Gordon and Yuzna

OK, not so much a face off, but more of a poll. In your opinion, what do you think has been the high point of both Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna's careers? Naturally, I'm guessing I'll be seeing a load of "Re-Animator" and "Society" popping up, but I'd appreciate knowing why you like 'em so much. For me, I have only seen Re-Animator, Dagon and Return of the Living Dead III so can't really comment much - though I have Beyond Re-Animator and From Beyond on their way to me.

I think DAGON is the hight point of Gordon's career so far. RE-ANIMATOR is good fun but ultimately not my kind of flick. I've only watched a heavily cut version, though, so I may change my opinion when I finally see the film the way it was intended ...

Yuzna is slightly more difficult. I really dig the DENTIST flicks. I liked SOCIETY and PROGENY. Didn't really care for anything else he's done. Hm, yeah, probably SOCIETY.

I think Dagon was plagued by bad secial effects, and not even in a good 'bad' way. The only time I generally applauded them was at the end when a certain something appears from a certain circular pit (I'm sure you know what I mean). It could've worked better if it focussed on atmosphere even more - even though there was tonnes of it. Still, I really bloody liked it.

A little love for Castle Freak, perhaps? The Creetch and I recently re-watched it and despite some of the so-so performances and the high drama, it's actually quite a fucked-up little film.

I'm not saying it's his best, Dagon wins that one for me, but it should not be ignored.

And neither should Return of the Living Dead III. Not everyone's favorite entry, but you gotta give him credit for trying something different (i.e. not remaking the first one again...). But as far as his best...Faust?

KIDDING!

Though you clearly did like Faust, mind. As for Castle Freak, is there any idea where I could order it from on DVD per chance? I like in the UK, and our Horror collection of DVD's is about as ace as our anime collection (though the UK is finally understanding that anime actually sells, now).

I gotta go with Dagon easily for Gordon and then Society for Yuzna....though Return of TLD III is a pretty cool flick.

As for Castle Freak...it's one of those movies I've always wanted to re-watch cause I think my absurdly high expectations for it (which were dashed) didn't allow me to really give it a chance and watch it for it's own merits.

You can get the OOP US DVD real cheap right here. I think they also included CASTLE FREAK as a sort of bonus on the Gordon-produced DEATHBED (not to be confused with the brilliant DEATH BED - THE BED THAT EATS).

Return of the Living Dead 3. Amazing movie. Horror movie with some depth.

Dagon was decent. Nothing special, but decent.

Not a Reanimator fan, or the sequels actually.

It's funny, I had the opposite reaction. I had heard so many bad things about Castle Freak, that when I finally saw it I was pleasantly surprised. That is a sick, grotesque movie that really wallows in perversity (in a good way). And I'm not just being doubly redundant.

Gordon's movies always push the boundaries of good taste in an anarchistic way. I love em.

Any love for Space Truckers?

Definitely. A totally bizarre movie, pretty quotable, with some pretty fun design work and George Wendt getting sucked out into space. It's no ROBOT JOX, but it's still good stuff.

Re-Animator is Gordon's best with Dagon a close second. Most of Yuzna's stuff is forgettable.

Yep, I tried not to like it, but the robo-cock is a winner.

You, my friend, did not feel the bitter sting of disappointment after racing to the theater (opening night!) to see it.

I'm with you on the Farmer Vincent. I was only stopped from walking out by the shear absurdity of such lines as "I'm gonna get in this thing....and kick your ass!"
