World of Tomorrow!

nothing too interesting, but on Entertainment tonight I saw a quick clip from world of tomorrow.

And it looks really cool from the 2 secs I saw from it.

I think this will be the summers best film, next to Vanhelsing.

Ok now I'm just confused.

I've been itching to see this ever since I first read about it. And I've still yet to see a single frame of footage. But it does sound pretty neat.

Pretty cast, too.

So, if George Lucas shoots in front of a blue screen he's an evil man that has no regard for the charm and magic of cinema, but if some other guy shoots his whole film in front of a blue screen he's cool?
Well that depends on wether or not the other guys uses blue screen to have his hero having a rodeo session on a space cow

The anticipation for another Star Wars movie after 16 years and a period movie by a first-time director is a little different.

World of Tomorrow or Angelina Jolie trying out for PotC 2? You decide.

Otherwise: more fuzzy screen caps.

All we need is Billy Zane in tights!

This movie could suck just as bad as the blue screened horror of the SW's prequels.

But there's still hope. Besides, the only reason people harped on the over abundance of CG in the prequels is because the tonal shift from the OT, to the NT was far too great a leap.

I don't mind the special FX in those movies. It's the story, acting, characters and dialogue that killed it for me.

And if Skycaptain can get an A+ in all those fields. It'll be a winner. Plus the movie looks like a live action Miyazaki Film come to life. (More Laputa than anything else.) And that is A-Ok in my books

I like the idea of a period film with sci-fi elements. That's something fresh for a change. The technical aspects are secondary. IIRC the director chose the Way of the Blue Screen because otherwise the budget would've been 500 million $ or something.

PS: Jolie doesn't look disgusting in that picture. That has to be a first. Even her horrible silicone-filled, blow-up-lips are strangely in syc with the vibe of the film ...
I am just hoping if this is done well, someone will make a good adaptation of the game Crimson Skies. I love the old 30's serial vibe/alternative history. Anyone who has seen the footage, is the work better or as good as the Prequels? Despite the flaws in those films, the CGI is very, very good.

Good man, at least I'm not the only one who think Jolie is an absolute pig.

The film has a new title:

It's now called Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

The release of the film is no longer in May. It's now aiming for a date in the Summer of 2004.

Finally, the trailer premiered at AICN's Butt-Numb-a-Thon and should appear in theaters for everyone else in front of Paycheck.

Super neat idea.

Ah, Ms. Jolie. All woman, baby. Lose the tattoos and we'll talk.

So...what you're saying is, no one outside the internet is going to see this?

This is one of my most-anticipated flicks of next summer. I think only Hellboy really tops it. And those screencaps look great. The idea of a lavishly done old-fashioned SF adventure flick gets my guns firing. And hey, kids--it's not based on a pre-existing property!

Though I preferred just "World of Tomorrow". It straddled the line between modern and old-fashioned quite nicely. "Sky Captain" pitches it a little too far into corny territory.

No question, the film sounds awesome. However, that title change and the constent date-switching has me worried that it's appeal will be limited.
Saw a bit on Access Hollywood, looks very very awesome. I'll withhold further opinion til I see the whole thing in quicktime or on the big screen.

From what I gleaned (before that Seabiscuit stuff), it looked pretty awesome - the army of iron giants, the planes, the title sequence. Wow.

Can't wait for the trailer, and it sounds like they were using the Stargate theme in it.

Between the trailer for this and the teaser for Spidey 2...I'm starting to have some hope for a decent year. Now let's see if I can keep the faith...
The baddies have ornithopters. How cool is that?

The official site. Trailer will be up soon.
The shot of the cops lining up and pointing the tommy-guns has put this at number 3 most anticipated for next year.

Just beautiful.
Saw the trailer at Trilogy Tuesday tonight. It looks incredible -- sorta like Fritz Lang doing a James Bond movie. Hopefully they won't be using the Stargate theme in the finished flick, tho
post #26 of 71
Very cool. The FX looks a little too cheap, but the design and attention to detail is staggering. It felt like a live-action propaganda film mixed with the sensibilities of a B movie extravaganza.
The trailer got absolutely laughed out of the theatre I was at.
Yeah, but you're from Wisconsin.
I had Rocketeer flashbacks when I saw the trailer before ROTK.

My buddy said some of the mech stuff reminded him of Evangelion and the robot dude from Castle in the Sky (in addition to Iron Giant).

I was surprised the project was using such well known actors. Didn't Wired do an article about it? I don't recall Jolie being mentioned.
Surely the title change is just so people don't immediately confuse it with the other big SFX spectacle of the summer, Roland Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow ? Makes perfect sense. and it's kind of a neat title. Definitely of a piece.
The look is reminicent of Batman the animated series, the movie looks very cool.

They showed clips from the trailer last night on EXTRA. Looked to me visually like a cross between the old Fleischer Superman cartoons of the '40s and the Alec Baldwin Shadow movie with the sensibilities of a cliffhanger serial. I don't know. I got my doubts on how good this one just may actually be. There is a cheese factor that could very easily overtake this one.

This movie has a 'Millenium City' vibe, a la Alan Moore's Tom Strong comics... the blurb about Kerry Conran (the writer/director) on imdb is strange:

"Wrote a CGI program that allows him to shoot an entire movie against blue screens, and fill in the backgrounds with images. Having an already-existing 3-D storyboard of every scene in his computer, all he needs to do is replace the computer-generated figures with live actors, and he has finished his film."

Gives me the shivers, a la Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

This film could flop if the audience doesn't allow themselves to get swept away in the CG backgrounds.

If Skycaptain has been filmed entirely with bluescreen, an audience might miss that interaction with a "real" background. It all depends on if the blending of human characters with the backgrounds fit or if it's too jarring to accept.

But if this is successful, it could open up a whole new door of possibilities for future endeavors.

I'm hoping this is a great movie, with a great plot, characters. Action and stylized in such a way that it'll make it a unique and thoroughly enjoyable movie experience.

Ah, Sky Captain is treading the perilous line between "Metropolis" and "The Avengers". Which way will he fall?

Stay tuned, kiddos...

Kerry is amazing. there's no real reason to trust him, but this film is going to blow doors off of folks. While I have my own problems with the digital filmmaking of today, the reason I enjoy this is because Kerry worked on it for years and basically presented it almsot done, and said "If you like it, be in it andd fill it out." Now it may or may not be a good idea, butits certainly new. I have to admire his balls. And if the production art and script are any indication, this could truly be a special movie. He has loads of other movies just sitting on his hard drive too, waiting for actors. I think this is a very cool devellopment in film and I look forward to people really being blown away.

Loved the trailer. Looks very original than anything else coming out.

Jolie's lips are real. Hard to believe but true nonetheless. Hey, the Beverly Hills plastic surgeons have to have someone for their clients to hold up a picture of and say, "I want lips like hers."

Now if only we could figure what the hell Meg Ryan did to her lips. Ick!

I don't know quite exactly why,
But I am fucking amped.

Hot damn, that looks pretty cool. Those dogfights look cool as fuck and the film has a thirties cliffhanger serial ambience which is the whole point really, still, it looks like a huge amount of fun. I await this one with great pleasure.

I love that trailer.

And the teaser poster I saw on AICN was fantastic.

The color grading looks a bit like Oshi's Avalon. Very Sepatoned, and washed out. But that's the way black and white film looked back in those days.

I wonder if the visual style will go over well with a mass audience.

As long as the story, and characters are up to par, this should be good.
