Getting an Xbox next week... questions about LIVE

I don't have internet at my house and I hear you need broadband to play LIVE... can I just subscribe to any broadband provider? Do you need a credit card for LIVE? What's the voice system like? Is it confusing? How fun is it? What are the best LIVE games?

Yes, you need a DSL modem or higher and it could be any suscriber. You do need a router though in order to connect your X-Box to your internet service. The only other way is to bye the X-Box wireless thing but I think its pretty expensive compared to a 5 dollar ethernet cable you need.

You do need a credit card as well. The first year is free and then its 50 dollars a year every year after that. The voice system isn't confusing at all and it works really well, especially when you are playing on teams.

As for the best games. out of the ones I have played Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Counter Strike, and Rainbow Six 3 are all great. A lot of people say Project Gotham Racing 2 is also really good. Over all X-Box live is a great experience and well worth the 50 dollars.

There is also another thread here if you need any more info.

The Xbox I'm getting is the one with 2 free months and the headset and all that.... is the router included?

I don't have a credit card right now... is there no other way?

You must have a credit card. It makes it really easy to pay as well. They just hit me up for the $50 for my second year automatically. It's very worth the price.

Put me on your buddy list when you get setup.

weird as it sounds, nearly every sob I've played with on Live sounds the same. A hokey southern drawl kind of accent.

The router is not included. I would recommend getting a wireless router. They generally have several inputs for ethernet BESIDES having the wireless ability. So if you decide to go the Ethernet cable route, it'll work for that, but if you later want to go wireless, it'll do that too.

This looks like a good one, but a wireless router will probably run around $60-$75, depending on the brand and where you buy it. THEN, you need to buy either a wireless G bridge, or go for the X-Box-brand wireless adapter, which runs somewhere around $140.

Or get just the router and a $5 ethernet cable. Your choice.

Also, you MUST have either a credit or debit card to sign up. You enter it into your x-box when you sign up for the service. Though I'm not sure exactly how that works with the two-free months deal.

They set it up this way so they can just automatically charge you for the service every year unless you cancel.

Don't get the X-Box brand wireless G bridge...it's a waste of money. If you are thinking of going wireless, get this combo instead:

Linksys Wireless Router

Linksys Bridge

Linksys makes some of the best networking hardware around, and it's extremely simple to setup.

There is absolutely no need to worry about getting the new G technology...it will not make any difference in your gameplay speed. Sure, the G is rated 5x faster than the B; however, that only makes a difference when transferring files to and from computers on the same B or G network...not when downloading from the internet.

You will not notice a difference between and B and G network for internet related gaming.
