Xbox head Ed Fries quits...

This sucks. Fries was insanely passionate about gaming, and he spearheaded a lot of the initiatives that make the Xbox such a great gaming machine. While the head honchos for Sony seem nonexistant and Nintendo's brass seem hopelessly out of touch with reality, Fries always seemed dedicated to figuring out what gamers wanted to see and then finding a way to deliver those games and services. I know nobody probably cares about a news story like this, but I hope his replacement has the same passion for gaming.

That's some bad news for Xbox fans. That would include me. Who knows, though.

Ed Fries is partly responsible for Halo...so the world will morn his loss.

Fries Not Quite Gone...

If you check xbox.ign.com (Reliable? not really, but...), they quoted Robbie Bach as saying Fries was taking 30 to 90 days off. So he's not gone yet....

Actually, I thought I read that Microsoft would take 30-90 days to announce Fries' replacement.

In any case, if he does leave I really don't think it would be as dramatic a blow as some are making it out to be. As someone who has now spent the past 5+ years in various corporate environments in IT development I know all about turnover. And I've seen first-hand that when someone talented moves on there is almost always a protege or two who could step up and pick up where he/she left off. It's just up to management to identify and properly empower the right people.

Of course, if Fries went on to join PlayStation or something that WOULD be a big kick in the gut. I'm sure there are non-compete clauses that would prevent such a desertion, though. That's standard... even for guys in the trenches like myself.

If he leaves, I think he'll start his own development company and probably work with Microsoft and Xbox to produce games.

My bad...I noticed he was taking the time off to think about the direction he'd like to take AFTER he leaves.

Just as long as they don't fuck with Halo 2...my precious, indeed.

I'm not really mourning his loss. Just kind of worried that he'll be replaced by a corporate bean counter instead of an actual gamer who is passionate about the medium. And THAT would be bad news...

Ever heard of Ken Kutaragi?

Favorite quote from Ed Fries, read in a French magazine a few months before the Xbox release when asked about the Japanese market: "We're not afraid of Sony. Japanese people all have a PS2 but only use it to wedge their living room table." 2 years later, Xbox is still outsold by the PS1 in Japan. Sucker.

No.

Read more about video games then Kutaragi's the man behind PS1 and 2 and he's Sony's game spokesperson. Very present man, always first in line at every major video game event.

But is he hot?

I'd do him...if only to get my hands on a prototype PSP.

Those silly Japanese... to them, size (SMALL) matters when it comes to consoles.

I still love my PS2, but there is no question about it: Xbox kicks its' ass.

IMHO, PS2 only has a head-start and backward compatibility (ie, tons more games) going for it.

Introducing the Playstation 5...now already devouring your braincells thanks to Nanotechnology we unleashed several months ago...

Has anyone seen anybody mod their x-box's to look like a sherman tank? People do this stuff with pc's all the time...it would be cool to do that to an x-box. Be fitting.

I concur. Xbox is a pretty awesome console. I own all three and lately my Xbox gets more play than the other two EVER did. Blame Xbox Live.

My X-Box gets the majority of time between Gamecube and X Box but unfortunately X-Box has been missing most of the games I love, which ironically enough are all on Playstation 2 which I'm not gonna buy because I know X-Box is better.

What a conudrum.

Its too bad that Fries is leaving a heavy hitter like X-Box. He really did seem like he wanted the gamer to get the most out of things. Hell, he was the only head honcho I've ever taken the time to remember by name and face.

But, I think this is a good thing. The X-Box won't hurt becausethe dude has already shown Microsoft what works and they'll probably use the old 'if it ain't broke' adage, while Fries will go somewhere or start something where he has more freedom and/or creative control, which can only be good for us gamers.

Wasn't it also because it was easy to remember?

"Would you like Ed Fries with that?"
