How About Best/worst Beginnings? - Page 2

I like T3´s opening. Not the credits, the voice-over. The rest of the movie i lame, but i liked the mood in the start.

And my memory is so awful i can´t remember shit. I can easily remember endings... But openings...

Best:

Swordfish
The Fog
Scream
Magnolia
Fight Club (well, where the OP ends, i don´t know...)
Friday the 13th - Part 6

Worst:

Hulk (but i like the movie)
The Replacement Killers
Friday the 13th - Part 6

A Clockwork Orange

Best...opening...shot...ever.

edit: I forgot my other favorite opening. I'm sure other people hate this one, but Magnolia has one of the best endings in cinema history.

Also quite fond of Citizen Kane's opening. If those shots don't get you interested in the rest of the movie, I don't know what will.

Best (that haven't already been mentioned):
Leon- stealth kills galore, you have very little idea what's going on but it's cool as hell
GoldenEye- love the tension, love the intrigue
American Beauty- hilarious narration by Spacey, some of the best exposition ever
Moonraker- mid-air fighting for the parachute, totally kicks ass
Blade Runner- the scrolling text is beautifully ominous and creepy, the shots of L.A. are amazing
The Spy Who Loved Me- one of the best stunts ever filmed
Moulin Rouge- sets a great heavy emotional tone before launching into the first dancing scenes
High Fidelity- Cusack's delivery is perfect, and I love the opening monologue
LA Confidential- such a perfect, creative way to open the movie and set its tone

Worst:
Die Another Day- boring, slow-moving hovercrafts, and the surfing is totally impractical and dumb, not to mention out of place

Chalk another one for Blade having a pants-wettingly great opening!

I liked Return of the Kings beginning, what a terrific movie with a horrible ending (don't get me wrong, i'd have dug it if it were a DVD extra, but it's one of those extras i don't plan on seeing again). But i've noticed a lot of people don't like the beginning of Return of the king...my only beef...Should've happened in the water. much more cinematic, I've filmed a couple of fights/deaths in water and it's just great stuff.

Goodfellas: "I always knew I wanted to be a gangster" it's like they took the coolest line from the book, started the movie and sucked you in all in those first few moments. Such an outstanding start to one of the best films ever made.

Favorites:

The Royal Tenenbaums - I love everything about it: the book being checked out, Alec Baldwin's narration, the "Hey Jude" background music, etc. Just perfect.

Dazed and Confused - "Sweet Emotion" playing while everyone gets ready for the last day of school.

The Big Lebowski - Sam Elliott's voiceover.

Mulholland Dr. - Badalamenti's score as the limo weaves its way through the Hollywood hills.

Goldmember - Best use of cameos ever.

I Seem to be the only one who loves the beginning of ROTK. In my opinon when Deagol gets dragged under the water it should look fake and kind of hammy because it represents innocence. If you ever get a chance, read the hobbit right after you finish reading the LOTR and you'll notice how different in tone it is not only in its subject matter but also in its writing style. And the sudden change in tone from story book to greed and murder feels right to me.

In fact, I know I'm kind of going off on a tangent here, One of the reason's why I think LOTR is such a popular book is because as the book progresses and the hobbits lose their innocense and grow up, some what, so does Tolkien's writing style. It steadily and subtlely changes untill it seems that if you took a passage between Frodo and Sam on the slope of Mt Doom and a passage from FOTR about Tom Bombadill then compaired them you'd think they were written by two different authors.

I think Peter Jackson was trying to convey this major yet subtle tone change between the FOTR beginning and the majority of ROTK.

I also liked it because the way the murder was shot reminded me of the murder in Heavenly Creatures. Though I do agree that what keeps this opening from being perfect was Andy Serkis's uneeded lapse into Gollum speech.
