Being a genre often lending itself to mediocrity and sentimentality, what are your favorite English language or foreign chick flick genre film/s and please state what makes your fave film/s in this genre stand out, compared to other usually mediocre efforts in the genre.

What are we defining as a chick flick though?

I went into Love, Actually expecting a good nap and some possible compensation from my girl later on. I was actually quite surprised and found myself enjoying the movie quite a bit. So if that's considered a 'chick flick', then I guess that would be my choice, although it's not really a genre.

Though this is a genre I generally slay, here are a few I enjoy...

Still Breathing - Independent films of this genre tend to be a bit more interesting then the typical sentimental formula crap. The Austin, Texas culture twist I found quite interesting.

A Walk in the Clouds - Again I think I enjoy this one for much the same reasons as Still Breathing, the culture surrounding Wine County, California. It also had aspects & symbolism that reminded me somewhat of Steinbeck's, To A God Unknown.

Keeping the Faith - Nice to see Edward Norton directing in my opinion such a difficult genre.

Kate & Leopold - Not only am I a sucker for sci/fi time films but also Hugh Jackman. Perfect combo.

Singing in the Rain - Does this one count as a "chick flick"?? Not sure but it certainly has romance & is one of the best of its kind. Very clever.

7 Brides for 7 Brothers - Come to think of it, I'm not sure how many modern chicks would like this one with the kidnapping & all but I just find it romantic.

I know it is not a very unique answer, but I love When Harry Met Sally a lot.

I also like a few that other people really seem to hate like Message in a Bottle and City of Angels.

Jerry Maguire & Bridget Jones' Diary.
I was pleasantly surprised by these two, and no, it has little or nothing to do w/ Zellwegger.

Does A Room With a View count as a chick flick?
