push into Marky Mark while Sister Christian is playing and the firecrackers are going off and Dirk just looks like wherever he is it isn't anywhere in the vicinity of planet Earth.

Repo Man- "What about our relationship?" "Fuck that!" and proceed to fly away in a glowing Malibu.

Gladiator- Maximus wiping out the entire arena then asking the crowd if they're not entertained.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly- The showdown. The cemetary. That's what a classic movie is all about.

Fellowship of the Ring- As someone already said, Boromir getting up not once, but twice after being shot with huge orc arrows. Damned if it doesn't make me cry every time though.

Can't Hardly Wait- Paradise City, after he falls down and jumps back up, the microphone just kind of flys up as if summoned by the force. I love it and I don't know why.

The Phantom Menace- Obi-Wan's little anxious bounce right before that force field clicks off and he runs into one of the coolest sword fights ever.

The Princess Bride- Inigo Montoya realizing his life's goal.

Conan the Barbarian- Every moment! Particularly though, the funeral pyre. "He's Conan. Cimmerian. He won't cry, so I cry for him."

Ferris Bueller's Day Off- The entire Art Institue scene. I love it to death.

Not at all a comprehensive list, but just some things off the top of my head.
Scanners: First head explosion.

Jacob's Ladder: The trip through the hospital on the gourney.

Repo Man: "I blame....society...".
Neo dodging bullets in slo-mo for the first time.

Snatch: the boxing scene.
The coin pushed across the concrete from the shockwave a second before the explosion in Jacob's Ladder. I haven't seen it since it was in theatres, but that scene has stuck in my head for years.

Deckard insisting Rachel stick around in Blade Runner. Most sexy.

Salieri hearing Mozart's music in his head as he ruffles through the sheet music Mozart's wife has brought him.

John Nash unravelling the patterns in the numbers the CIA is asking him to decode in A Beautiful Mind. Very clever.

Popping pills and chasing them with beer in The Roadhouse in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. "I am ze Great Went." "I am the muffin." I don't know much about art, but I know what I like, and I like Twin Peaks.

The trip to Ben's in Blue Velvet is pretty interesting too.

When Optimus Prime jumps up from semi mode to robot and kicks Megatrons ass in Autobot city. Worshipped everything transformer up to that point in my life. Everything was downhill after that till I discovered girls (about 3 months). It was still special though.

good choices!

you killed my father, prepare to die.

Gladiator: When Maximus reveals himself to Commodus in the arena after he's supposed to be dead.

ROTJ: "I am a Jedi, like my father before me"

TTT: "...Until I threw down my opponent and smote his ruin on the mountain side" (or something to that effect)

X2: When Jean leaves the jet to try and stop the water long enough for them to take off....Just an impressive display of her power.

ESM: "Luke, I am your father"...duh

TPM: When Obi-Wan gets pissed after Qui-Gon's death and proceeds to whip the shit out of Darth Maul...best lightsaber duel ever.

FOTR: EE: There's a part in the Council of Elrond scene right after Frodo says "I will take it...I will take the ring to Mordor". The reaction shot from Gandalf is simply one of my favorite moments in any film, ever. It really is the little things that make that trilogy so great. In that one shot, you can see all the desparation and all the "knowing this is a longshot and he's probably going to die" and it sets up the seriousness of this quest perfectly. Gandalf knows that the "quest will claim his life" and the look he has is as if he's just heard that his only son has volunteered to join the Normandy invasion. It's just damn good acting, and shows off McKellan's ability. Great scene/shot.

I'll list more as I can think of them...I'm sure I will

Hey Fellas! What's Cooler than Being Cool? ICE-COLD!!

I agree with just about every single scene mentioned in this entire thread.

My Picks for the Coolest Moments in Cinema (with a detour into anime):

Cowboy Bebop - Just the whole damn TV series. Cool. Cooler than cool.

Desperado - The opening shootout in the bar (not the one narrated by Buscemi). Time stands still when I watch that either on TV or on tape (I haven't gotten the DVD yet).

The Matrix - Neo doing his Superman thing at the end. The roaring sound really sells the whole scene.

Can't Hardly Wait - The scene mentioned previously, along with the party being crashed by the police, and the farewell scene at the Train Station at the end. Nice to see the good guy get the girl.

Idle Hands - Any scene with Jessica Alba. Any death scene. Especially when the Hand crashes the Halloween dance.

Almost Famous -

"The only true currency in this bankrupt world...is what you share with someone else when you're uncool."

"'That groupie'? She was a Band-Aid! All she did was love your band. And you used her, all of you! You used her and threw her away! She almost died last night while you were with Bob Dylan. You guys, you're always talking about the fans, the fans, the fans; she was your biggest fan, and you threw her away! And if you can't see that, that's your biggest problem. And I love her! I love her!"

The Animatrix: Final Flight of the Osiris - The opening Dojo duel, and then Jue jumping, falling, and sprinting to deliver the package.

Big Trouble in Little China -

"Double or nothing, Jack."

The airport scene. The Chinese standoff in the alley. The rescue of the girls with green eyes (all the way from "WHAT WON'T COME OUT NO MORE?!" to Jack retrieving his truck and busting out of the place.

Hellboy - THE ENTIRE TRAILER.

Rush Hour - Both Lee's and Carter's intro scenes. The shootout at the restaurant in Chinatown, Lee takes back the little girl's necklace from the waitress (she screams as if he grabbed her breasts), and then the showdown in the L.A. convention center.

The Sandlot - Benny helps Smalls gain acceptance into the Sandlot, the fake drowning leading to the Big Kiss, the carnival puke-off, the fireworks scene, and then the entire "Get the Babe Ruth Ball back from the Beast" story arc. I'll never get tired of watching this flick.

They Live - Any scene with the sunglasses, the alley fight between Keith David (also in Carpenter's THE THING), and Rowdy Roddy Piper, and of course the scene where Nada states:

I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum.

Traffic - Any and every scene with Don Cheadle and Luis Guzman.

Spider-Man - The upside down kiss, Bonesaw being thrashed, the collage of scenes showing Peter's new life as Spider-Man, with people being interviewed about their impressions of him...

Dressed like a spider, he looks like a bug, we should all just give him ONE BIG HUG...look out! Here comes the Spider-Man...

...and then the final battle with the Green Goblin, from the Bridge to the Glider impalement.

Man... my memory is shit... The coolest moment in cinema that I can remember-having just seen it again recently-would have to be:

Ran - When Kurogane slices Lady Kaede a new one. Man, he was so badass in that film.
