Top Five LotR moments

Thread Starter
What are yours?

5) Theoden's Speech to the Eorlings(Return of the King)--"Death!" "Death!"

4)The Hobbits return to Hobbiton(ROTK)--and all they get is a glare.

3)Arwen sees her future (TTT)-- "but you my daughter"

2)Wormtounge speaks to Eowyn (TTT)--"Oh, but you are alone! Who knows what you have spoke to the darkness?"

1)Boromir's pledge (FOTR)- " I would have followed you to the end... my brother... my captain... my king !"

**sniff**

what the hell I am dorky enough to want to participate...

5) For some reason, Eowyn's lament for Theodred always gets to me.

4) (tie) Sam: "If I can't carry it, I'll carry you!" and (after Frodo's "I have to go alone") "That's right... and I'm coming with you!"

3) Gollum to Faramir: "My.... PRECIOUS... AHHHHHHHH!!!"
(All the conflict and humor of the character is in that moment without the split personality/talking to himself device.)

2) The Council of Elrond part from when Frodo sees the elves, dwarves and men engulfed in fire inside the ring, until Gandalf's look of sadness after Frodo says he will take it to Mordor. (though after that comes some of the worst moments of the trilogy.)

1) From "I am a servant of the secret fire..." until Frodo's look to Aragorn outside the mines. Actually as a whole the mines sequence is probably my favorite part of all three films.

honorable mention... when gandalf says the "when did saruman abandon reason for madness" thing... that sort of head cocked sadistic smile on chris lee's face is priceless.

I can't bring myself to rank these, so I'll just list my five favorite in no particular order...

Sam finding the lembas at the bottom of the cliff, realizing what Gollum had done, climbing back up in record time, finding the vial and the sword in the tunnel, and pulling out a can of hobbit-whupass on Shelob.

Gimli telling Legolas that he never thought he'd die fighting side-by-side with an Elf, and Legolas asking "What about side-by-side with a friend?"

The parting of Merry and Pippin after Pippin looked into the Palantir. Pippins complete loss of innocence and overwhelming regret for looking into the Palantir without permission.

Pippin singing to Denethor as the shot cut back and forth from Pippin, to the battlefield, to Denethor and back again. A well-crafted moment of pure madness.

Aragorn and Borimir's conversation as Borimir lay dying after defending the hobbits.

Honorable Mention: Gollum's personalities arguing in TTT. I get goose bumps all over whenever I hear the evil Gollum whisper "Muuuurderer..."

i go more for the fast action stuff.

1 - the divebombing Nazguls at Minis Tirith. (ROTK)

2 - The Ents attack Isengard (2T)
Specifically when they start piling in throwing rocks and things

3 - Eowyn VS. The Witch King and his fell beast (ROTK)

4 - Rohan VS. the Mumaks (ROTK)

5 - Legolas surfing on a shield while firing arrows (2T)

6 - the quick glimpse you see of Pippin's vision of the white tree dead and the city burning - i thought THAT was creepy and cool.

best lines (in no particular order)
Gimli - There is enough for the both of us, may the best dwarf win.
Gimli - That STILL just counts as one.
Gimli - He's moving because my axe is imbedded in his nervous system
Treebeard - We have finally decided..... You are not orcs.

Seeing Treebeard was the best part, because it was what i always envisioned. despite his scenes having some of the worst special effects i've seen in a movie.

the spider

Gollum/smeagle for the first time

when the eagles come

boromir's death
Here's five in no order

Boromir's death

Gimili talking to Eowyn on the way to Helm's Deep and telling her about female dwarves. Her laugh is perfect.

Galadrial's voice-over at the beginning of Fellowship

Gandalf and the Rohan charge down the hill to save Helm's Deep

The Nazgul hunt for Frodo and the Ring in Fellowship
post #7 of 20
I would have to say in no particular order:

- When the Fellowship is attacked by the orcs by the river, Aragorn tells Frodo to run and just before he starts to lay waste to some orcs he raises his sword to give a salute.

- Theoden's speeches before the charges in TTT and RotK. Goosebumps every time.

- "If by my life or death I can save you. I will"

- The ents emerging from the forset to attack Isengard.

- Faramir leading the charge at Osgiliath accompanied by Pippin singing.
Greedo shooting first. I love that shit.
These are just ones I personally like, for whatever reason, and in no particular order:

"The Ring is mine!"

Gandalf vs. the Balrog in the Express-Elevator-to-Hell stylee.

Frodo vs. the Nazgul at the end of TTT.

Faramir rides out.

The Ents trash Isengard.

There are probably more, but just these off the top of my head.
Hmm...

1. Aragorn describing the Argonath to Frodo. 'Long have I wished to look upon the kings of old... my kin.'

2. The entirety of Shelob.

3. Aragorn's defining moment standing before the Black Gate: 'For Frodo'.

4. The cheer moment when Gandalf and Eomer lead the Rohirrim towards Helm's Deep.

5. 'My friends, you bow to no one.'
Mmm... Shelob. The whole Shelob thing, from "Master must go *inside* the tunnel." to "Then he'll wish he'd never been born!" is just sheer gold.

Question: saw it again recently - what is that maggoty pink stuff around Shelob's head and on her back? It was *gross*.
Top ten I can think of. Yes, I'm breaking the rules. Five is too limited.

10. Sam, Merry and Pippin watch Frodo sail away at the end of Return of the King.

9. The explosion at Helm's Deep. Sure, it's a downer---but it's an amazing thing to behold.

8. Gandalf vs the Balrog...and...the scene outside of the mines. Weeping. Much weeping.

7. "For Frodo"

6. The death of Boromir.

5. Aaragorn and Theoden ride out in The Two Towers.

4. Gandalf tells Pippin about death and beyond as Minis Tirith is about to be invaded.

3. I really really really REALLY love the "lighting the torches" scene from Return of the King.

2. "My friends! You bow to No one."

1. Theoden's speech to the Rohirrm...and seeing all of those hourses about to charge...fucking gets me every time.
The entire fellowships reactions to Gandalf, and later Boromir's deaths. Especially Legolas's pained confusion and Merry and Pippin's desperate, anguished charge at the orcs after Boromir falls.

The shot of all the uruk-hai ladders going up with the big, unarmored fuckers riding the ends.

The Last March of the Ents.

Elrond describing Aragorn's death: "An image of the glory of the kings of men, undimmed before the breaking of the world."

The witch-king and the fell beast sitting on the ruins of Osgiliath, looking across the field at Minas Tirith.

"You are soldiers of Gondor. Whatever comes through this gate, you will stand your ground!"

The Rohirrim get seriously fucked up by the Mumakil.

The Black Gate opens. The very brief shot of Aragorn on his horse, sword held high, as the armies of Mordor march out, with the dark tower and the eye of Sauron visible in the background.

"I'm glad to be with you, Samwise Gamgee. Here at the end of all things."
5. Boromir's defense of Merry and Pippin and death
4. The Elves' Arrival (The Two Towers)
3. The Death of Gandalf
2. The fight in front of the Black Gate, particularly the very beginning
1. Faramir's Ride at Osgiliuth
I think that just Eowyn's slammin' body deserves a spot on the list too
post #16 of 20
another couple.

the "Where is the horse and the rider?" sequence.

Legolas firing his bow like a machine gun at the end of Fellowship.

Faramir and the soldiers' funeral procession out of Minas Tirith before they ride on Osgiliath.
You all have covered my most emotional tear-jerker moments - these are my favorite "oh SH**" moments:

5. Theoden's face when Aragon tells him how many are coming to Helm's Deep
4. Shelob stalking Frodo
3. Theoden seeing the elephants for the first time - yipe!
2. Gandalf's face right before the Balrog, "This foe is beyond any of you"
1. "They are coming"

and just for me - every shot of the stairs in ROTK - I hate heights as it is - I kept expecting Frodo, Sam, and Gollum to just fall and die and me with them into the screen. HATE heights
post #18 of 20
-When the stunt guy head butted Orlando in the bar "White light! White light!"
-When the Indian hobbit scale double berated Viggo's cooking "I would have made fish curry"
-When Brad Dourif forgot to shave his eyebrows "FUCK!"
-Any time Dom Monaghan does his impressions
-When Mortensen talked the entire Rohan unit into camping out just to get a shot of them running into the sunrise.
The calvary charge into the bad guys at Helm's Deep.

Shelob

Everything in the Mines but mostly "You shall not PASS!"

"Let's hunt some Orc."

The song as Faramir leads the suicidal charge.
5. Gandalf's speech to Frodo about 'pity'.

4. Aragorn confronted by the army of Uruk in Amon Hen

3. The Bridge of Khazad Dum

2. Gandalf and Pippen on the balcony in Minis Tirith

1. Gandalf releasing Theoden from Saruman's spell. My favorite scene from the trilogy.
