Snake Plissken - who could play him today?

Thread Starter
In honour of the new 'Escape from New York' 2-disc set (fuck me, it's cool), I thought it might be interesting to discuss the downright legendary antihero Snake Plissken...and who could possibly portray him if the movie were made today. (And no, I'm not suggesting Kurt Russell was anything less than sheer perfection in the role, but I always find shit like this kinda fun.)

So who among today's crop of would-be leading men could utter "Call me Snake" with such panache?

Not Affleck, not Damon. Probably not Colin Farrell. Maybe DMX? Pitt, perhaps? Russell Crowe - hmmm... Based on his 'Black Hawk Down' performance, Eric Bana strikes me as capable. And if Vin Diesel could ever recapture the coolness he displayed as Riddick, he might be suitable.

But my choice is another 'Pitch Black' cast member. If you ask me, Snake Plissken 2003 should be Cole Hauser. This guy looks, sounds and seems Bad Ass, and he deserves far better than playing bad guy to the homo-erotic Paul Walker/Tyrese combo in 2 Fast 2 Flaming.

Your thoughts, folks?

hate to say it...

Maybe, just maybe Thomas Jane, although I'm certain Jane's outing as The Punisher will be a painful experience like no other, I still like the guy.
I didn't really want to post, because entertaining the thought of someone else playing Plissken, may send a bad wave of Karma all the way to H*Wood and some dumb ass might try to remake Carpenter's classic.

p.s., Of course Carpenter basically remade the film himself w/ Escape from L.A.

There is and can only be one Snake Plisskin...Kurt Russell is perfect for the role.

I simply cannot imagine anyone else in Snake's boots.

However, if they did decide to re-make it and Kurt was unavailable-- I'd suggest Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.

Kurt Russell--why not him?...he works

no shit... If they want to get a younger crowd to see a Snake Plisken movie, give him a hunky sidekick or villain. Seeing Snake aged and still badass would be awesome.

Aged badasses:
Sam Elliott in Roadhouse or anything.
Billy Conolly in Boondock Saints
Pacino in Carlito's Way
Anthony Hopkins in Titus.. it's Shakespeare, but he's badass.
Albert Finney in Miller's Crossing

Kurt Russell should never have the misfortune of someone taking over Snake.

And you would be burned in the village square for witchcraft. The Rock is many things, but Snake Plissken is not one of them.

Russell Crowe?

Re: Snake Plissken - who could play him today?

Using "Affleck" and "Pitt" and "Farrell" in the same sentence as Snake Plissken gives me the CHILLS.

If they can make an INDY 4 with the geriatric carcass of Harrison Ford why the hell should they recast Snake?
I have to say, I would still like to see the rumored Escape From Earth. While Escape From L.A. was just good, there is still some scenes I just love. Especially the ending.

As for who could replace him: personally, I agree just let Russell resume the character. Honestly, I can't think of an actor who could take Russell'splace in this film. Sometimes an actor just owns a role.

This is a flawed discussion to begin with, because there is only one man to play Snake. And even the mention of DMX makes me want to vomit. But I thought Cole Hauser was liquid badass in PITCH BLACK, and certainly not a bad choice in a for-fun guessing game.

this thread reminds me of 'in living colors' star trek skits

Liquid badass?
Damnit. I came to this thread expecting a Craig Bierko nomination after seeing Matchstick had the latest post.

Instead I get "liquid badass?"

Bigger disappointment than TPM or Matrix Reloaded.

Oops.

I would never want to replace Kurt Russell but my vote would go to Gerard Butler. I think he's one of the few today besides Rush & Jason Isaacs that could seriously pull off an eye-patch.

Snake had his own unique way of speaking and moving and reacting that no other actor could ever get right. I mean what other actor could do THAT glare? What other actor could get the hair right? What other actor could smoke a cigarette and still make it look rebellious in this day and age?

It's a lot more than some cheap Clint impersonation. Nobody does stick it to the man endings like Kurt. Nobody.

Especially as Kurt Russell is still a badass, and not some lazy, paycheque-cashing, earring-wearing, flockhart-boning, midlife-crisis mockery of his former self.

Eliza Dushku as Snake's Illegit daughter...Daisy.

"Call me Daisy..."
The way things are going it would probably be Ben Affleck or Ashton Kutcher.

It's true, this is the Kurt Russell role... it's like asking who would play Indy, or The Man With No Name... but surprised no one has said Viggo Mortensen

And that's how she's listed in the credits too.

"Kari Wuhrer as The Ex"

if they did infact re-cast snake it would be someone like Paul Walker
post #30 of 39
Why not Ron Perlman? He's not a man with whom to fuck.

Okay, it's a stretch. But there'll never be anyone who does Snake as well as Snake.
I second either Hugh Jackman or Viggo Mortenson, with an additional vote for Christian Bale, who is the top choice for every single movie character from now until the end of time.

Snake is a rare breed. Kurt Russell is a rare breed. They represent something that seems to be dying off. The tough guy.

Today, being an action star seems have a negative connotation. Vin Diesel could be a tough guy, but unless he embraces it like a lover, his time will soon run out. The Rock has plenty of charisma and presence. The jury is still out on whether he is accepted or not.

What present day actor(s) could go up against Bronson, Eastwood, Stallone, Seagal, Ar-nuld and Van Damme in the machismo department?

I like none of the above suggestions.

I'm sick of the re-casting shit. Let Kurt play the part! John Wayne was kicking ass well into his 70's, Charles Bronson didn't become a superstar until he was 50 and Clint Eastwood could beat us all within an inch of our lives and still have room for our dads.
If anyone doubts Kurts ability in anyway, check out his performance in "Dark Blue." A so-so flick, but a damn fine performance that needs some recognition.

And this guy just looks like he stinks.
Well he's been in:

Dracula 2000...Reign of Fire...Tomb Raider 2...and Timeline.

Yeah, Zod. Pretty much...
the only reasonable solution in the absence of Kurt would be to do a Plissken cartoon instead, with David Hayter on voice.

DING! DING! DING! Yah, Viggo would get my vote.
If Kurt does return, he should be wearing a new article of clothing. A scarf I propose.

Anyway, we're talking like they ARE casting for a new Escape... movie. If we do it hard enough tomorrow there will be a front page article about it. Like the dude, wheres my car? April fools joke thing, remember. It came to bite us in the ass and they started working on a sequel.

I'm scared now.

Should we list what Russell was in before he played Plissken?? My favorite of which happens to be Follow Me Boys.
