The 100 Greatest Musicals Of All Time

Thread Starter
Over here in the UK they've been doing a poll on the greatest musicals of all-time and it got me wondering about this genre as it's one that I haven't really explored in any great depth. Of the Top 20 I have seen 8 in full and significant chunks of 2 others.

I can't say I'm surprised at some of the choices (not that I agree with them) e.g. The Sound Of Music, and it's important I think to note that the votes collected are based on both stage and screen versions.

I can't be bothered typing in all 100 so here's the Top Twenty for you and if you want to go and have a look at the rest you can via this link...Countdown the 100 Greatest Musicals

1. Grease
2. The Sound Of Music
3. The Wizard Of Oz
4. West Side Story
5. Mary Poppins
6. Singin' In The Rain
7. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
8. Chicago
9. Oliver!
10. Moulin Rouge
11. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
12. My Fair Lady
13. Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Once More With Feeling
14. The Lion King
15. Les Miserables
16. Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory
17. Cabaret
18. Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
19. Bugsy Malone
20. Phantom Of The Opera

Of the musicals that I have seen I think it's difficult to judge because I think some of them are more 'pure' musicals than others e.g. Blues Brothers I always think of as a comedy with musical moments i.e. the songs aren't really a contribution to the story.

Your Top 10 musicals then please ladies and gentlemen?

South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. It's a great musical. It has to be on there. That's the one most likely to be forgotten. You can can work on the others.

Moulin Rouge and Wizard of OZ rank very high on my list as well as Godspell, Xanadu and Annie.

As for POTP, I like Phoenix's song.

would Velvet Goldmine count as a musical? That movie was GREAT, and also includes probably the only scene where Batman services Obi-Wan

y'all are brutalizing me

My favorite musical is Li'l Abner. A great, vibrant film from the 1950s that is a hell of a lot of fun to watch. It's only on VHS, but still in print. I'd recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it already and enjoy wacky characters galore.
