My wife finally broke down and we're getting a PS2. I'm not up on gaming and would appreciate some game suggestions. I've read some threads and have got some information but have some questions.

Is Simpsons Hit and Run any good? I understand most Simpson games are lousy.

What about Aliens V Predator? I like the idea that it is a strategy rather than shoot it up.

Anything else? Any help is appreciated.

I've heard that Simpsons Hit and Run is the best use of the Simpsons liscense in a video game, but based on other Simpsons games that I've played, that's not saying very much. But still, I've head it's a fun game. You can read a review of it here

And if you like football, definately go with Madden '04.

What other kind of styles interest you? If we had some more info on what you like, I'm sure we could help you out better.

Like hack and slash? Return of the King. Like racing? Need For Speed (Underground or Hot Pursuit... both are gold). Like fucked-up games that give you nightmares? Manhunt and Silent Hill are your best bet. Grand Theft Auto is a no brainer. Simpsons Hit and Run is pretty fun, but not worth a purchase.

I just played the Simpsons Hit & Run game yesterday, and recommend it. It's fun, and by far better than any Simpsons game out there. The sense of humor of the series is translated faithfully to the game, and I'm amazed at the amount of mayhem you can cause in a family game. I had wonderful flashbacks of playing Carmageddon while I ran over innocent pedestrians!

The Ratchet & Clank games are great, as are Jak and Daxter. Any of the EA Sports games shouldn't disappoint.

The PS2 has pretty much the largest library of games out there, and there are so many I've enjoyed I can't even think of them right now.

If you are new to the PS2 your money is much better spent on something other than Simpsons or Aliens/Predator. You need to give a little more info on what type of games you like though.

You're right. I really liked playing Resident Evil. On the PC I liked Commandos, Baldurs Gate and Axis and Allies. My kids and I enjoyed playing racing games together (like Crash Racing). I dig strategy games as well. Does that help?

Burnout 2 is a killer racing game.

War of the Monsters is a great beat-em-up.

My racing recommendation is Midnight Club 2. Final Fantasy X is a great RPG. Ico is one of the best puzzle type games ever. Tony Hawk 3,4 & 5 are just about perfect. There is a brand new Crash racing game out, supposed to be pretty damn hard though. If you like Resident Evil I would suggest Fatal Frame 2 or Silent Hill 3.

If you really dig strategy games, try and check out Dynasty Tactics.

There's a great action/rpg hybrid of Baldur's Gate called Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance which I think was available for the PS2. There's a sequel due very soon in the new year...

Yeah, it's also in the greatest hits section now so it's only $20 (or less if you find a nice X-Mas sale).

Do NOT, I repeat do NOT spend one red cent on Aliens vs. Predator.

Worst game I ever gave an hour to.

It is, in fact I'm pretty sure it debuted on PS2. Be aware though that it is very very little like the Baldur's Gate PC RPGs and very very much like Diablo. So if you like Diablo, go for it.

I bought Dark Alliance for my girls on impulse while standing in line at Target this weekend. Glad to hear it is fun.

I'm disappointed that Aliens V Predator does not so good though. It looks like it should be fun.

I own a Gamecube. But if I were to buy a PS2, the first thing in that drive would be GTA Vice City. Just don't let young children near it.

Let me quote that again:

Not only is it one of the best puzzle-type games ever, it would also be the best game on the system if it wasn't so short. But it's definitely one of those games you'd want to play a 2nd time around.

There's also the Silent Hill games which has been mentioned, but I say get Silent Hill 2 - it's better, longer and scarier than 3, and half the price (It's part of the "Greatest Hits" discount line).

You'd be missing out if you skipped playing either of those 2 games. There are the more obvious ones, like GTA: Vice City, but you can't go wrong with those 2 above.

Prince of Persia is pretty snazzy, as well...
