The Politics forum is certainly a stale and lifeless circle jerk these day - and it's one of the reasons I rarely post there any more - but to say that's because anyone who posts an "unpopular" opinion is likely to be banned is disingenuous.

Firstly, the definition of an "unpopular" opinion is vague and subjective. Secondly, there are plenty of posters who have posted things that could be deemed unpopular who are still here. Overlord, Death Surge, JuddL all spring to mind as recent examples.

The forum used to be a lot more balanced, but the lack of conservative voices in that forum isn't due to some partisan cull. Even Grifter was never banned, and he was about as unpopular (among the people you seem to have a beef with) as you're likely to find. If right-leaning posters simply gave up and left the board of their own volition that's something they chose to do. Is there an atmosphere of leftist piling on? Sure. But that's the nature of that forum. It's just the way it is. Moderators could spend more time there and tell everyone to be nice and debate properly, but it's one sub-forum of a larger board and - fuck it - it's the internet. Political debates almost always end up leaning one way or the other. If that forum has become overwhelmingly liberal, it's through natural selection - not deliberate manipulation.

My point was to find out why you even care about the state of CHUD's message boards.

The only people who get banned swiftly around here are either those shilling a product, or those who join with a troll mentality. Now, you can point out how Brad or Devin act "trollish" as often as you like, . It's different when they do it. They're liked and accepted here. Others are not.

It's not fair, or democratic, but that's how it is. That's how it's always been, here and elsewhere. There are Millettes and Faracis on every message board I've ever frequented, so what makes this place of such interest to you?

As CHUD has never held itself up as the most balanced and even-handed web community, or publically derided other message boards for their lack of democratic merit, then it doesn't really matter how many times you point out this perceived double standard. It's not changing.

And coming from an newly registered anonymous internet guy who has openly admitted trolling in the past, and being party to the organised attempts at disruption that led to heavier moderation and low tolerance for aggressive new posters, your comments don't carry much weight.

We could become the paranoid ban-happy losers you describe, and delete everyone who disagrees, disrespects or doesn't fit in until there were just a handful of egotistical, elitist hypocrites left posting here. Why would you care? I doubt the healthy future of the CHUD message board is your priority here.

The joke, when they did call themselves that, and presumably in the site names themselves, was on the Chud posters who refer to themselves and other posters as "Chewers" and don't find it embarrassing. Calling the posters here "Chuddies" was a similar dig - the joke of that wasn't that Chuddies was particularly demeaning, but that Chud regulars would take issue with it because they considered themselves "Chewers," which, as has already been pointed out, is lame.
You seem to have absolute contempt for this board and everyone who posts here. What, assuming you are not a troll, keeps you posting here and interacting with them?

Wow, is that guy still here?

JohnShade is walking the fine line of trolldom and rabble-rousing. Good luck with that.

Quit deliberately pushing people's buttons and you'll be fine.

Why all the hate for this site?

I was going to start a whole new thread for this but I didn't want to start a whole new flame war.

I posted a link to the Park Chan-Wook roundtable that I participated in on the LoveHKFilm.com forums. The day after I posted it I saw that the thread I started had been locked and a new one had been started. What happened was is that one of the forum members had gone off on a anti-CHUD rant. The moderator had locked my original thread in order to stop this guy (the site had a VERY low tolerance for shit talkers, which is another reason the original thread had been locked). The forum member had the following to say:

-Chud.com sucks.

-It's just that frankly, chud.com is crap. Particularly when it comes to Asian cinema. I've read enough articles and comments for a period of time to know that they don't really know what they are talking about. Worst thing is there feels to be a condescending swagger about it all as if they think they do know which actually makes it all the more biting and cumbersome to sit through.

-Chud.com is like Aint it Cool News with a bloated ego.

Why are all these people trolling this site? I've never seen anything on this site to justify any thoughts of bloated ego's.

Cry me a fucking river. It's not like anyone didn't have to post in there if they didn't want to.

Quit your bitching and move on. You're starting to make this place unbearable at times.

And just when I thought we got back on a roll....

Can I push the button this time? Please?

Right.

Not exactly a good example. Devin, volume-wise, churns out more news articles and commentaries than the other updaters. People who frequent the site surely noticed a slow-down of articles (I know I did). His little update just stated why he had been gone and what we have to look forward to....how is that having a bloated ego? Hell, that update gave me things to look for on the main page (and thus the main point of Devin's update).

When you go on holiday and come back, do you hope your friends miss you ?

If you're a regular reader of the site, which involves an extensive workload behind the scnes most have the capacity to realise, and one of the main figureheads of the site is away, people might genuinely miss a personality. They may be curious as to the film related exploits that figurehead's been involved in while away. I believe there was a list on said artcle ? It was brought up on their own message boards no less. Shocking ! It's not a cross-cultural shout out via a Talk Back now, is it, pedant ?

It's called 'camaraderie',

Which if you've ever been involved in a community venture - online or real - or were here for any genuine purpose other than to rally some kind of subverted, tengential self-estem boost for yourself (that must be backfiring horribly for you by the way), you might figure that as being pretty cut and dried.

It's tiring for us, I can't begin to imagine what the desperate effort's like for you.

May God forgive us for the righteous fury we've just unleashed!

I'm "friends" with him as are quite a few people here. As much as anyone is "friends" with many people in a www age. I've exchanged emails and pleasantries with many people I've never met. And sometimes I wonder how they're doing. Especially if their main duties form part of a leisure (and work) focal point of my day.

The rest are either the small minority he clashes with on the boards, or else a wider readership, many of whom I'm sure have exchanged private correspondance even if it's just a rushed off email: c.f. his letters column, which doesn't write itself.

But I guess that doesn't jive with your wantonly skewed perspective and how good that viewpoint makes you feel about yourself. Just as your talk of egos would make you feel vicariously agrandized and take the special sting out of the fact that not as many people are tuning into your pearls of wisdom on a regular basis. But have it it.

Sorry, the guy you don't like all that much is in reality liked, respected or at the very, very least consistenty read by many people a good deal more visible and I dare say meaningful than yourself.

That you aloofly complain about this within an online community you know to be fairly tightknit and loyal than many makes it all the more transparent.
That and he's missing out on some of Devin's humor.
Who hurt you John? Was it Supernova? Did he kick you out of the club house?
He's a geek like the majority here. Just more jealous, hence more argumentative.

It's pretty obvious by now.

But he called me ugly! ;_;

The ignore function.

Holy shit. There's no way this guy can deny some sort of agenda. He's spending all his time here, doing the internet equivilent of flapping his gums.
You know it gets bad when a moderator like me wants to click on the ignore button as well.
Yeah, that's something I wrote on my blog, allright.

I really liked that job, too.

As scintillating as this debate has become, I'm afraid the fragile CHUD community simply can't survive any more of JohnShade's scathing insights into the lives of people he doesn't care about, or opinions on a message board he has no interest in.

Fear not, Shade fans, I'm sure he'll re-register soon to continue telling us how much he doesn't like us.

"I was an aimless cultural avenger on an obscure film website where my feckless quasi-ire was rendered utterly pointless merely by virtue of people who were actually there to talk shop/movies/whatever"

That certainly sounds more indicative of a complete and worthy path in life life than some guy talking about his perfectly reasonable real life job.

I assume your cure for cancer/time machine/Playboy competitor is running at full speed to make its deadline ?

Go get 'em, Captain !

It would have been much better if Shade's cry for attention poll was left open for no one to respond to it. Although some in the community would take the bait regardless.

Nice bit of house cleaning by the mods today. Thanks guys, those two were getting way beyond a joke and God knows they were given plenty of chances here.

I may be a little naive but I really can't understand what kind of a kick they get from that behaviour. Or how they even have the time to waste.
So is this an alternative log on for the same poster? (ie. Johnshade and John Shade).

I don't think so, because John Shade has actually participated with some lucid and thoughtful posts.
