underworld....

I just rented this movie last night.....easily the best werewolf movie in a while.....(yes, i know their are vampires too....) Even though the movie was some kinda "blade" ripoff, it was still different in a way (well except for the fact that everyone uses guns the whole time), in fact I think the story could go much further, i'm really hype to see what they do next with it...by the way... is "dog soldiers" any good? i keep walking past it.........

But i did figure out what is bothering me in these films. Vampires and werewolves in my mind have always been very powerful creatures that should be very hard to kill.... In these movies ( blade, underworld, other ripoff movies) all the vampires/werewolves are WAY too easy to kill off..... I mean look at dracula (the original) He could just disappear altogether, turn into a shadow, hypnotize you, this was all magical/spiritual, and in a way the new vampires are just a bunch of tools who anyone could kill (so it seems) I don't know, i guess it just bothers me to think that the monsters have been cheapened from their original form and intent,,,,,,,,, ben3man

Dog Soldiers is a million times better than this Underworld POS check it out.

The fact that they used guns the whole time was the only thing I didn't like about Underworld. Other than that, I liked it muchly.

Oh god yes, Floyd, amen. And Ginger Snaps. And hell, just go rent the Howling or American Werewolf in London or Wolfman or Werewolf of London or fuck even Bad Moon....anything but Underworld. God, I hated that movie.

I mean, there were supposed to be vampires and werewolves in Underworld right? M5, you are so right, it's just a bunch of people in leather basking in blue gels shooting at each other.
Decent movie. Has is problems, and for me is more or less a snack till Van Helsing arrives. But I really like the werewolf transformation. One rare instance of CGI done right.
Even though Underword dragged a bit, I really liked the movie.

And the reason the vampires and werewolves died so easily was because the vampires were using silver bullets and the werewolves had aquired some type of bullet that had glowing liquid in them, essentially sunlight in a bullet.
best werewolf movie in awhile well i hope by awhile u mean 6 months Dog Soldiers and Ginger Snaps are a lot better then Underworld i know this was said above but i felt like i should stress the point

Punctuation is key.
When...in the first 15 minutes of the movie, one of the non-transformed werewolves shoots his uzi at a subway window and it took about 5-7 bullets before it shattered I knew I was not watching a E-ticket movie

Yep, UNDERWORLD was pure ass. Beginning with the ultra-expository voiceovers and carrying right on through to the stolen visuals, hackneyed plot contrivances and the virtual non-performances by everyone involved, I couldn't have been more disappointed by a "vampires vs. werewolves" flick.

When I discovered that the script was penned by a couple of ex-stuntmen, I wasn't really surprised, since they sacrificed any character development and coherent plot structure in favor of recycled action and pyrotechnics. Oh, and let's not mention the laughable self-importance on display. Do any of these people have a sense of humor?

And to add insult to injury, they left it wide open for a sequel.

Blecch.

Heed the advice given here and check out the plethora of other werewolf flicks that leave this POS in the dust with its tail between its legs. DOG SOLDIERS is a great start -- sure, it owes a little a bit to ALIENS, but there's so much more fun to be had than in UNDERWORLD.
Just thought I would add that I agree with every single one of the movies mentioned above being better than Underworld with the exception of Bad Moon. I just fucking hate that movie.
I really disagree that Underworld is a rip off of Blade, but whatever..to each his own.

There will always be a movie out that will remind you of something. I'm not saying, every movie...but at some point, some movie will remind you of the other.

Underworld is exactly like this, vampire series I read. But that doesn't mean they read the damn series, it just means that shit happens and sometimes, people have the same general ideas in mind. I don't think anyone was like, oh yea Blade's such a cool movie, let's make our movie like that. No one would do that, they wanna be original, so what would be the purpose of making a movie similiar to another one on purpose.

Underworld is one of my favorite movies. For me, reading the book first helped me a lot because there is a ton they left out in the actual movie. A lot of parts about Michael's past and just a little things here and there that could have made the attraction between Selene and Michael seem a little more, there..obvious. Underworld has a lot of potential to have another movie because there is a lot, that wasn't answered...not only in the movie but the book as well.

Spoken like someone who's never worked in or around Hollywood (no offense). Originality is dead. Everyone's looking for the next working formula, because that formula equals CASH.

Why do you think we saw so many bullet-time ripoffs after The Matrix?

Why have quite a few more fantasy epics been recently greenlit?

The almighty dollar, my friend.

Blade and its sequel made healthy profits, and it was only a matter of time before other films tried to emulate its successful formula.

I still want to sex Kate Beckinsale up though
post #15 of 42
I have to agree with everyone who says Underworld is a piece of shit. Dog Soldiers is amazing, it has great characters in it, where as underworld not only had characters that were awful but it was directed and edited by a retard. the most mundane things take 5 hours, the cool stuff...scratch that, the stuff stolen from other movies is on screen for no time at all, way to hide that you stole a lot, show it real quick, in fact i'm pretty sure i saw a few scenes from balde in there...yeah stepehn dorff was in that one scene!!!

A beautiful ass...

Amen. The only redeemable thing about this movie was Kate Beckinsale's amazing ass. In fact, the whole leather ensemble was truly a work of art. I demand a wax model be put together immediately and sent on a world tour.

As for the movie, what a fucking mess. Illogical mythology, so-so special effects, and a complete lack of tension, really don't help this movie at all.

That said, Budapest looks nice. I hope more movie-makers make use of this Eastern European city.
but did they ever say where they were?

I thought they were going for the whole N.Y./1800's London type feel

I will say that the last jump scene was pretty

you know....the ending money shot
I thought the werewolf effects were some of the best I've seen for a long time i.e little to no CGI.
The actors are really what let this movie down, but it was a fun popcorn flick nonetheless. The big finale?? Apparently a cross between a werewolf and a vampire looks like a................................................. ..smurf!!

actually now that i think about it, the movie was shit....but, I enjoyed watching it so i guess it couldn't have been that bad...... What can i say? Some bad movies i like? There are plenty of awful fucking movies out there that I like....for some reason....And now that i think about it, the combo looking like a smurf was fucking stupid........ I guess what i should have said in the beginning was I like the IDEA of the movie, but it definitely had some flaws.....And i really thought the werewolf transformations were really well done.....Another thing i hate about this and the blade movies...is all the vampires have tans...wtf!!! They have never seen the sun since becoming a vampire. Well, I guess the black guy vampires have an excuse, but still! They should all be pastey white........
God, I hated this movie.

It astounds me that characters were firing off guns left and right, spending clips and clips of ammunition, and did not hit a thing!

These creatures need to spend more time at a rifle range.

Also, the "shoot enough bullets and maybe we'll hit something" mentality of the movie wore a bit thin.

After seeing characters firing both guns, Chow Yun Fat style and only hitting one bad guy really got on my nerves.

It stopped being cool when they were missing all the time.
Why were the vampires and werewolves fighting over the lead singer from Creed?
Because he's hot hot HOT!!!

Doesn't this happen in just about every action movie ever made that incorporates large gunfights? Movie would be over pretty fuckin' quick if everyone had perfect aim.

Not a great movie, but I thought it was a fun rental.
SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF has to be pretty darn high for most to even step into a vampire and werewolf movie, but yet you guys are complaining about this stuff in this movie?

In your opinion, was the war between vampires and werewolfs as realistic as it should be?
Yah, I gotta admit -- Chuck Jones did that sort of thing WAY better.
I thought Underworld was watchable, the story had a lot of potential that was completely wasted. I was incredibly disappointed in the "crossed" Vampire/Werewolf. He just looked like a guy in blue or black paint to me. Dog Soldiers and Ginger Snaps are really cool werewolf movies, definitely should check those out if you haven't seen them. My favorite though is American Werewolf in London (Paris sucked!), it's just a classic. The Howling is good too, but I liked it better as a kid.

The firearms, while cool, have been done to death. Full auto handguns were cool in "Face/Off", but are now old hat. Sillywood needs to get some new iron. Besides, if you're a super-strong vampire why not just pack a big fifty around?

I'm giving twenty Cosmo points to any film featuring these underused firearms:

FN-49/SAFN
Thompson Center Contender
K-31 Carbine
Ruger SRH in .454 Casull--far meaner than a Desert Eagle
The REAL ma deuce (see Black Hawk Down)

Hell, I'll settle for the actual sounds instead of silly "ptchuu ptchuu" sound effects.

If you're a big strong vampire why carry a gun at all?

At least is showed they actually did do something other than sit around the castle and drink wine, or blood, whatever. Stupid movie.
I thought it was a fun movie.

Kate's twin machine pistols kicked ass and I thought Michael Sheen as Lucien was great.

The creature effects were above average with the Lycans being the best I've seen in a long time.

I just saw this and I really enjoyed it. But first however I watched Freddy Vs Jason and all I can say is that Underworld was a fucking masterpiece after seeing that.

Personally I loved the movie and my ass will be in the seat watching the rest of the trilogy.

What's funny to me is people will pick Underworld apart for being too much like the Matrix, or not being a true vampire movie or being too much of a love story.

Well shit, I could pick out every plot, theme, or kung fu move Quentin Tarantino stole and people would still love him the same.

*shrugs* Just another reason I'll never understand humans. *robot cry*

In this movie, because not using a gun tends to get the vampires killed.

Unless you're really old.
I don't think Underworld ripped off Blade or The Matrix. It was better than Blade I think all of the backlash from the style over substance complaints from the Matrix sequels helped for a lot of peoples opinions. I mean the Vampires didn't do a lot of biting because, well who are they gonna bite in this movie? A werewolf? I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie and I am really looking forward to the next one.

I liked the back story, the rest not so much.

I was waiting for the werewolves to fall over for being so damn top heavy and damnit, I wanted some kill shots from lycans, instead of an open mouth coming at the camera - that was weak.

I mean did those helmet heads even have periphal(sp?) vision? If not, with no neck and all...they must have been easy to sneak upon.

Now, Ill go see the prequel, no leather, no guns - just claws and swords, booyah!

I liked the sexah kate in leather, dont get me wrong, but personally, im just tired of that cliche. Vamps = leather, gothic dress, etc etc.

But thats just me and me only.

Glad to see Im not alone.

I liked Underworld, or at least the experience of seeing it. The movie, objectively, is not great. I especialy disliked, as did everyone else, the horrible aim, the I-cut-you-but-you-dont-know-it shit at the end, and the most grating of all: the fact that Amelia, which was supposedly as old as Viktor, got all frightened and girly when the lycans came for her, instead of kicking their ass like Viktor did. I guess 2 strong females in one movie was a bit too much for "normal" audiences to handle, eh?

Also, the look of the supersmurf didn't bother me; the fact that he was fucking useless in the fight bothered me. THIS is the superbeing everyone was trying to create? Gimme that OTHER disappointment Deacon Frost any day.
