Darkness!!!

Over the holiday weekend my buddy and I were fortunate enough to get a copy of Darkness to view. It was one of the best horror movies I have seen in quite sometime. This is one of those movies that slowly builds on the tension and delivers throughout the movie. The direction is near perfect and cudos go to the actors who make their characters believeable.

For the life of me, I can not understand how Dimension can let this movie along with the directors other movie (The Nameless) sit on their shelves and collect dust. Yet Dimension will continue to release utter sh*t, like another Hellraiser and Children of the Corn sequel.

This movie deserves to be seen, I only wish we (the horror fans) could of had this movie released in theaters instead of junk such as House of the Dead, Gothika, Darkness...the list could go on and on!

If you have a chance to see this movie, I highly recommend it!

I will swear by this movie as being the one movie in the last year and a half that actually gave me chills watching it.
Acting, story, lighting and cinematography were all over the top amazing.

Even if there were some on this site who didn't like it at all-(name that rhymes with Sonny Tuflame-Freak!)...I LOVED this movie...
Thanks Addix-You rule...

as soon as I get extra funds, I'm gonna blind buy this one

$28.00 is kinda steep for a BB for me, but del Toro recommended it so I'll scoop it up

I couldn't agree more. Darkness is one of the most chilling horror movies I've seen in a long time and it quickly became one of my favorites. It holds up really well to repeat viewings too. The build is slow, but once it gets going, it doesn't let up. You barely have time to catch your breath. I love that in a movie. This movie needs an American release damn it! I don't know what they are thinking in shelving this one.

I think it's very very good, but flawed. It owes plenty to other films, especially The Shining, and more recent stuff like The Devil's Backbone and Session 9. But it owes in a good way, not a stealy pickpocket way.

Main problems: As with The Nameless, some of the twists are telegraphed and so I remained a few steps ahead throughout (it's not that I'm especially smart, it's just that the pool of potential plot twists starts to dry up when you've seen so damn many of them. I can't help running through the possibilities and narrowing it down to one or two suspects before the film lands it on me... had the same problem with Identity, for example. Even some of the Fincher stuff). Another downer I felt was that Giancarlo Gianinni (so great in Hannibal) kind of sleepwalked his way through this. And the actor who plays the dad isn't bad, it's just that his performance is off. There isn't a believable progression from his being a normal dad to flipping out Jack Torrance style. Jack Nicholson and even James Brolin did it miles better.

But one thing is for certain- Balaguero was BORN to direct the Silent Hill movie.

i thought Darkness was pretty good. Especially the ending it had. Still think the Nameless was better. The ending was better in that film too.

The Nameless was definitely a great movie as well. Which again adds to my point of Dimension having the rights to 2 great films and just sitting on them. While continuing to release (for the most part) junk.

I will never understand that kind of thought process.

Are we talking about the recent Spanish movie from Fantastic Factory? The trailer looked decent. The last time I asked about it here, no one seemed to like it.

I still haven't seen it, but I'm a sucker for movies that feature kids afraid of the dark.

Where can I get ahold of this movie? Amazon didn't list it, and when I type in Darkness on Ebay, I get hundreds of listings for Darkness Falls and Army of Darkness. (I even included the director, but that didn't bring back anything.) Help? Please?

Well, it's not out on a R1 US DVD so you'll have to buy a foreign DVD. Do you have a codefree/hacked DVD player? If so you may want to go here and order the R3 Korean DVD. There's also a R2 PAL DVD from Spain and a R2 NTSC DVD from Japan but you're probably best off with the Korean edition. It has the original English language track and good picture/sound quality.

If you're not able to play Region 3 DVDs you could go here and pick up the bootlegged Region Free DVD. Of course that one doesn't have the same high quality and extras and comes without a box or ANY cover artwork.

Now take your pick ...

If you've any more questions, don't hestitate to ask!

And yes, DARKNESS is a great flick, especially the first time around. NAMELESS is better, though.

I didn't really like Darkness, it was ok, kind of slow and a little dull, I wouldn't really recommend it, nothing really stood out. It felt like a PG-13 movie, to afraid to do anything REALLY scary, whenever it was about to, it held back.

I have to agree somewhat. It definitely felt like a PG-13 flick and I wouldn't put it beyond Dimension/Miramax (who co-produced the film and had a lot of say in the script-writing process) to have demanded it be just so.

That's probably the main reason I prefer LOS SIN NOMBRE. It is so much darker and pulls no punches whatsoever ...

Damn, I hope Balaguero can make his next film, THE FRAGILE, without a legion of US studio execs looking over his shoulder. I can see that he wants to make films with a bigger budget but he really should choose his partners more carefully ... His other forthcoming flick, THE HORSEMEN, was originally set to be for Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes and that sounded OK to me after TCM 2003 but now that Bay has partnered with Miramax ...

You can't base this movie off its trailer. If you're an honest fan of horror then chances are that you'll atleast enjoy this movie.

Granted different people have different tastes but everyone that I know personally who's see it has loved it.

I have yet to see Nameless but I'm working on it.

If your dvd player can play SVCDs (if you don't know, look it up at www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers ), PM me your address and I can send you Darkness and Los Sin Nombre (region free obviously and NTSC) to hold you over until they get a Region 1 or Region 0 release. Don't worry, it's not crappy quality either...near DVD in fact.
