Anyone who has seen the original before seeing this one is NOT going to start disliking it after seeing the remake. If anything atleast it will make a new generation of kids go rent the original - who gives a shit if they like it or not.

As for changing the title...if you change the title of a remake then it really isn't a remake is it? It just becomes a blatant rip-off. I, personally, would be more insulted if someone remade a project of mine but then gave it a different title than if they atleast gave me some recognition by using the same name.
Everyone has their own opinions, and far be it from me to say otherwise...

And I will always respect an opinion even if I don't agree with it.

But how can someone (this is NOT directed at anyone in particular, I promise) slam this movie without even seeing it?

Granted, the people who like what they see so far are basing it on opinions and trailer footage and behind the scenes info...

But the people that dislike the idea of this movie are basing it on the same things.

How can something be so vehimitely (I think I spelled that wrong...) hated with no real footage to speak of seen?

I understand disliking the idea, or loyalty to Romero, or the dislike of remakes...but-

BIG QUESTION:

But if this was a stand alone zombie movie, would anyone who dislikes the idea of the remake, like the footage that they've seen so far?
Would you like this movie if the name wasn't there?
If the name was different I would not have a problem with this movie so far. I can't say that I would like it because I haven't seen it. I try not to get excited about any movie because I don't like being let down. So as with any movie I would still try not to get excited about it. I like the footage that I have seen so far. It looks like a good action/horror movie, but I have said that all along.

As long as the credits give credit to the original movie/story I don't see any movie being a rip-off. Every movie is takes from every movie before it.
If you don't care if someone who saw the remake first likes the original, why do you care if someone who saw the original first supports the remake?

Personally i don't care either way.
But
I support this movie, and I think it looks like it will be good.

So it's natural for someone who is for something to defend it and their choice.

But, personally, i want everyone to like this, not the "be right" or 'vindicated" but because i looove zombie movies and with support, we may get more.

Also, Borgosi, I hope you find enjoyment out of this movie. I really do, because I'd rather see someone enjoy a movie than be let down by it.

Believe it or not, I hope you and everyone else has a good time with this movie.

No evil motives...I just know how let down I feel when i want to see a good movie and end up hating one.
I don't really care who likes which version. I just believe that a film should be judged on its own merit AFTER being viewed.

And I still believe that this remake will not tarnish the original in any way.
Whoah you guys this is getting really heated. But anyways I feel dumb becuz on the same day that I asked whether or not anyone has seen the previews on T.V. The very next day I saw it on my local UPN.
My firm opinion is that this movie will be very good.

I love the original, it is what made me a horror movie fan.

I will always love the original, no matter how good or bad the remake is. And NOTHING will ever take the place of the original in my heart and mind.

So, c'mon remake, let's have a good time.
PETER WHERE ARE YOU?
It will only tarnish the original by causing people who have seen the remake and not the original to form an opinion of the original based on the remake. If the avg. moviegoer sees the remake and they don't like it I don't expect them to go out a find the original to rent or buy. I also don't expect the avg. movie fan that didn't like the original to stand in line for a remake. Other than that I don't expect either one to tarnish the other.

I expect every horror fan to see both movies at some point.

When I see the movie I hope to enjoy it as much as anyone does. When I watch this movie the first time it will be purely for the enjoyment of watching a movie. I will try and not even think about the original. The second or third time I will compare it to the original. I don't think comparing them can be advoided. One is named after the other. It's like comparing a movie based on a book to a book it was based on, if you don't want people to compare them don't name one after the other. I think we will all compare them in the end.

i think this is what led to a lot of the resident evil movie hate and several others, i just choose to point that one out, cause that bothers me the most.

***SPOILER...Well, Kinda***

OK, I have an interesting bit of info. Consider this a SPOILER .

It doesn't give away any of the character's fates or major plot points...what it does, is tell you about a cool zombie gag.

It might take away some of the shock and impact of the scene, so consider yourself warned.

The zombie that jumps on the security guard in the parking lot...has no legs from the knees down!

It hangs on the rafters and actually drops down on the guard.

If you watch the teaser trailer frame by frame, you can see the background under the zombie, where it's legs are supposed to be.

Also, on the film's official website there is a production photo that shows the zombie without legs.

Pretty cool in my opinion.

Here's a link to a German site for the movie.

It has a few new photos and other stuff:

http://movies.uip.de/dawnofthedead/

The site is in German, but if you want a laugh, watch the trailers in German language.

Everyone.........
Just look at it this way.........How long has it been since "Living Dead" films were on the big screen??.......I mean the sudden interest in "undead" films is a great thing for all of us....
Of course barring a few exceptions, the last few zombie flicks were pretty good....

So lets enjoy this while we can.......before Hollywood deems zombie films unprofitable!!!!!!!!

And then there wont be any "REMAKES/CONTINUATION OF TRILOGIES" to bicker about!!!!

I wonder if Entertainment Tonight or Access Hollywood is covering DoTD??
Great post Phantasm I agree 100% with the Dawn stuff. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake is another indication that poeple can take a classic and in some ways make it even better than the original. That's what I'm looking forward to with this one.
Holy shit, I couldn't have expressed my view of this whole remake thing any better! Kick ass post!
As for titles, the first movie based on "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr. was called "The Thing From Another World" not "The Thing".

The "remake" of "The Thing From Another World" and "The Fly" were as good as they were because the directors didn't "remake" the first movies. They went back to the original stories and made new movies based on the stories. Just for your information, "The Fly" was based on the story "The Fly" by George Langelaan. I'll take the original "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" over any of the "remakes". I don't know if the directors of any of the "remake" went back to the original story by Jack Finny or not.
Well, since there is no original "story" for Dawn of the Dead other than the springboard of Night of the Living Dead, I'd say that the remake went back to the basic premise of a zombie ruled world, and took it it's own way.

I'd rather have it called Dawn of the Dead and be a retelling than another zombie movie set in a mall.

People would cry ripoff either way.

This movie has a lot going against it from the start, but it's nice to see that a lot of open minds are taking a look at it.

I agree on calling it Dawn of the Dead, because if they changed the title, that would be such a cop-out anyway...we all know what it was and what it will be...a changed title is just stupid at this point.

Plus, the title Dawn of the Dead puts asses in the seats better than "Zombies ate my Mall" or the list of assinine titles Knowles threw out.
(Just further proof that the "super-fans" have no idea what sells)

Sure, in a perfect world everyone would get their way and every movie would be perfect and Romero would have 12 Living Dead movies by now and we'd agree with every movie industry decision...

But shit ain't like that.

We deal with what we are given.

We're gonna take it and hate it or we're gonna take it and like it...

Either way, we're gonna take it.

If someone wants to boycott the movie (which I've seen called for on other lesser message boards), then go ahead.
The movie will still be there. And 3 kids in Nebraska can sit home that night.
It just reeks of "love me Daddy, I didn't get my way" bullshit.

This movie will be a great movie, made by talented people.

Of course, if I'm wrong, I guarantee you I will be the first person to complain and yell, especially since I've spent almost a year of my life following and supporting this movie.

I've built this movie up so much in my head that it has a lot to live up to, for me anyway.

I really think it will be a cool, kick ass kovie.

But everyone will enjoy it more with an open mind.

If it's being slammed even before it opens in the theatres, then it will have no chance for some.

Enjoy, you might be suprised.
Ironically Finney's Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is a riff on Robert Heinlen's The Puppet Masters.

And maybe I'm being facetious, but I still don't understand Borgasi's point other than a fastidious retention of devotion to a picture's title remaining the sole property of the original picture. Which is, again, ironic in that the one thing a picture can "take" from another in the film industry without really causing any kind of copyright infringement - as a general rule, of course there are exceptions - is reuse a title - for instance, there are seven picture caled Betrayed, eight called Deception, seven pictures called Nothing, three pictures called Manhattan and so on... The only difference is that Dawn Of The Dead is a more recognizble title (as Borgasi is at pains to point out, probably just within the horror community). Yet I don't think it's a registered trademark is it ?

But as has been established from seemingly time immemorial, the new picture is capitalizing on an established property, knowingly and reverantially as far as we can see, just as all honerable remakes have done in the past. Just as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre did for instance.

So apart from slavish, stubborn devotion to Romero, I just don't see the problem.

Ok, so they shortened the title from "The Thing From Another World" (a really bad 50's title) to "The Thing." You really consider that a change? By this reasoning they should change "The Dawn of the Dead" to "Dawn"?

They're just putting asses in the seats.
I don't know if the title has a copyright or not but I do know it was sold to Universal. Romero has said that he is having a hard time getting the rights to link his new movie to his other movies by title.

To say this is going to be a great movie without having seen it is just as wrong as saying it's going to be a bad movie without have seen it. IMHO

For me the issue of titles isn't just about Dawn. I would be against a new book being written about a mad doctor creating life being call Frankenstein, or a new vampire novel being called Dracula.
This is what happens when a thread is started too soon. Argh! We still have a few weeks left until this thing opens and most people are already sick of talking about it. Well, sick of talking and reading about the title anyway. Let's never mention it again. I finally saw the TV ad tonight and I am now stoked to see it. I'll probably join the fanatics and take off work so I can be first in line for the matinee. I hope the Dude is right!
I keep repeating the things in the list because there are some people who that act as if I want the movie to fail. I don't. I have nothing to gain or loose from this movie and how it does at the box office. As a horror fan I hope it is a good movie, however I will not judge it before I see it.

Has anyone heard if there will be a soundtrack? I've check at Amazon.com and Borders and no one has heard anything. I don't know if I want it yet, I was just wanted to see what kind of music is in it.

At least no one can say that I change my mind at the drop of a hat. LOL
post #437 of 1216
Seems to me that you have changed your tune.

And whoever dissed Resident Evil, fuck you! I liked that movie.
However, the Harry Knowles crack made me smile, so I forgive you...this once.

And come on whoever said Borgsi is another Anna......she's just someone who was enthusiastic about a movie you guys ran off the boards. This guy has been complaining constantly and making silly comments. Big difference.
Borgosi has his own opinions about the movie, and right or wrong, I respect that he makes an argument for his views.

I, obviously, have a different view on this.

Let's not slam him for his opinion, after all I could be called out on my opinion that this movie looks great...I'm also stuck in broken record mode.

But lets ALL try to turn this into a discussion about the movie.

We know who is excited for this movie, and who is not. And we know both of the reasons for each side's views.

That point is a moot one:
The movie is here...'nuff said.

As for the soundtrack, I too have been looking online and at Best Buy to no success.

They'll probably put it out in the next couple of weeks, right before the movie.
I hope they don't fuck that one up - I'd rather have instrumental music during the movie instead of a ROTLD style soundtrack of band's music through out the movie.

Y'know, I might be tooting my own horn here (and if it comes across that way...so be it), but the other day when I posted the (possible) Spoiler about the parking garage zombie, no one else on the internet had that info.

I'm not saying it wasn't known, but that NO WHERE did I see it mentioned.

The next day after I posted the message a few posts above, I started seeing on other message boards that I lurk at (I only belong to CHUD...if it's not CHUD-it's CRAP!), and suddenly people started to post this bit of info (with the same"possible spoiler" tag).

Hmmmmm.....
Your right, I apologise to Borgsi. The comment was uncalled for. Sorry dude. My point is how can you respect his point of view bu then totally go and rag on Anna, who is certainly no worse?

But yeah, according to the Inspector's review, I am really looking forward to the relationship with Vin Rhymes and the other guy over a long distance. That seems like a really good charecter arch. I have avoided ALL spoilers, so I am coming to this fresh. I really feel this movie will be totally amazing. This, Van Helsing, Punisher, Hellboy and AVP are top movie priorities this year

Anyone know who is playing Andy, the gun shop owner?

There's a strange lack of info about him on the net.
No problem. I know I'm hard headed.

Thanks for having my back.

So far as I know the only way that I've changed my tune is more and more I'm thinking that I will see this in a theater. I don't know right now. I'm going to wait and see. If fans love it I might. If it comes to the local drive-in I will. Almost any movie is better on a 30 foot screen. They wanted to show TCM 2003 at the end of the season but didn't because of weather. I hope this years opening weekend is TCM 2003 and Dawn 2004. It would be a great way to see both of them for the first time.

I was sure of the same thing, until the photos of Reiniger as a general showed up.

I'm supposing that he will be in some sort of news footage.
I wish DotD would have a scene like from "The Rising". The president is giving a emergency news conference, when a zombie stumbles in and bites him. One secret service man tries to take the president out with a headshot, but the other secret service men are still dedicated to protecting the 'president', and try to stop him. Gun battle ensues.
Well, there is a picture on the net where some official-looking woman is outside on a lawn, and army guys and black suited men are standing around her, so maybe there's a news scene with the First Lady either being attacked or whisked away to safety.

(I've seen the above picture on websites about pre-production.)
speaking of the rising (whihc i am currently in the middle of), there's a direct reference to the original dotd.

....just thought i'd point that out
The drive-in that I go to is about a hour away but I'll drive the hour in a heartbeat. They always show two movies and it cost $5.00 per adult to get in. Under 18 years is $3.00, under 3 years is free. You use the sound system in you car to listen to the movies. That's the theater I go to the most. Every year at Halloween they have costum contests and show three movies that came out over the last year. You get to watch your favorite movies on a 30ft screen and if you want to you can bring your own drinks. If they get Dawn I will see it there.

OK...Back on topic. Has anyone seen Dawn T-shirts or anything else for sell?
