Ryo & Verbal's 4th annual I.V.E.A. Awards

That time of the year again folks. Verbal and I have been very playing all the games nominated this year. It has been a tough year because so many great games came out. We tried to fit them all in but with three systems out there putting AAA titles week after week it is very hard coming up with winners and a good list of honorable mention (nominees) without leaving out great games. On a side note for the music awards the nominees go by the Japanese release date of the soundtrack cd, so some games might not have come out to US shores yet. I feel as though game soundtracks should stand on their own without the game backing them so therefore I don't feel it is required to play the game in order to enjoy the soundtrack. Also note this are console awards, not PC.

Without further delay...

Nice list, boys.

Don't have much if anything to complain about except that I've found Project Gotham Racing to be much more enjoyable than Mario Kart.

and there I was saddened another tradition became quashed, or something.

Solid effort guys. Great picks I agree with for the most part. Again, the only weak link is the ommision of Call of Duty.

Any reason why Viewtiful Joe and Crimson Skies aren't any of the nom/winners?

Winner: The Getaway
Guys... comeon. The Getaway blows. There are a ton of better action games than this.

Yeah, Call of Duty could have been on there, but since the Xbox version has yet to surface, it can't, maybe next year.

As for the absense of Crimson Skies and Viewtiful Joe. Verbal felt as though Viewtiful Joe got old very quickly, I only played the game a few times to get the feel of how it work and the premise. I agreed with him because while playing I felt the same way, that this is getting old pretty fast. As for Crimson Skies....errr copy and paste error from Word, it was supposed to be nominated in the Best Online Game cat. Fixing now. Thanks for pointing that out though.

As for Cheese's comment on The Getaway, the only others ones that were left out of the nominees were the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and Panzer Dragoon Orta by accident. In any case, The Getaway would still win in both our books because of the cinematic quality was better than the ROTK game and more innovative than the others nominees as well. It also had one hell of a story and some of the best voice acting ever in a game.

I take it you guys haven't played Zone of the Enders 2. When I say this game is criminally underrated....It rules the action game category, and would have deserved a nod for best song and best graphics as well. The particle effects are incredible.

Excellent choices, especially Baten Kaitos. However, there is one glaring omission. You left out Legacy Of Kain: Defiance. Please put it back. Now.

I take it that you have heard this amazing soundtrack? If so, did you buy the cd? Comes in a nice case with some cool artwork.

that's odd to hear V. Joe didn't rock your boats. Glad to see at least Crimson Skies was considered. A different change of pace from the usual running around and shooting fps action. Me, I'd place my bets on racing/cruising around in Midtown Madness 3 as the most fun I've had on Live! last year.

Trying not to be all passive aggressive here, but what were your thoughts on Ikaruga...along with V. Joe that game got massive amounts of love here and abroad in the gaming community.

Too broke to buy it right now. I'm in $15,000 worth of debt, so I had to get it by 'other' means. Regardless, it's a masterpiece.

Whoa, whoa, whoa? The Getaway? The game where leaning against a wall HEALS you?

But other than that, fantastic list. KOTOR deserves all the love.

Excellent list, well thought out.

I do echo the "Getaway is garbage" statements. I mean, I was hoping it would be good, but ended up using it to prop my door open. And it's winter now... so I can't even do that.

As soon as it freezes I guess I can scrape ice with it. Here's hoping it doesn't let me down again.

All critical aspects of Best Action Game, certainly.

Also, while I haven't played Max Payne 2, if the writing is anything like the original Max Payne, it surely required some practiced bravado on your part to even nominate it.

Though I agree with most of the rest of your choices, I noticed something concerning both your categories and my two major disagreements.. you seem to lean toward using cinematic criteria for judging games. You and I are very different. While cinematic direction and quality writing (crucial in RPGs) can certainly help a game, I think it should be judged as a game first: level design, balance, control, etc.

In a nutshell, Pac-Man Vs. is a better action game than The Getaway.
